  • This study was conducted to improve the productivety of Ligusticum chuanxiong HORT. and Cnidium officinale MAKINO by establishing the effects of cultivating conditions. Growth characteristics of underground part of L. chuanxiong under the different mulching treatment showed the highest growth and yield in black vinyl mulching treatment. The highest dry weight of underground parts per plant in mulching treatment was 47.9g at white shading treatment while the lowest one was 16.5g at black shading treatment. Growth characteristics of underground parts C. officinale under the different mulching treatment were the higher in black vinyl mulching rather than in rice straw mulching and white vinyl mulching. Dry weight of underground parts per plant of C. officinale under the different shading treatments was the highest(37.8g) under the white shading while it was lowest(12. 2g) under the black shading.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the essential oil content and the aromatic constituents in the leaves of Saururus chinensis Baill, Angelica dahurica Fischer and Cnidium officinale Makino. Volatile aromatic compounds in three aromatic medicinal plants were extracted with steam distillation extraction method and identified by GC/MS. Major aromatic compounds in Saururus chinensis Baill were 1,6-octadien-3-ol, 1, 3-benzodioxole, myristicin, ${\alpha}-cadinol$ and patchouene. Major aromatic compounds in Angelica dahurica Fischer were terpinolene, 3-carene, ${\beta}-caryophyllene$, ${\beta}-cubebene$, butylated hydroxy toluene, caryophyllene oxide, piperonal, and in Cnidium officinale Makino were aristolene, benzocycloheptene, ylangene, valencene, ${\beta}-cedrene$, satene, and menthofuran. Essential oil content was highest in Saururus chinensis plant.

  • The effects of Cnidium officinale Makino aqua-acupuncture solution (COMAS) and Cnidium officinale Makino water-extraced solution (COMWS) on the CYP1A1 activity and benzo[a]pyrene(B[a]P)-DNA adduct formation were examined. There were 6.8%, 12.1%, 15.1%, 18.3% and 22.6% inhibition in the activity of cytochrome 4501A1 enzyme with the treatment of $0.1{\times},\;0.5{\times},\;1{\times},\;3{\times},\;and\;5{\times}$ COMAS, respectively. At concentration of $0.1{\times}$ COMAS, the binding of $[^3H]B[a]P$ metabolites to DNA of NCTC-clone 1469 cell was significantly inhibited by 56.9%. These results suggest that COMAS has chemopreventive potential by inhibiting cytochrome P4501A1 activity and benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adduct formation.

  • This study aimed to identify regions with a suitable growth environment for Ligusticum chuanxing Hort. and use basic data to identify appropriate cultivation and stable production strategies. Four main areas of cultivation were selected and the relationship between growth characteristics (aboveground and underground parts) and weather and soil environment was analyzed. Overall growth was found to be significantly higher in Pyeongchang. Atmospheric and soil temperatures showed a significant negative correlation with overall height from the ground, stem diameter, and growth characteristics of the underground part; leaf length and width were positively correlated. As insolation increased, the growth characteristics, excluding leaf size, showed a positive correlation. Soil characteristics such as organic matter (OM), N, P, and K showed negative correlations with the overall height of the upper part and growth characteristics of the underground part, including stem diameter. Analysis of roots indicated that OM, N, P, and K were essential and were absorbed through the soil. The OM, N, P, and K values in the Pyeongchang area, which showed the optimal growth, were lower than those in other areas. It is believed that these results can be used to select cultivation sites for L. chuanxing and establish cultivation technology in future.

  • Mycoplasma-like organisms (MLO) were identified from three plants. The disease symptoms show stunting, yellowing and witche's broom on Cnidium officinale Makino collected from Ulreung Island, Bupleurum falcatum L. collected from Jangsu, and Plantago asiatica L. collected from Daegwanreung. The particles of MLO were observed in the phloem tissues by a Hitachi Hu-11E electron microscope. C. officinale infected with MLO was frequently observed in Ulreung Island.

  • Optimal extraction, separation and capillary rinsing conditions for capillary electrophoresis (CE) were established to discriminate the geographical origin of ligusticum root (Ligusticum wallichii) using 113 samples (domestic sample n = 62, foreign sample n = 51). Ligusticum root was extracted with 30% ethanol and separated on a uncoated fused-silica $(50\;{\mu}m{\times}27\;cm)$ capillary. Conditions for optimal analysis include: temperature, $40^{\circ}C$; voltage, 10 kV; and pressure injection time, domestic and foreign samples were 5 sec and 2 sec, respectively. The optimal separation buffer was 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 2.5) containing 15 mM iminodiacetic acid with 40% methanol. Under the optimal conditions established for CE, the ratio of specific peak area (peak LW-1) to other peak area (peak LW-5) was effective in discrimination geographical origin of ligusticum root. The mean accuracy for correct discrimination of geographical origin of domestic and foreign ligusticum roots were 65% and 63%, respectively.

  • Angelica gigas, Astragalus membranaceus and Ligusticum chuanxiong have been grown for a long time in Korea as medicinal crops with underground parts. Its harvesting method has been depended entirely on manual labor. Therefore, harvesting involved much work. This study was to determine an effective mechanized harvesting method for underground parts of some medicinal crops by several machines. Labor time was decreased by 61 percent in Angelica gigas and by 70 percent in Astragalus membranaceus by the use of poclain harvester, however, in Ligusticum chuanxiong was decreased 68 percent by multi - root harvester compared with conventional system (manual harvest). The poclain harvester was suitable for harvesting in Angelica gigas and Astragalus membranaceus plots, but multi - root harvester was not satisfactory. Multi - root harvester appeared to be appropriate harvester for Ligusticum chuanxing.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influence of various extracts from 21 medicinal plants including Bupleurm falcatum on the germination and growth of Lactuca sativa, Oryza native and E. crus-galli var. crus-galli, and the amount of their phenolic acids, fatty acids and organic acids, Water extract(5%) of all the medicinal plants, particularly Acorus gramineus, Cnidium officinale, Aconitum carmicheali, Bulpeurum falcatum, Zingiber officinale, Angelica gigas and Curcuma zeodaria inhibited over 90% of the lettuce seed germination and growth, indicating that medicinal plants contained the biologically active substances. The highest amount of phenolic compounds was observed in Prunus crmenica var, ansu(30.6013mg/g) followed by Aconitum ciliare(29.1008mg/g) and Cnidium officienale(27.2943mg/g) which inhibited markedly the germination of testing plants, showing the close relation of phenolic compounds to inhibitory effects. Cnidium officinale contained the highest amount of fatty acids(24.10mg/g) and organic acids(21.04mg/g) which may be partly related to inhibitory effects.
