Conservation and analysis of wall painting Goguryeo was performed to classify the unknown fragments. The conservation naked eye observation, optical microscopy, and infrared examination were carried out in order to figure out the structure, quality of constituting materials, and damages such as cracks, and discolored fragments of colored areas. Based on such investigation, conservation was proceeded. and it was completed with strengthening the weakened pigment layer of wall blocks. In addition tombs where the wall painting fragments were excavated were investigated by making comparison with gelatin dry plates and copies possessed by National Museum of Korea. According to the result, they were Kaemachong, Gosan-ri Tomb No.1 Gamsinchong, and Wonbong-ri Tomb. The components of colors with which Goguryeo wall painting fragments were painted and the mineral pigments of the wall layer were analyzed. Portable µ-XRF spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer were employed. It showed that lime (CaCO3) used for the wall layer, and the brown color is hematite(Fe2O3) and cerusite (PbCO3) and lead oxide(PbO) were identified. In the red color, cinnabar (HgS) were detected.
This paper presents the results of a comprehensive nondestructive analysis of Portrait of Master Gowun at Wunamyeongdang Shrine (Hereafter, Portrait of Choe Chiwon), Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 187 of Gyeongsangnam-do, including the underlying images drawn at the time of its production and the pigments present. The analysis revealed that the portrait was produced in 1793 at Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do, which makes it the earliest known example among the extant portraits of Choe Chiwon. X-ray examination found images of a half-length boy monk and a full-length boy monk on either side of the portrait, which had been painted over and became invisible to the naked eye. XRF analysis of the pigments indicated that white lead was used for white, cinnabar and red lead for red, malachite for green, azurite for blue, and gold for gold. It was revealed that the overpainted boy monks were colored using the same pigments as those applied in the portrait of the main figure. It is hoped that the analysis of the pigments used for the boy monks can provide basic materials for research on the production of copied portraits and local Buddhist paintings. Also, additional research drawing upon other fields of study is required to examine the details of the inscription of the portrait.

This study carried out Grain size analysis, SEM-EDS, XRD, P-XRF, FT-IR and ultrasonic exploration for wall-painting. As a result, walls layer used to mineral particles size was mixing the medium-texture and fine texture. painting layers pigments used to base paintings was ocher, white pigments was hobun, red pigments was suckganju, green pigments was suckruk. Also BackuiKannon wall-painting walls damage reason of that was long-term physical shocks. painting layers damage was include detachment or powders. it is affected by temperature and humidity. Therefore in the future conservation of wall-paintings through scientific analysis based on such data, conservation processing is performed through the preservation and enhance the stability of the paintings as a basis for the conservation of management can be utilized.
This study analyzes the , one of the three panels of 《Welcoming Banquets for the Governor of Pyeong-an》, a documentary painting of the late Joseon Dynasty, with the aim to identify the coloring materials used in the painting. The painting was first imaged at each wavelength in order to minimize the potential problems in the process of analyzing specific parts. This study applied X-rays to identify ink, gold, and organic and inorganic pigments and used infrared rays to find ink and copper-based pigments. It also applied hyperspectral imaging to distinguish organic pigments from black, blue, and green materials. It also analyzed spots selected for each color to identify the following materials: white lead (white), ink/indigo (black), a combination of red lead and cinnabar (red), pink dye, purple dye, iron oxides (brown), orpiment/dye (yellow), malachite/malachite and yellow dye/indigo (green), azurite/white lead and indigo/indigo (blue), indigo and cochineal (violet), and gold leaf (gold). It is expected that more efficient analysis will be made possible by securing a sufficient library for each wavelength.

