  • The combined ADEPT(Anaerobic Digestion Elutriated Phased Treatment)-SHARON(Single reactor system for High Ammonium Removal Over nitrite)-ANAMMOX(Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) processes were operated for resources recovery and nitrogen removal from slurry-type piggery waste. The ADEPT process operated at an acidogenic loading rates of 3.95 gSCOD/L-day, the SCOD elutriation rate and acid production rate were 5.3 gSCOD/L-day and 3.3 gVFAs(as COD)/L-day, respectively. VS reduction and SCOD reduction by the hydrolysis were 13% and 0.19 $gSCOD_{prod.}/gVS_{feeding}$, respcetively. Also, the acid production rate was 0.80 $gVFAs/gSCOD_{prod}$. In methanogenic reactor, the gas production rate and methane content were 2.8 L/day($0.3m^3CH_4/kgCOD_{removal}@STP$) and 77%, respectively. With these operating condition, the removals of nitrogen and phosphorus were 94.1% as $NH_4-N$(86.5% as TKN) and 87.3% as T-P respectively.

  • In order to meet the stringent requirement of sludge disposal and to find ecological alternative, aerobic digestion coupled with alkaline pretreatment was studied. The treated sludge was tested for the potential of liquid fertilizer. In the aerobic digestion, it was obvious that the performance of digester B(fed with the sludge pretreated by NaOH) was better than that of digester A(fed with raw sludge) in terms of COD and SS removal. SS and VSS removal rates in digester B were 66% and 69%, respectively. At 5 days, TSS removal rate reached 47% in the digester B, which was 71% of final TSS removal rate. It revealed that the pretreatment process can shorten the retention time of aerobic digestion. 94.1% of TCOD in the raw sludge was reduced by alkaline pretreatment and aerobic digestion. Final SCOD was in the range of 220$\sim$230 mg/L implying the sludge was stabilized. Nitrification and pH drop were observed in the aerobic digestion. Final nitrate concentrations in digester A and B were 445.4 and 223.1 mg/L and final pH in digester B was 3.0. Biological assays reported that leaf size of cucumber seedling increased with nitrate concentration and sludge to soil ratio. The sludge treated by alkaline and aerobic digestion promoted the growth of seedling leaf and stem remarkably compared to raw sludge. In contrast, the aerobically digested sludge without pretreatment improved leaf growth and inhibited stem growth.

  • To investigate nitrogen supplying effect of some slowrelease N-fertilizers on barley in upland soil sulfurcoated urea(SCU), ureaform and melamine (1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triamine) were treated and compared to urea. In addition, thiourea as a nitrification inhibitor was also tested. Effects of variable soil condition such as moisture content, pH and temperature on nitrogen supplying ability of the fertilizers and on growth of barley were studied through incubation test and pot culture and the obtained results were summarized as follows: The releasing rate of ammonia from urea, SCU, ureaform and melamine were resulted as 27-59%, 25-39%, 9-34% and 0.7-4.3% at maximum conversion rate, respectively. Nitrification rate of the tested fertilizers was higher at pH 6.54 markedly than at pH 4.73. Addition of thourea depressed the formation of $NO_3$ during four weeks of incubation period. Mixed application of ureaform with small amount of urea contributed to nitrogen supply till latter growth stage of barely Basal application of melamine showed lowest nitrogen supplying ability and injurious response on barley growth.

  • The amino acid pattern of embryo and endosperm of brown rice different in specific gravity was investigated using Jinheung (local leading temperate variety) and IR667-Suweon 213 (high-yielding newly bred tropical variety). 1. Embryo of IR667 (higher protein rice) showed lower protein, and lower lysine or essential amino acid per protein than that of Jinheung (lower protein rice). 2. In both embryo and endosperm nitrogen recovery as amino acids was highest in middle class of specific gravity and lowest in low class indicating that abundancy of non-protein nitrogen in low class and decomposition of amino acids by starch in high specific gravity class. 3. In both embryo and endosperm IR667 showed abundancy in order of glutamic acid, aspartic acid while Jinheung showed glutamic acid, arginine, suggesting varietal difference in nitrogen metabolism. 4. In both IR667 and Jinheung least amino acid was histidine and next leucine in embryo but histidine and next threonine in endosperm, suggesting organ difference in nitrogen metabolism.

