Softening of Astringent Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) as Affected by Harvest Time, Temperature, and Ethephon Treatment (수확기, 온도 및 Ethephon 처리에 따른 떫은감 (Diospyros kaki Thunb.)의 연화)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of harvest time, temperature and ethephon on the softening of astringent persimmon 'Cheongdobansi'. The persimmon was harvested on Sep. 21 (early season harvesting) and Oct. 11 (optimum season harvesting). Quality changes were evaluated at 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ after ethephon treatment. Seventy percent of hardness decrease occurred during the first 2 days of treatment at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$, and hardness was slowly decreased after 6 days. The treatment of $10^{\circ}C$ was not effective on inducing fruit softening. Soluble tannin content was sharply decreased 6 days after ethephon treatment at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ regardless the harvest time, whereas this was much slower in control. Hunter 'L' and 'b' values were increased until 2 days, and then decreased with the early harvested persimmon. The Hunter values were decreased until the 8th day of storage in fruit harvested at optimum season.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the appropriate hydroponic system when cherry tomatoes were grown in summer. The base diameter of the trunk, leaf length, leaf width, and the length of cluster were good in deep flow culture(DFC), and not different between NFT and rockwool culture. The first time of flowering and the fruit coloring per cluster were not different among cultural systems, but the marketable yields were good in DFC. In DFC, % dry weight, firmness, the content of organic acid and sugar were low, and the ratio of sugar/organic acid and vitamin C were high. So DFC is recommended for the summer cultivation of cherry tomatoes.

Influence of Seasonal incidence and Defoliation Degree of Marssonina Blotch on Fruit Quality and Shoot Growth of 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Tree (갈색무늬병의 시기별 이병 및 낙엽 정도가 '후지'/M.9 사과나무의 과실품질 및 신초생장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the influence of seasonal incidence and defoliation degree caused by Marssonina blotch (Diplocarpon mali Harada et Sawamura) on shoot growth and fruit quality of 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree. The occurrence of marssonina blotch in Gunwi region was observed from the mid of July 2009, and percentage of defoliation was about 10% in the end of October. In 2010, that started in the early of June. By the end of September, percentage of defoliation was 20% and it reached 50% in late October. Secondary growth of terminal shoot in 2010 was three times as much as that in 2009. In 2009, the soluble solid contents and the red color (hunter a value) during fruit maturation increased to $13.8^{\circ}Brix$ and 16.2, respectively. In 2010, the soluble solid content during fruit maturation remained in the $12.1-12.6^{\circ}Brix$ range after early October, and the red color began to increase after the end of September when the percentage of defoliation was 20%. As for fruit quality by defoliation degree, the red color decreased when defoliation percentage of bourse shoot at the end of October was more than 30%. Fruit weight and soluble solids also decreased when defoliation percentage was more than 50%. Fruit length and diameter of over 30% defoliation treatments begun to decrease after the middle of August, compared with those of under 30% defoliation treatment. Photosynthetic rate of the leaves that was located at the secondary growth of bourse shoot was similar to that of leaves which was located at the middle of bourse shoot. However, the size and the soluble solid content of fruit were not affected by photosynthesis activities of bourse shoot leaves which was develop in the secondary shoot growth.

Weed Control System, Yield and Quality Characteristic by Cropping System in Wet-Hill-Seeding Use Black Colored Rice (흑미 무논점파 재배방법에 따른 수량 및 품질특성과 잡초방제체계)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the change of yield and quality according to seeding time and planting density and to determine effective weed control method in wet-hill-seeding use black colored rice. The most effective weed control system was application of bromobutide thiobencarb five days before seeding followed by bensulfuron mefenacet thiobencarb 12 days after seeding (barnyardgrass at 2.5-3.0 leaf stage). The seedling stand by seeding time and planting density increased with the delay seeding time and high planting density. The heading dates were delayed as the seeding time became late but no difference was found between planting density. The anthocyanin content of black colored rice was higher at late seeding time and lower planting density. The yield of full colored rice was high 80 plants per $3.3m^2$ in seeding on May 30 and June 10. This information could be useful for spreading rice direct seeding by inducing stabilization of wet-hill-seeding use black colored rice.

