  • The CEM (Crash Energy Management) concept is getting important in rail vehicle design to minimize Injury on passengers and drivers on crash event. In this paper, the accuracy of the FEA analysis result was verified through the crush test on the front part of a non-CEM based carbody. Using the verified FEA analysis method, the energy absorbing capability of the CEM based carbody was estimated.

  • According to the result of recent studies, it was revealed that the error of safety-related personnel still plays a significant role in the accidents and/or incidents of a railway system. Accordingly, in order to reduce as well as prevent human errors, it is necessary to: (1) identify the root cause of accidents/incidents, and (2) conduct a research that can provide a systematic as well as an effective way to deal with the identified human errors. To this end, it is essential to suggest appropriate countermeasures based on the result of a task load analysis, which can soundly reduce a high level of the task load put on safety-related personnel. In the light of this concern, about the tasks of railway traffic signallers, a detailed task analysis was conducted in this study. After that, the associated task load scores were quantified by NASA-TLX technique that is one of the most well-known subjective workload measurement techniques. As a result, a set of significant tasks that could put a high task load on railway traffic signallers was identified.

Study on the Vibration Reduction Characteristics of Floating Floors Used in Railway Vehicles (철도차량에서 사용하는 부유상구조의 진동절연특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper vibration reduction characteristics of floating floors used in railway vehicles are studied. Vibration reduction characteristics are compared through a series of tests for elastically-coupled floor and rigidly-coupled floor. It was found that elastically-coupled floor has larger vibration reduction amount than rigidly-coupled floor. Around the fundamental natural frequency, however, elastic floor has poor vibration reduction effect than rigid floor. Measures to reduce structure-borne noise are also discussed based on the test results. Structure-borne noise for running railway vehicles cannot be reduced by an effort to deviate resonance between natural frequency of floors and major exciting forces. Instead, reducing vibration level of top floor and using covers which have low sound radiation coefficient will be effective for reducing structure-borne noise.

  • The abnormally high temperature of the train part is related to train accidents and monitoring is important for safe operation of trains. In case of KTX an abnormality detecting device that detects the abnormality of the axle and scans the urban railway is installed on the railroad and when there is an abnormal heat generation, a system for automatically informing the control center is installed. The IR sensors module used in this system are depend on quick response. we have conducted a study on the fast response test method through the production of experimental equipments.

  • This study examined the effect of railway traffic controllers' negative perception of organizational culture on their job demand and job satisfaction in relation to the moderating effect of self-efficacy. Results showed that the aggressive/defensive culture based on power and competition, had a positive (+) effect on job demand and job satisfaction. On the other hand, in the conditional process model in which self-efficacy affects the relationship between organizational culture, job demand, and job satisfaction, self-efficacy played a significant role in lowering the level of job demand, and it contributed to the increase of job satisfaction through a mediating effect. This results suggest the needs for lowering the level of job demand by changing the present aggressive/defensive organizational culture into the constructive one. And also, much consideration for maintaining the level of their self-efficacy should be spent.

  • The current railway wireless network uses various communication scheme depending on the section of railway. Therefore, in the train, it is required a specific communication device for the corresponding communication scheme to communicate and exchange data with the control center. To enhance data rate and support various services, LTE-R scheme has been developed for the next generation railway communications. To use both the existing communication and LTE-R schemes, it is required an integration method for encompassing all communication schemes. In this paper, we overview existing railway communications and LTE-R scheme. Then, we develop a network integration method which can be applied by using one terminal in the train. In addition, implementation issues for the integration are also considered.

  • The control center of an urban railway operator provides railway users with various information on railway use through a 1:N same-time broadcasting system. However, the facilities of the broadcasting system are aging, exposing many limitations in meeting the needs of urban railway users who have become familiar with mobile services. To overcome these challenges, this study analyzed the mobile-based same-time broadcasting services using location information of urban railway users and the requirements of various stakeholders (urban railway users, an operator, and external service providers, etc.) to suggest optimal service models and physical structures. Through this study, it aims to secure safer operations of urban railway as well as to improve better disaster responses through rapid and efficient spread of the situation in case of disaster.

  • Bogie frame is typical safety part of railway vehicle. Total serviceable life of bogie frame will be evaluated by Cumulative Damage Approach Method that is defined by dynamic strain measurement during revenue service under the actual track conditions. As a result of the standardization process developed in British Standard Institution, BS 7608 defines for fatigue design and test method of steel structure by fatigue test results over the long period. This paper evaluates the total serviceable life applying BS 7608 for the bogie frame of Electric Multiple Unit to verify structural safety of the bogie frame.

  • The purpose of this paper is to validate energy absorbing capacity that satisfies APTA SS-C&S-034-99, REV.2 with North America type Electric Multiple Units. The FE models for collision and corner post simulation were developed. Two type of simulation were conducted. One is quasi-static analysis for collision post and the other is quasi-static analysis for corner post. And the energy absorption capacity of the analytical model was verified.

  • Hyundai Rotem Company has designed and manufactured the next generation high speed EMU bodyshell (M3-car). Korean Railway Safety Law specifies the loads vehicle bodies shall be capable of withstanding, identifies what material data shall be used and presents the principles to be used for design verification by analysis. Therefore, in order to fulfill the structural requirements, Hyundai Rotem Company has carried out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and static load test to verify whether the carbody structure has enough strength to withstand the loads specified by Korean Railway Safety Law. This research contains the results obtained by the FE analysis and static load test. The FE analysis is carried out using NX I-DEAS 6.1 and specially designed test jigs and equipment are used for the load tests.