  • White rot fungi, Phanerochaete sp. EJ-31L, was evaluated for its ability to decolorize Remazol Black B, an azo dye that is a widespread pollutant in the wastewater of textile industry. It was observed that extent of decolorization by Phanerochaete sp. EJ-31L was dependent on the concentrations of co-carbon and nitrogen source. Effects of agitation and aeration were studied, and agitated culture at aeration condition resulted in greater extent of decolorization than static culture. Remazol Black B was readily decolorized up to 95% within 64 hr by Phanerochaete sp. EJ-31L.

  • Although formation of organic chloramines have been studied for decades, most of them have involved model organic compounds (e.g., amino acids) but not naturally occurring organic nitrogen in water. This study investigated formation of organic chloramines during chlorination of 16 natural organic matters (NOM) solutions which were isolated from surface water and contained dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Organic chloramine yields per chlorine consumption was $0.25mg-Cl_2/mg-Cl_2$. Upon chlorination of NOM solutions, organic chloramines were rapidly formed within 10 minutes. The average organic chloramine yields upon addition of chlorine in to NOM solutions were $0.78mg-Cl_2/mg-DON$ at 10 minutes and $0.16mg-Cl_2/mg-DON$ at 24 hours. Organic chloramine yields increased as the dissolved organic carbon/dissolved organic nitrogen (DOC/DON) ratios decreased. Chlorination of molecular weight (10,000 Da) fractionated samples showed that the influence of DON molecular weights on the organic chloramine formation was minimal.

  • In order to treat of alkaline dye-processing wastewater, alkalophilic strains biodegrading azo dye, Acid red 1, is isolated from natural system, and optimal culture conditions are examined using response surface analysis, statistical analysis system program. 15 different species which grow in alkaline culture media are isolated from the effluent and river soil discharged from wastewater treatment plant in dye industrial complex. One strain which has the best decolorization efficiency is chosen, and named as AR-1. The result of the examination of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources which have influence on growth and decolorization reveals that optimum carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources are 1.0% fructose, 1.0% polypeptone, 1.0% yeast extract and 0.5% $K_2HPO_4$, respectively. In order to optimize of biodegradation conditions of dye by response surface analysis, the characteristics of decolorization and cell growth according to culture temperature and time are monitered. The result shows that the one is optimum 34.77$^{\circ}C$ for 12.97 hours; the other at 34.73$^{\circ}C$ for 12.96 hours. While, optimal conditions of culture that satisfy both cell growth and decolorization are the temperatures from 32.86$^{\circ}C$ to 36.36$^{\circ}C$ and the period of 10.96 to 15.75 hours, respectively.

  • To investigate the effects of waste sludge from antibiotic fermentation on the growth of young radish and chemical properties of soil, five levels of fertilizer, control (recommended fertilizer, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O=160-59-104$ kg/ha), AS(control + sludge 1,000 kg/ha), AC(control + conventional compost 1,000 kg/ha), SNS(control - subtracting 30% N of sludge + sludge 1,000 kg/ha) and SNC(control - subtracting 30% N of conventional compost + conventional compost 1,000 kg/ha) were applied and radish was grown twice with same treatments on May and August in 1998. Germination rate and early growth of young radish grown with AS and SNS were lower than those grown in control and with AC, SNC. This negative effects by adding the sludge in the early growth seemed to be caused by damage of ammonia gas released during degradation of the sludge in soil. However, yield of young radish showed no significant difference among all the treatments including the AS and SNS at the 1st and 2nd experiment, and these suggested that the latter half of growth of young radish was accelerated by adding the sludge. Contents of T-N in young radish and inorganic N in soil showed a tendency to increase by adding the sludge while antibiotic substance, cephalosporin-C, was not detected in plant material and soils after harvest of young radish in both experiments. Consequently, waste sludge from antibiotic fermentation, which contains high levels of organic matter and nitrogen could be used as an useful resource in agriculture.

  • Bottom sediment-river water samples were studied to determine the extent of biodegradable matter and to examine the reduction of COD, TKN and TOC by using of warburg and aerated batch reactor. Warburg studies were conducted to study the Oxygen Uptake Rates, Reaction Rate Constants and CBOD. Bacth reator studies were conducted to determine the reduction of COD, TKN and TOC. Results from the batch recator study indicate high concentration of COD in samples. Less than 10 precent of the Organic Carbon was found to be biodegradable in 48 hours of Warburg experiment. Appreciable Immediate Oxygen Demand of sediments suggests that dredging of the river bottom is likely to deplete dissolved significantly in the river water.