The Effect of Several Paper Bags on Fruit Skin Coloration of Red Skin European Pear 'Kalle' (봉지종류가 적색과피 서양배 'Kalle'의 과피색 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between light and coloring and to obtain basic results for promoting redness expression in 'Kalle' (Pyrus communis L.) pear skin. It was investigated in location of anthocyanin layer by microscopic observation and differences in skin color expression of 'Kalle' bagged with paper bag which has different light transmittance rate and inside temperature. However, there was no anthocyanin layer in the brown skin and golden yellow color, anthocyanin layer was distributed in epidermins or hyperdermis of red skin pear and apple. Dark red colored 'Kalle' had more anthocyanin content, $29.8mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ FW than light red colored apple 'Hongro'. Light transmittance rate of physical characteristics used paper bags was the highest in white paper bag, 42.2% and it also had more light quantity, $8.9{\mu}mol$ than any other tested paper bags in specific wave length 650-655 nm. The maximum temperature of inner bag was higher about $3^{\circ}C$ in yellow paper bag. The red coloration and anthocyanin contents in no bagged fruits were higher than in any other bagged fruit. However, red color expression among the bagged fruits was higher in white paper bag than in double layered black paper bag and yellow paper bag. Also, chromaticity value seemd to be a good index to explain variation of fruit skin color, because anthocyanin content and chromaticity value were higher. Based on these results, it is desirable to cultivate 'Kalle' without bag for stable redness expression but bagging is essential for decreasing damage by insect in Korea. Further examination to find suitable time of removing paperbag for redness expression and decreasing insect damage. In addition, it is required to develop paperbag whose transmittance rate is high in specific light wavelength or temperature of inner bags is low. Effects of Supplemental Lighting on Growth and Yield of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Hydroponic Culture under Low Levels of Natural Light in Winter (동계시설내 보광이 수경재배 착색단고추(Capsicum annum L.)의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of supplemental lighting on the growth and yield of hydroponically grown sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. sprit) under low levels of natural light in winter. The plants were treated with natural light only (control), 3-hour supplemental lighting before sunrise, after sunrise and after sunset with high pressure sodium (HPS, 400W). As the result of these three treatments, the supplemental lighting promoted photosynthesis in the low light intensity condition and particularly photosynthesis was more active right after sun rise in the morning, 1.5-$3.0{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ comparing to those of supplemental lighting after sunset, 0.5-$1.5{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Transpiration rate and stomatal conductance sharply increased with supplemental lighting after sunrise then they decreased again after turning the lights off. Stomatal size was observed $32.2{\mu}m^2$ after supplemental lighting, whereas the size of the natural light was almost closed at $7.7{\mu}m^2$. The average plant height of sweet papper cv. spirit was 185 cm before sunrise, 188 cm after sunrise and 208 cm after sunset with supplemental lighting for 3hours while the control was 171 cm. With supplemental lighting a better number of fruit set per plant was measured 4.3 before and after sunrise, 3.7 after sunset but 2.6 in the control. Interestingly, there were no significant differences in the sugar content ($^{\circ}Brix$) degree between treatment of supplemental lighting, whereas slight differences between seasons were seen. The marketable fruit yield of sweet pepper (cv. spirit) was $116.0kg{\cdot}ha$ with supplemental lighting, whereas the control (natural light only) was $75.8kg{\cdot}ha$. Despite of spending electricity and depreciation cost, the economic analysis showed net income with supplemental lighting after sunrise was 51% higher than control treatment in cv. spirit.

Skin Coloration and Endogenous Hormonal Changes of 'Kyoho' Grape by High Temperature at Veraison (변색기 고온에 의한 포도 '거봉'의 과피 착색 및 내생 호르몬 변화)

  • We analyzed the anthocyanin accumulation, abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA) contents and metabolic genes expression in berry skins under high temperature (High T) at veraison, in order to investigate the cause of bad coloration of 'Kyoho' grape due to High T in summer season. The coloration of 'Kyoho' grapes was stopped by High T for 10 days from veraison, and the fruit quality was not affected except skin color. Total anthocyanin of skins was decreased by High T treatment and malvidin and peonidin were decreased compared to control. In berry skins, ABA content did not decrease by High T treatment, but it was rather higher than that of control. GA content was increased about two times compared to the control after 10 days of High T treatment, which caused decreased ratio of ABA/GA. Analysis of expression of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes showed that the early biosynthetic genes were not affected by High T and the expression of UFGT was decreased by temperature treatment. ABA biosynthetic gene expressions were not affected by High T and the expression of GA20ox1 and GA2ox1/2, which are known to regulate the biosynthesis and inactivation of GA, were increased and decreased by High T, respectively. Therefore, the bad coloration of 'Kyoho' grapes under the High T at veraison was due to inhibition of anthocyanin biosynthesis of skin, and it was suggested that the anthocyanin biosynthesis was controlled by the ratio of ABA and GA rather than ABA content.

