  • This paper deals with a control method for a hybrid energy storage system (ESS) with a battery and super capacitor for grid-connected operation. To improve the grid regulation and to minimize the depth of discharge of the battery, control algorithms for the hybrid ESS are proposed. A p-q control with predictive current control is used for the inverters for the super-capacitor and the battery. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method, simulation studies using the PSIM and RTDS are carried out for the actual grid model.

  • The aim of this study is to develop a technique for the accelerated life test of the capacitor in a propulsion control device of a traction inverter used for a high-speed train. Using this technique, the accelerated life test can possibly estimate the life cycle of a capacitor under various temperature conditions and irregularly applied voltage. The accelerated life test is conducted for the capacitor of the traction inverter. The common proceedings of this test are selection of failure mechanism, determination of accelerated stress, range determination of the accelerated stress, determination of the test condition, and distribution and determination of the sample. From this result, the continuous applied voltage was not considered for the acceleration factors anymore. Therefore, the final result having an acceleration factor of 9.4 (= 13,626/1,445) was observed. Furthermore, the life-shortening acceleration effect for the irregular applied voltage condition can be applied to various situations.

  • When a ballast track of a high-speed train is constructed on a bridge, the displacement of the bridge decks can occur because they are not fixed to the rails. Moreover, relative displacements occur between the bridge and rails caused by temperature changes and external loads. The current longitudinal resistance criteria (UIC Code 774-3, KR C-08080) on ballast tracks with continuous welded rails (CWRs) do not take into account the longitudinal movement of the bridge and the frictional force between the ballast and slabs. In addition, the magnitude of the longitudinal resistance, k, is calculated somewhat conservatively and, (therefore?) it acts as an unfavorable element in the design of long span and continuous railway bridges. Thus, in order to replicate the actual behavior more effectively, the longitudinal resistance of CWRs should take into account the additional rigidity between the slab and track. In this study, the longitudinal resistances of the ballasted track on the bridge were analyzed by carrying out an experimental study with a test setup designed to simulate the deck and bed track. In the test results, the maximum longitudinal resistances of the tests were similar to the resistances of the current codes, however, the measured longitudinal stiffness designed to limit the displacement of the tests were much smaller in comparison with the longitudinal stiffness on the codes.

  • To evaluate the vertical loads on railway bridges, conventional load tests are typically conducted. However, these tests often entail significant costs and procedural challenges. Railway conditions involve nearly identical load profiles due to standardized rail systems, which may appear straightforward in terms of load conditions. Nevertheless, this study aims to validate load tests conducted under operational train conditions by comparing the results with those obtained from conventional load tests. Additionally, static and dynamic structural behaviors are extracted from the measurement data for evaluation. To ensure the reliability of load testing, this research demonstrates feasibility through comparisons of existing measurement data with sensor attachment locations, train speeds, responses between different rail lines, tendency analysis, selection of impact coefficients, and analysis of natural frequencies. This study applies to the Dongho Railway Bridge and verifies the applicability of the proposed method. Ten operational trains and 44 sensors were deployed on the bridge to measure deformations and deflections during load test intervals, which were then compared with theoretical values. The analysis results indicate good symmetry and overlap of loads, as well as a favorable comparison between static and dynamic load test results. The maximum measured impact coefficient (0.092) was found to be lower than the theoretical impact coefficient (0.327), and the impact influence from live loads was deemed acceptable. The measured natural frequencies approximated the theoretical values, with an average of 2.393Hz compared to the calculated value of 2.415Hz. Based on these results, this paper demonstrates that for evaluating vertical loads, it is possible to measure deformations and deflections of truss railway bridges through load tests under operational train conditions without traffic control, enabling the calculation of response factors for stress adjustments.

  • The new developed train(HEMU-430X) faces running at high speed over 400km/h. But The Korea railway design code gives guidelines below 350km/h speed. Honam HighSpeed Railway was also designed based on the design standard below 350km/h. Existing infra structures have to be reviewed at high speed running and the design guideline for the speed over 350km/h should be prepared as soon as possible. This paper presents (1) the simulation results of composite steel girder bridge(Kaya Bridge of Seoul-Pusan HighSpeed Railway), (2) values measured at this bridge and the comparison with simulation results, and (3) the prediction of Yonjung bridge being constructed in Honam HighSpeed Railway.

  • Box culvert has long since been used for various purposes , water and sewerage works, communication and electricity facilities, subway, railway, etc. In urban area, the construetion of box culvert generally consists of excavation-installation of the culvert-backfill. However, the existing design methods for earth pressure on the box culvert do not take into account the excavation(or backfill) geometry. ' A new method considering excavation geometry for earth pressure on box culvert is suggested here. The lateral earth pressures by the newly suggested method agree relatively with results of finite element analyses, but those of existing method are greatly overestimated. The vertical pressure on the top of the box culvert by the new method is similar to those of existing method and finite element analysis. However, the reactional pressure on the bottom of the box culvert depends largely upon the stiffness of the foundation soil. The reactional pressure by the new method agrees well with that of finite element analysis, only when the stiffness is low. From the finite element analysis it is shown that the lateral earth pressure on box culvert depends upon the excavated slope (G) and the net bottom distance (Bc).

  • In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a 12m plate girder railway bridge is analyzed using the commercial FEM program. A time history load is applied to a standard train load via the shape function ofthe beam element. In addition, lateral behavior characteristics were simulated using the Klingel sine movement. A feasibility study of the FEM program and an analysis were performed by comparing the displacement and the acceleration, from the experimental data and the results of the FEM analysis. the time history of the lateral and vertical displacements are reflected in the experimental results. Six kinds of reinforcements were studied from the effects of the displacement and the acceleration. The RF-1 model that was applied to the upper lateral bracing system, and the RF-3 model that reinforced the plate, turned out to be the most effective reinforcement methods with respect to weight limits and construction simplification.

  • Maglev is a system that a train runs levitated above a rail. Therefore it is very important to maintain a constant levitation gap for achieving serviceability and ride comfort. This study is a cooperation research subject of the 3-1 subject, performance improvement of maglev track structures, of the Center for Urban Maglev Program in Korea, started in 2006. The aim of this study is development of rapid constructions of bridge superstructure for maglev. At present, precast deck is widely used because of its superiority to cast-in-place concrete on quality and the term of works. The research group suggested basic systems of maglev guideway with PSC-U type and trapezoidal open steel box type girder, and precast deck, cooperating with Korea Railroad Research Institute, the managing institute of the 3-1 subject. In this study, full-scale structure was fabricated for structural safety evaluation of precast decks and rail, and a static performance test of those structures was performed.

  • As a section insulator dividing the electric railroad catenaries with different phases, the AC/DC section insulator which divides AC and DC railroad catenary have the complex structure, and suffer irregular abrasion on the surface or insulator rods when it is installed at the underground railroad. This paper intended as an investigation of the irregular abrasion of section insulators, provides the field measurements of abrasion level along insulator length and the abrasion patterns. The height variation of insulator parts and the balding length of insulators against pantograph's contact force are analysed experimentally, and the irregular abrasion mechanism is clarified with the help of theoretical analysis on the interaction between pantographs and section insulators. On the basis of experimental and theoretical analysis, the countermeasures to reduce the irregular abrasion are provided too.
