White light-emitting diode (WLED) is growing interest in using both illumination and communications. This paper reports visible light communication (VLC) composed of a super bright white light-emitting diode, low cost commercial photo-diode and a Fresnel lens. LED driver is consisted of the power MOSFET and MOSFET driver that switches the LED on and off. The modulation bandwidth of the LED used was determined to be 8 MHz. However, it was possible to communicate up to 1 Mbps under illumination of 500 lx because of the weak signal power and a low spectral sensitivity of the SHF213 as a PIN photodiode. In order to enhance the system bandwidth, the LED light was focused on the PIN photodiode by use of the Fresnel lens. As a result of that, visible light link was operated up to modulation bandwidth of the LED. The signal to noise ratio can be improved by 40 dB using an optical concentration at the receiver.

Purpose: We have analyzed the transmittance distribution of the ocular lens using local transmittance microscope to investigate the optical homogeneity of the lens. Methods: The transmittance of the laser which is focused on the surface of the ocular lens was measured by using the photo-detector and lock-in amplifier and analyzed. Multi-coated, uncoated, and progressive lenses were analyzed. Results: In the measurement of the progressive lens and a physical stimulated lens, local transmittance microscopy analysis showed a high degree of match with the measurement results through the optical microscope. In addition, the average value of the transmittance is reduced and the standard deviation was increased in the presence of optical defects. In unstimulated lens, there are a large impact on transmittance whether the anti-reflective coating is presence or absence in both the local transmittance microscopy and general transmittance analysis. Conclusions: The distribution of the transmittance measured by local transmission microscopy were changed when the various stimulus is applied to the lenses. These analyzes by local transmission microscopy can be utilized as a way to evaluate or determine the uniformity of the coating film or lens.

CF(Circular Fresnel) POF(Plastic Optical Fiber) daylighting system is a beam daylighting system utilizing solar direct beam radiation. In this study, a CF POF daylighting system has been introduced, developed and applied to KIER test buildings. The CF POF daylighting system consists of three parts: light collector, light transmitter and light diffuser. The light collector includes a Circular Fresnel lens focusing solar direct illuminance by sun tracking. The light transmitter contains the POF cable which has light transmission loss of 4.5% per meter. The light diffuser has about 80% diffuser efficiency. This study aims to evaluate of POF daylighting system performance. At the results of a CFPOF system performance evaluation, the theoretical CFPOF system efficiency was 41.9% and the actual CFPOF system efficiency at the KIER test building was 37.5%. The difference was due partly to the connecting efficiency.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the performance of a concentrating photovoltaic cell (CPV) against temperature. It is know that a high efficiency of a CPV can be achieved only with proper cell temperature as well as high concentration ratio (CR). This study is concerned with appropriate cooling condition for a liquid-convection cooler for the best performance of a specific CPV. A series of experiments was conducted in a range of cell temperatures as a result of varying cooling conditions, while the concentration ratio was 390 and the solar irradiation flux was higher than 900 $W/m^2$ in outdoor environment. The CPV had a planar dimension of 10 by 10 mm. A Fresnel lens was used as a concentrator, of which the dimension was 221 mm(W) ${\times}$ 221 mm(L) ${\times}$ 3 mm(t) and the transmissivity was known to be 0.8. The cooler was attached to the bottom side of the CPV and had a contact area of 21 mm(W) ${\times}$ 26 mm(L), which was identical to the size of the base plate of the CPV. The coolant temperature was controlled by an isothermal bath and the flow rate was controlled and measured by a flowmeter. The experimental results showed that the average of power efficiency of the CPV decreased from 28.6 % to 24.7 % as the cell temperature increased from $36^{\circ}C$ to $97^{\circ}C$. An appropriate cooling method of a CPV might increase the power conversion efficiency by about 4% for the same concentration ratio. Discussion is included from the viewpoint of the combined efficiency in addition to the power efficiency.

We developed a 2-D imaging system to detect ultra weak biophoton by using a high sensitive fast CCD camera. We installed an illumination apparatus to generate delayed luminescence from plant leaves. Shutters at the illumination system and detector were synchronized to each other. The lens system of the CCD camera was newly designed to accommodate the specific requirements to enhance the collection efficiency for biophoton. Based on the lens simulation, commercial lenses were chose for the lens system. All the equipment was installed in a multi-purpose dark box and the delayed luminescence of Euonymus japonica was successfully acquired.

In this paper, we propose a simple and low-cost fabrication method of polymer microlens using solvent-vapor-assisted reflow (SVAR). Metal molds for replication of polymer were fabricated using micro milling and the cylindrical shape of polymer was imprinted using hot-embossing process. The cylindrical shape of polymer was changed to hemispherical lens shape by SVAR. The characteristics of fabricated microlens were evaluated according to the condition of SVAR such as temperature and time. The focal length of polymer microlens could be controlled more easily in low-temperature and long-time condition than in high-temperature and short-time condition. That is, the level of concentrated light to focal point could be improved through the control of temperature and time. Also, we confirmed that toluene was more appropriate solvent than acetone in fabrication of PMMA polymer microlens using SVAR.
An LCD backlight unit (BLU) using RGB light sources is designed and simulated, in order to improve its optical energy efficiency. A color-matching BLU is designed with a lenticular lens array (LLA) with elements that image the linear RGB light sources onto the RGB subpixels of the color filter. Type-A and Type-B simulations are performed, according to the location of the light sources. As a result, the luminance increases to 210% in Type-A and 270% in Type-B respectively. The optimum values for the height and the gap of the LLA for maximum efficiency are found to be $25{\mu}m$ and $3{\mu}m$ respectively.
