A Study on the Development History and Growth Strategies of Korean Creative Buddhist Hymns as Buddhist Ritual Contents (불교 의식용 콘텐츠로서 한국 창작 찬불가의 발전사 및 성장 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the periodic characteristics of creative Buddhist hymns in our country, and confirm the role of Buddhist hymns in popularizing Buddhism and the activities and meanings of pioneers who contributed to such Buddhist hymns. The further purpose of this study is to confirm the utility of Buddhist hymns. In the present, the problems of Buddhist hymns can be pointed out as follows. First, some Buddhist hymns which were created about 50 years ago are used, so that new Buddhist hymns can not be established. Second, their degree of completion as music are not sufficient. Third, it is insufficient to study the miswriting of transmitted Buddhist hymns. Fourth, there is no systematical management of Buddhist hymns. The countermeasures for these problems can be presented as follows. First, it is necessary to expand the utilization of Buddhist hymns in Buddhist ceremonies. Second, new creative Buddhist hymns are required. Third, the religious body should reinforce its support for promoting interests in Buddhist hymns. Fourth, it is necessary to activate temple concerts in order to strengthen the popularization of Buddhist hymns. First of all, it is required to confirm the usefulness of creative Buddhist hymns for popularizing Buddhism and create and utilize new Buddhist hymns appropriate to contemporary senses.

  • Focusing on head temples in 25 parishes of Jogye Order, this study compared and analyzed the ancient literatures involved in the writing source of pillar tablets and the space layout drawings in order to examine awareness patterns of space in terms of contents of pillar tablets and Buddha and Bodhisattva enshrined in major temple sanctums in Korea. The research findings are briefed as follow: First, the different Buddhas enshrined in sanctums can be categorized and explained in accordance with their body(體), form(相) and use(用) based on Awakening of Mahayana Faith. In particular, Sakyamuni Buddha is for form(相), Amitabha Buddha and Avalokiteśvara for use(用), and Vairocana Buddha for body(體). Second, the pillar tablets of main sanctums signify oath and thoughts of the enshrined Buddhas and Bodhisattvas focusing on main Buddhas and serving Buddhas. Third, the content of pillar tablets is to symbolize and signify Buddha land where main Buddhas are always existing as they are focusing on the enshrined main Buddhas. That is, such content is to praise for Buddha. Fourth, every sanctum pillar tablets of temples express the content of attaining spiritual enlightenment for the self-cultivating truth seekers and saving all sentient beings for main Buddhas who are saving human. That is, every space of temples are perceived as "escaping torment and achieving pleasure(避苦得樂)".

Consideration and Prospect of the Historical Development of The Korean Buddhist music (한국 불교음악의 역사적 전개 고찰과 전망)

  • The history of The Korean Buddhist music dates back to as early as the 2nd year of Goguryeo King Sosoorim's reign (372) when Buddhism was introduced to the land for the first time and should cover the entire development to this date, which spans over 1,600 years. The extensive scope of research is overwhelming and research efforts are limited at best. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine how the historical development of The Korean Buddhist music has unfolded over such a long period of time and to understand how the Buddhist music is supposed to further develop in this land in and after the 21st century. Since the Three Kingdoms period, followed by Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty period, Japanese colonial period, and to this date, the history of the Buddhist music has unfolded in line with the 'ups and downs of the history of Buddhism'. The Buddhist music is characterized by various development paths based on historical peculiarities over different periods, including protection by the royal family during the Three Kingdoms period, aspect of Buddhist music during the Goryeo Dynasty period, policy to worship Confucianism and suppress Buddhism during the Joseon Dynasty period, harsh repression of Buddhism during the Japanese colonial period, and the present Buddhist music seeking new ways of proliferating Buddhism among the public, which requires an effort to understand the different characteristics of different periods by identifying key perspectives and tasks of Buddhist music in different periods. In this vein, this article includes not only the history of 'Beompae(Buddhist Chant)', a collective term for Buddhist music in a narrow sense but also all Buddhist music characterized by with Buddhism that is communicated in this land and extends its coverage even to Chanbulga(Buddhist hymn)讚佛歌 music created in and after the 20th century. It also examines the historical development of Buddhism related music in this land. Another task of this article is to understand the Myeongching-gagok 名稱歌曲 sung by monks in the early Joseon Dynasty period, music created for public mission work during the Joseon Dynasty period, the meaning of the existence of 'Hwacheong' 和請, and the traces of Buddhist music existing in the music of the Joseon Dynasty period.
