  • In this study, change of hydration property with contents and type of gypsum in ternary natural hydraulic lime containing blast furnace slag and gypsum was investigated. Anhydrite, hemihydrate and dihydrate were added 3 % and 10 %, respectively in natural hydraulic lime adding blast furnace slag 20 %. Hydration and physical behavior due to solubility and reactivity of different types of gypsum were analyzed in early hydration. As a result of analysis of hydration properties, in all samples, hydrates such as ettringite and C-S-H were produced in early hydration, and amount of hydrates with increase of hydration time was increased. In the case of compressive strength, when contents of gypsum are 3 %, it was higher compressive strength than other specimens. At hydration 28 days, for addition of anhydrite and hemihydrate, compressive strength was more than adding dihydrate.

  • In this study, the strength properties of NHL based mortar with blending basalt fiber were investigated. In the first step, it was evaluated that physical properties of NHL based mortar according to mixing method of four types of basalt fiber and then mixing method of one type was selected. As a result of assessment, it showed that the physical properties with mixing method of dry blending were better than that of wet blending and mixing method that basalt fiber pre-mixed with NHL for 5 min in a blender was selected and water and aggregate were finally added. Secondly, the investigation of blending fiber length on the compressive and flexural strength for basalt fiber reinforced NHL based mortars was carried out. The compressive strength was decreased with adding fiber, and the flexural strength was increased more than plain mortar. In the case of adding 6 mm fiber, the compressive and flexural strength were improved more than that of others.

  • In the present study, the multiple light scattering method was used for analysis of early hardening behavior of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) containing inorganic additives. In order to improve the properties of self-manufactured NHL, blast furnace slag and three types of gypsum were mixed with mixing ratio, and a water/solid ratio of fresh NHL paste was fixed 0.6. The fresh pastes in flat-bottomed cylindrical glass tubes were placed in the instrument. The backscattering flux (BS) of light from fresh pastes was then periodically measured at 10 minutes intervals the entire length of the sample (55mm) at $23^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The rate of increase of BS, slope of a linear equation to the mean value of BS (%) as a function of hydration time, was increased from 0.02 to 0.38 BS %/hour due to addition of blast furnace slag and gypsum. In the case of addition of hemi-hydrate, BS (%) and rate of increase in BS were highest.

  • An experimental study was conducted to test the applicability of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as a reinforcing agent for the supporting layers of mural paintings in ancient tombs.Drawing upon preceding studies on mural paintings inancient tombs, samples of reinforcing agents for various conditions were prepared using NHL products, and pseudo-samples of the supporting layers of mural paintings were also produced. The samples were cured for 7, 28, and 84 days in a high-humidity condition similar to that of the mural-tomb environment. Physical properties such as dimensional stability and compressive strength were measured for each curing period. The results indicated that the NHL samples had a rapid curing speed and a low contraction ratio and are therefore suitable as reinforcing agents, whereas they showed a poor match in terms of strength compared to the supporting layer, and also low whiteness. The dimensional stability and compressive strength testsrevealedthat an NHL product mixed with a pseudo-sample of a supporting layer provided desirable conditions for reinforcing agent. The findings suggested that different conditions for curing time and strength should be considered for each supporting layer prior to applying NHL as a reinforcing agent for damaged mural paintings in ancient tombs.

  • This study was to investigate the firing method of limestone in Joseon Dynasty, and analyze the physical chemical properties of lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty. This study was to manufacture and evaluate the firing experiment and mortar of Limestone by each sort in order to reproduce the traditional lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty, and investigate the behavior to improve physical properties according to the firing method of Limestone. This study has found out that there were screening criteria and standard of appropriate firing temperature about the Limestone in Joseon Dynasty. Accordingly, this study was to improve its strength through various additives and mixture. In particular, in case of Limestone, the black and blue Limestone were preferred, and most of domestic Limestones were low grade Limestone including the clay and took ivory white or blue with low whiteness. This study has shown that the low grade Limestone was mined by the surface mining compared with the high grade Limestone as underground mining method, and could be used because it was easy to mine relatively and there was possibility that Natural Hydraulic Lime(NHL) was used with the traditional lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty.