Comparison of Fruit Characteristics of 'Fuji'/M.26 in Response to Ethephon Treatment and Combined Treatment of Ethephon and CaCl2 During Maturing Stages (Ethephon 단용처리와 Ethephon 및 염화칼슘 혼합처리에 따른 사과 'Fuji'/M.26의 성숙기 과실특성 비교)

  • The harvest time of the late-ripening 'Fuji' apple (Malus × domestica) is variable, depending on the coloration of the fruit skin. Ethephon, a plant growth regulator, promotes the ethylene production and induces physiological responses associated with fruit maturation in climacteric fruit crops, such as apples. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ethephon treatment on fruit characteristics after fruit enlargement, with the objective of proposing an economical and stable harvest control method for 'Fuji'/M.26 apples. Fruit characteristics were assessed at 10-days intervals following the application of 100 mg/L ethephon and mixture of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at 145 days after full bloom (DAFB). Starch contents of ethephon-treated (ET) and ethephon with CaCl2-treated (EC) apples began to decrease from 155 DAFB, and the starch contents of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest were similar to those of control at harvest time. Red coloration of fruit skin in EC was lower compared to ET but higher than control. The average fruit firmness was low in ET, while the control and EC exhibited similar levels of firmness. Fruit sugar acid ratios did not show significant differences between treatments. However, the titratable acidity of EC was significantly lower than that of the control at 10 days before harvest. Moreover, fruit sugar acid ratio of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest in 2021 was similar to their sugar acid ratio at harvest time. Therefore, it was thought that fruit maturation and skin coloration could be accelerated by 10 days from the harvest time through the combined treatment of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at the end of fruit enlargement in 'Fuji'/M.26.

Productivity and Fruit Quality according to Training Methods and Harvesting Bate on Paprika during Summer Culture in Highland (고랭지 착색단고추의 여름재배시 유인방법에 따른 생산성과 품질)

  • This experiment was conducted to analysis the fruit quality according to training method under low plastic film greenhouse cultivation on sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum cv Special) during summer culture. Training treatments were upright training and inclination training, the fruits were examined and analysed with a month interval from June to November on productivity, fiuit weight, flesh thickness, contents of soluble solids, hardness, shape, and locules. Productivity per month was the highest on June, upright training harvested more than inclination training. Fruit weight of inclination training on June was 232 g which was higher than 26 g of upright training, but upright training was heavier than inclination training after July. Flesh thickness of upright training was thicker than inclination training. Soluble solids content increased with the decrease of temperature, upright training was higher than inclination training. The fruit shape of upright training was not significant according to harvesting date. The number of locules of upright training was $3.27\sim3.34$, and it was not significant according to harvesting date.

Effects of Development Time and Severity of Rice Ear Blight on Rice Yield and Quality (벼 이삭마름병 발병시기와 정도가 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Grain discoloration, caused by several microorganisms, is a minor disease, but it is gaining importance in almost all rice growing areas of the world in recent years. Such grains are of low market value and consumption appeal in addition to their abnormal performance as seed of source of nutrient value. When the casual agents were inoculated on rice plant,'Ilmi-byeo'(at right before heading time and on heading time), the incidence of rice ear blight caused by Alternaria alternate and Nigrospora oryzae was higher in a plot inoculated at right before heading time than (in n plot inoculated) on heading time. Meanwhile, the incidence of rice ear blight caused by Bipolaris oryzae and Curvularia lunate was higher in a plot inoculated on heading time than in a plot inoculated at right before heading time. In rice quality, the ratio of imperfect grains was increased at right before heading time or on heading time by Nigrospora oryzae or Alternaria alternata, respectively. As discoloration rate of rice grains increased on 'Ilmi-byeo', the percentage of perfect grains decreased proportionally and the percentage of damaged rice grains increased remarkably.