In this study, the material scientific characteristics of Hobun pigments used as white inorganic pigment for traditional cultural heritage were identified according to the type of shell and calcination and evaluated the stability of the preservation environment. For the purpose of this, we collected 2 different types of Hobun pigments made by oyster and clam shell and its calcined products(at 1,150℃). Hobun pigments before calcined identified calcium carbonate such as calcite, aragonite but calcination derived changing main composition to portlandite and calcite. Results of FE-SEM showed characteristics microstructure for each shell but pigments after calcined observed porous structure. Porous granule highly caused oil adsorption according to increase specific surface area of pigments. In addition, the whiteness improved after calcined pigments compared to non-calcined pigments, and the color improvement rate of Hobun pigment (CS) which made of clam shell was higher. As a result of the accelerated weathering test, the Hobun pigment-colored specimen had a color difference value of less than 2 after the test, which was difficult to recognize with the naked eye. In particular, the color stability has improved as the color difference value of the Hobun pigment is smaller after calcined compared to before non-calcined pigment. However, it was confirmed that the stability of the painting layer was lower in the specimen after calcined pigment. For antifungal activity test, Aspergillus niger, Tyromyces palustris and Trametes versicolor were used as test fungi, and all pigments were found to have preventive and protective effects against fungi. Especially, the antifungal effect of the calcined pigment was excellent, which is due to the stronger basicity of the pigment.
We examined degradation characteristics of lead based pigments(white lead, Red lead, Litharge) according to atmospheric environmet condition, for example atmospheric gas(CO2, NO2) and soluble salt. Painted samples not changed material compositions but were occured the color change(𝚫E 4~31) after exposed UV irradiation. All sample were not affected by CO2 gas not only color but chemical composition. However, samples were remakably changed color exposed NO2 gas and it was formed secondary product like as lead nitrate. Such as red lead and white lead samples' color difference were 𝚫E 2 and 𝚫 10 respectively and became dark, along with litharge became bright and color difference was 𝚫E 5 after react with NO2 gas. It confirm that NO2 was influential factor than CO2 in the case of same concentration. Furthermore salt spray test was taken to figure out soluble salt influence in fine dust. The result showed noticeable color change and secondary product was formed on samples' surface. The glue film peeled off or hole, and color changed around the secondary products. After salt spray, XRD pattern showed decrease peak intensity and lower crystalinity. As a result of salt spray test, white lead was formed new product litharge and litharge was formed litharge and minium. According to the results, influential atmospheric factors for conservation of paint pigments were UV, NO2, soluble salt, and litharge was most weakness throughout lead base pigments.
The traditional sizing treatment for the Hanji is performed to give the following functions. Those are to stabilize the paint of the painting, to prevent the paint of painting and moisture from smearing into the painting itself, to prevent the paint of the painting and moisture from passing to the lining paper, and to make the colors of painting match the surrounding. This study analyzed a result of the effect of Hanji sizing characteristic according to glue and alum mixing ratio and applying times, affects to pigments of painting and fastness of Hanji using accelerated aging test. As a result of color measurement of sizing treated Hanji, the concentration of glue and the number of application increased, the brightness and the $L^*$ value decreased but the yellowness index increased.
Wooden standing Bodhisattva in the collection of the National Museum of Korea (Bon 8239) was purchased as part of the museum's Central Asian collection during the Museum of Japanese Goverment General of Korea. The wooden statue exhibiting classical characteristics of Song Dynasty Buddhist sculptures is colored on the whone. The result of condition check for exhibition in 2014, it has severely damaged, with discoloring and exfoliation in color pigment and crack of wood observed in various areas. The object was therefore treated for conservation. A series of analysis were performed also at this time to determine the production technique and the materials, including testing of the X-ray penetration depth, X-ray fluorescence analysis and wood species analysis. This revealed that the statue was made by joining several separate pieces of wood. As for color pigments, the white pigment was either chalk (CaCO3) or gypsum(CaSO4·2H2O), and the green pigment was emerald green (Cu(C2H3O2)2·3Cu(AsO2)2). The red pigment appeared to be lead red(Pb3O4) and the blue pigment was ultramarine blue (3Na2O·3Al2O3·6SiO2·2Na2S). All the pigments were repainted in later eras. The analysis, indicated that the wood was derived from a tree of the genus Populus, family Salicaceae. The wooden standing Bodhisattva was repaired and reinforced with natural materials and was brought to a stable condition necessary for display.

Hayeob pigment is known as one of the traditional dark green pigments, but the color, raw material, and manufacturing method have not been clearly identified. However, comparing the analysis results of the particle shape and constituent minerals of Hayeob pigments revealed through pigment analysis studies of colored cultural properties such as Dancheong, Gwaebul, and paintings, Hayeob pigments appear to be the same as Dongrok pigments produced by salt corrosion. Therefore, in order to restore Hayeob pigment, the manufacturing method of Dongrok pigment was studied based on the records of old literature. The Dongrok pigment manufacturing method confirmed in the old literature records is a natural corrosion method in which copper powder and a caustic are mixed and then left in a humid condition to corrode. Based on this, artificial corrosion using a corrosion tester was adopted to corrode the copper powder more efficiently, and an appropriate mixing ratio was selected by analyzing the state of corrosion products according to the mixing ratio of the caustic agent. In addition, the manufacturing method of Dongrok pigment was established by adding a salt removal process to remove residual caustic agents and a purification process to increase chroma during pigment coloring. The prepared Dongrok pigments have a bluish green or green color, show an elliptical particle shape and a form in which small particles are aggregated, and a porous surface is observed. The main constituent elements are copper(Cu) and chlorine(Cl), and the main constituent mineral is identified as atacamite [Cu2Cl(OH)3]. As a result of an accelerated weathering test to evaluate the stability of the prepared Dongrok pigments, it was found that the greenness partially decreased and the yellowness significantly increased as deterioration progressed. Before deterioration, the Dongrok pigments had lower yellowness compared to the Hayeob pigments of the old Dancheong, but after deterioration, yellowness increased significantly, and it was found to have a similar chromaticity range as Dancheong's Hayeob pigments. As a result, the prepared Dongrok pigments were confirmed to be similar to Dancheong's Hayeob pigments in terms of color as well as particle shape and constituent minerals.
For the conservation treatment of the Central Asia mural painting which is to be exhibited in the new museum in Yongsan, we analyzed the pigments used in this mural painting and examined to identify the species of the straw in the wall. We also analyzed the species of the wood of the wooden protective frame and the material of the paper in it, in order to review the material and technique of the conservation treatment performed before the mural painting had been brought to the National Museum of Korea in 1916. The results were as follows: the black pigments of Bon4075 and Bon4078 is carbon(C); the white pigment on the background is gypsum[Ca(SO)4(H2O)2]; the red pigment is lead oxide(Pb3O4) and hematite(Fe2O3) etc. The straw, which had been mixed into the wall to prevent the wall from cracking, was proved to be either wheat straw or oats straw. The wooden protective frame, which protects the mural painting now, was proved to be made of Salix, Populus, Cryptomeria japonica and pine. The paper discovered in the frame was proved to be made of the bark of a mulberry.
