  • The market taxonomy approach may lead to the most effective strategy to promote the export of Korean Railway Systems. By prioritizing opportunities in the global marketplace and subsequently identifying market segments, this approach will reveal the most effective market strategies for Korean rail exporters. This study suggests the market potential index. In addition, it also introduces how market segmentation should be done for the global rail supply market. Applying the market taxonomy to derive strategic implications, this study portrays several export projects currently being undertaken by the Korean rail industry.

  • This paper examines the situation and tasks of competitive systems of EU transport market focusing on railways. Recently, the EU transport market has changed radically, thanks to an increasingly competitive rail market. The European Commission has stimulated the creation of a competitive environment that will enhance the position of rail. Some scholars have insisted that the rail market is more monopolistic than competitive. However, the case of UK rail privatization suggests this is not the case. Moreover, some countries have a rail market that is more competitive. We draw on a wide range of sources including statistics and analyses of recent phenomena. These demonstrate the emergence of competitive markets in EU rail and the difficulty of developing a competitive market. With regard to the adoption of the competitive market, we examine three things. First, we observe recent cases and trends in competitive markets. Second, we compare the result of competitive markets and non-competitive markets within EU nations. Third, we demonstrate factors of formation of competitive markets and the possible expansion. We identified differences within open market policies amongst EU nations. Although a competitive EU rail market may have some difficulties, it will steadily begin to overcome technological differences and a lack of funds, because EU countries have a common goal, which is to develop the railways, solving, wherever possible both environmental and energy problems. Through this analysis, we found that the free market in EU rail will be extended to deliver efficiency and quality service.

  • The Korean High Speed Electric Multiple Unit (HEMU) train system is soon being applicable to practical use. This new technology is expected not only to reshape the domestic market but also to be exported to overseas markets for high-speed train system. This study aims to prospect demands on the HEMU train technology and to formulate marketing strategies using a text-mining technique, therefore, providing a foundation for successful commercialization of the HEMU train system.

  • This research suggests feasible means for domestic railway industries to actively enter overseas railway markets by thoroughly analyzed the business trends of the expanding international railway markets and their characteristics. The 983 independent cases of international railway orders introduced in domestic markets during the past five years were analysed. In order to enhance the efficiency and consistency of the series of analysis, one classification system was established, and proportions of each category were assessed after the analysis of each piece of business information in the classification. It can be concluded from the analysis that early entrance into new projects with system design similar to that used in Korea will enrich the chances for domestic industries to enter the expanding international railway market, because Korean business is likely face competition from other companies for low-price contracts if the entering timing to the market is too late.

The Effects of Environmental Adaptation Patterns in the Railway Public Enterprises on Marketing Capabilities and Organizational Performance: Focused on the Market Orientation of Korail and Subway Firms (철도공기업의 환경적응패턴이 마케팅역량과 조직성과에 미치는 영향: 코레일과 지하철 조직의 시장지향성을 중심으로)

  • The main purpose of this study is to depict the causal relationship among Market Orientation(MO), Marketing Capabilities(MC), and Organizational Performance(OP) with the moderating effect of Environmental Turbulence(ET), especially comparatively highlighting the differences between Korail and Subway firms. Findings show that there partly existed significant interactions effects between ET and MO in case of subway firms, whereas Korail did not reveal any significant results. When considering the strong relationship between MO and MC shown in the subway firms' case, it can be inferred that subway firms continuously have attempted to adapt to the external environment facing them more flexibly and actively over their counterpart, by which the degree of their MC became positively enhanced over Korail. These results give us some implication that MO should be internalized and also MC should get a higher consideration than ever throughout the railway public enterprises in order to strengthen their performance.

  • Development of a train wireless signal control system using LTE-R technology is expected to have a great ripple effect to the existing signal control market. To make inroads into the international market, it is an urgent issue to practicalize the train wireless signal control system. Because it will require a huge budget to commercialize the wireless signal control system, it is necessary to analyze the feasibility beforehand, with a consideration of the domestic and foreign marketability and the impact on related industries. This study investigated the effect of the practicalization of train control system on future railway and national industrial sectors. We suggested the establishment of a framework for economic feasibility analysis, one that can provide criteria for opportunistic valuation. We also verified this framework through case analysis.
