The main objective of this paper is to propose the optimal design method of welded plate girder bridges using genetic algorithm. The objective function considered is the total weight of the welded plate girder. The behavior and design constraints are formulated based on the Korean Railroad Bridge Design Code and DIC Code. Continuous design variables are used to define the cross-sectional dimensions of the member. The GAs (genetic algorithm) is used to solve the nonlinear programming problem. Several examples of minimum weight design are solved to illustrate the applicability of the proposed minimization algorithm. From the results of application examples, the optimum design of welded plate girder is successfully accomplished. Therefore, the proposed algorithm in this paper may be used efficiently and generally for the optimum design of welded plate girders.
Natural frequencies are studied for dynamic analysis of plate girder bridges which are made up about 34% in the existing railway bridges in Korea. In this study, standard plate girder bridges designed by L-22, a standard load type of the railway specification in Korea, are modeled for finite element method analysis. SAP2000n, a commercial finite element method analysis tool, is used for structural analyses and evaluations. Span lengths of Plate girders have 7 types : 6m, 9m, 12m, 15m, 22m, 24m, and 30m. Natural frequencies are considered in mass rations and span lengths and they are compared with a recommendation of UIC 776-1R for alterations, from now on, in train conditions of operation. For changes of natural frequencies in plate girders by damages of structures, Parameter studies are accomplished.
To the installed CWR (Continuously Welded Rail) on steel plate girder bridges without ballast, shoes were replaced by the shoe for reduced axial force. During 9 months, from summer to winter, expansion by a temperature on girders, axial forces by a temperature on CWR, etc. are tested and the results are evaluated. Also, with the numerical analysis, the results - axial forces by a temperature on CWR, deformations of girders, etc. are compared and evaluated. From the longitudinal displacement on girders, occurred by run of trains, because of looking for the stability, the bearings for reducing axial forces are applied to the railway bridges. It is verified that the bearings for reducing axial forces disperse the axial forces by a temperature from the measurement of the forces on CWR of plate girder bridges,.
Static behaviors of railway plate girder bridges designed by the L-22, a standard load type of the railway specification in Korea, are evaluated by widely eight load cases. The load cases are three real loads, which contain three locomotive types of Saemaul PMC, diesel, and Korea Train Express(KTX), and three design loads, L-22, L-18, and HL-25 loads, in railway specification. Plate girders for analysis have the length of spans of six types:6m, 9m, 12m, 22m, 24m, and 30m. For analysis SAP2000n ,a commercial FEM tool, is used. Dominant axial load types are taken from these results that are maximum deflections, reaction forces, and absolute maximum bending moment in girders.
In the design of plate girder web panels, it is required to evaluate accurately the elastic buckling strength under pure shear, pure bending and combined bending and shear. Currently, elastic buckling coefficients of web panels stiffened by transverse intermediate stiffeners are determined by assuming conservatively that web panels are simply supported at the juncture between the flange and web. However, depending upon the geometry and the properties of the plate girder bridge, upper juncture between the flange and web can be assumed as fixed because concrete deck prevents the rotational displacement of upper flange. In the present study, a series of numerical analyses based on finite element modeling is carried out to investigate the effects of the concrete deck, and the resulting data are quantified in simple equations.
The challenging aspect of CWR (continuous welded rail) is the additional axial forces in rails, mainly due to the thermal expansion of steel plate girder and rail itself. It has been found that these axial forces are proportional to girder length, total bridge length and bolt tightening forces. Also these forces are dependent to girder support conditions, types of bearings and their arrangements. With CWR, the authors' previous studies show that performance improvements like noise reduce, fatigue resistances and bearing durability increment can be expected. In addition to these effects, secondary effects due to the semi integral behavior between rail and bridge girder also can be expected. Special bearings which can reduce the absolute maximum axial forces have been developed, and applied to real 100m span bridge. The performance improvements were verified through site measurements and numerical analysis. The purpose of this study is to confirm the expected performance improvement aspects of steel plate girder bridges with CWR. To verify these aspects, girder stiffness changes, rail axial force changes, girder displacements and noise level were thoroughly measured and compared.
Form the application of long rail system the non-ballast steel plate bridges, fatigue strength increase and rail noise reduction can be expected. This is mainly form the reduction of the rail impact at the rail joint locations which already made to behave together from welds. In the high speed rail, application of long rail system is essential because without long rail system, the required serviceability level can not be achieved. But even with this long rail systems, the thermal expansion from the girder can not be absorbed in the normal bearing systems, and these expansion cause between girder and rail. Also unexpected rail buckling and fracture through rail thermal tension may happen. It was found through numerical analysis and field measurement that these problems can be avoided by semi-fixed bearing system. In this study, the benefits of non-ballast plate bridge through long rail system, especially at the point of girder stability, girder stiffness increase and bearing maintenance will be reviewed.
A dynamic characteristics of existing steel plate girder railway bridges without ballast were investigated from the finite element analysis. Span lengths, types of vehicle and running speeds are selected as parameters for analyses. For more exact analysis, it was adopted that 3-dimensional bridge models and wheel loads were produced by averaging field measured wheel loads of running vehicles at various speeds. Dynamic vertical deflections, dynamic amplification factors and vertical accelerations of bridges having 9m, 12m and 18m span length were investigated and compared with the limit values specified in Korean railway bridge specification.
The open deck steel bridge is the most common type in railway bridges. Steel I-shaped girders are connected with sleepers directly without ballast and moving train loads are transmitted directly to the girder, so this bridge has weak characteristics on impact. Therefore, considerable accelerations can cause unsatisfactory dynamic behavior of the open deck steel bridge. Especially, Impact created at rail joints can increase the dynamic response of the bridge and this phenomenon would be injurious to passenger comfort. In the present study, dynamic behavior of the open deck steel bridge which has a rail joint is estimated through experimental studies and bridge-train interaction analysis considering surface irregularities by rail joints.
KTX is going to directly operate on the existing plate girder bridges before the complete construction of new high-speed line. Also the speed and traffic volume is increased after electrification of conventional line. Then, it is necessary to check the dynamic behaviors of these bridges. Therefore, this paper reviews the dynamic behaviors of welded plate girder bridges designed by L-22, a standard load type of KNR. The span lengths of plate girder analyzed here are 6.6m, 9.7m, 12.9m, 16.0m, 19.2m, 22.3m, 25.4m and 31.1m. Using 2-D dynamic analysis, vertical deflection ratios of plate girder and maximum accelerations of car body are calculated. And the analytical results are compared with those of design criteria.
