  • In order to study the effect of dietary krill meal on the performance and the utilization of protein and energy, broiler chicks fed on the experimental diets containing 0.0%, 0.5% and 1.0% krill meal, respectively, and injected Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysacharide(LPS) (Immunological stress) in 2nd week of age during 3 weeks of experimental period. Dietary krill meal did not affect daily gain and feed efficiency but the immunological stress lowered daily gain and feed intake and nitrogen balance and increased liver and spleen weight and the energy utilization of bird. The uric acid excretion was accelerated by immunological stress.

  • Three experiments were performed to test the assumption that imbalanced dietary amino acid mixtures must lead to increased heat production (HP). The first experiment was based on diets formulated to have a wide range of crude protein (CP) concentrations but a fixed concentration of lysine, formulated to be the first-limiting amino acid. In the second (converse) experiment, lysine concentration was varied over a wide range while CP content was kept constant. To prevent the masking of dietary effects by thermoregulatory demands, the third experiment was performed at 30 $^{\circ}C$ with the diets similar to the diets used in the second experiment. The detailed relationships among amino acid balance, nitrogen (N) metabolism and energy (E) metabolism were investigated in a computer-controlled chamber calorimetry system. The results of experiments were compared with the predictions of a computerised simulation model of E metabolism. In experiment 1. with constant lysine and varying CP, there was a 75 % increase in N intake as CP concentration increased. This led to a 150 % increase in N excretion. with no significant change in HP. Simulated HP agreed with the empirically determined results in not showing a trend with dietary CP. In experiment 2, with varying lysine but constant CP, there was a 3-fold difference in daily weight gain between the lowest and highest lysine diets. HP per bird increased significantly with dietary lysine concentration. There was still an effect when HP was adjusted for body weight differences, but it failed to maintain statistical significance. Simulated HP results agreed in showing little effect of varying lysine concentration and growth rate on HP. Based on the results of these two experiments, the third experiment was designed to test the response of birds to dietary lysine in high ambient temperature. In experiment 3 which performed at high ambient temperature (30 $^{\circ}C$), HP per bird increased significantly with dietary lysine content, whether or not adjusted for body-weight. The trend was greater than in the previous experiment (20 $^{\circ}C$).

  • The tendency of metabolism in oyster, Crassostrea gigas, was investigated in relation to the water temperature and salinity. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were measured and O:N ratio were calculated according to the water temperature from February 2007 to September 2008 and body size. The relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight has been examined in C. gigas. The weight-specific oxygen consumption rate (mg $O_2$/g/h) varied inversely with size. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion increased with an increase in water temperature. O:N ratio measured in this study ranged from 8 to 40 under ordinary sea water and the ratio was 8 at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16 at $10^{\circ}C$. This indicates that oyster mainly use the protein as the primary catabolic substrate during gametogenesis. Lower O:N ratio in winter suggests that oysters have to meet their energy demand by metabolizing protein to survive in stressful conditions such as low temperature and lack of sufficient food supply. This studies will provide the basic data for oyster culture farm in assessing the carrying capacity and sustainable management.

  • The respiratory experiment was made on laying hen fed acclimented to three temperatures of 10, 20, and 30$^{\circ}C$. 1. The FHP of laying hen decreased with increasing room temperature. 2. The feed intake and heat production(HP) all decreased with increasing temperature. However, the highest energy retention was found with optimum temperature (20$^{\circ}C$). 3, The MEm's were 128,110, and 110kcalkg 0.75 for the 10, 20, and 30$^{\circ}C$ of room temperature. The NAME's were 64,78, and 69 percent for the respective room temperature. The results indicated that the highest NAME was obtained with optimum temperature(20$^{\circ}C$). 4. Although there was no significant difference in the nitrogen retention(NR) at different temperatures, the NR was maximum at the optimum temperature(20$^{\circ}C$). 5. The experimental results suggest that in the Bone of thermal neutrality under cooler and hotter conditions heat loss is more dependent on the environmental temperature.

  • This study was performed to investigate effects of ethanol and dietary protein levels on protein metabolism in 15-week-old male rats given a normal diet. Rats were divided into 8 groups : control group (165 protein, 16 PC) and 8%(8PE), 16%(16PE) and 24% protein groups (24PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed into their drinking water after 4 weeks and 10 weeks. Body weight gain, organ weight, serum glucose concentration and liver protein concentrations were not affected by either ethanol or dietary protein levels. Serum total protein concentrations after 10 weeks were significantly increased in the 16 PE and 24PE groups compared with that of control group. Serum albumin concentrations after 10 weeks were significantly increased in all the ethanol-administered groups than that of control group. Fecal and urinary nitrogen metabolism wee not affected by ethanol.

  • Effects of nitrogen sources oi phosphorus sensitivity in soybeans were investigated using three nitrogen source ($NH_4-N,\;NO_3-N$ and urea) and six cultivars (Lee, Hill, R56-49, Harosoy, Clark-63 and Chippewa), differing in phosphorus sensitivity. Growth inhibition with ammonium or urea medium increased with phosphorus sensitivity indicating that the phosphorus sensitive cultivars are also sentitive to ammonium. The sensitive Clark-63 was inhibited two folds more than the tolerant Lee in ammonium medium. These results strongly suggest that phosphorus sensitivity is closely linked to nitrogen metabolism and ammonium toxicity. Nitrogen sources gave special morphorogical growth patterns (short internode-many branchs in $NO_3-N$, long internode-no branches in $NH_4-N$ and a low top to root ratio in urea) by affecting differently the growth of plant organs.

  • Visible injury appeared 7 days after ultraviolet-B(UV-B) irradiation, but did not show any significant decline of growth in cucumber plant. However the growth of the first leaves of fertilized plants was suppressed by UV-B irradiation. Especially the most effective growth retardiation appeared when supplied with nitrogen rather than phosphate and potassium. These results suggest that UV-B may play an important role in inhibiting nitrogen metabolism. Therefore we examined the effect of activity of nitrate reductase, and found that the nitrate reductase activity of the first leaves was increased by UV-B irradiation for 7 days and fertilization. We examined the effect of plant hormone on the inhibition of growth in the first leaves. Benzyladenine promoted the growth of discs excised from the first leaves by fertilization and without UV-B, but did not promote the growth of leaf discs from UV-B irradiated plants. We conclude that the UV-B-induced decrease in the growth of the first leaves could be related to reduction in sensitivity to plant hormones.

  • This study was carried out on 10 persons of female farmers to determine the energy expenditure of agricultural work. Their mean age was 44 year-old, mean daily urinary nitrogen excretion was 11.3g, and creatinine excretion was 0.183g. The energy metabolism was determined by indirect calorimetry using Douglas bag and Scholander's gas analyzer. The measured basal metabolism was 1,273 kcal per day and rest metabolism was 1,614 kcal per day. To remove seedling from the seedplot, they spent 2.479kcal per minute, to weed 2.805kcal/min, and to reap with sickle 4.58kcal/min. Energy expenditure of the same work, only sitting on the stool, was significantly reduced. Prolonged work did not change energy expenditure per minute significantly.

  • In order to clarify the ecophysiological characteristics of Chenopodiaceae which widely distribute on saline and arid habitats, we collected 10 chenopodiaceous plant species, examined their inorganic and organic solute patterns, and confirmed several common physiological characteristics. In spite of high soil Ca/sup 2+/ contents, chenopodiaceous plants had a little water-soluble Ca within cells, but contained high contents of acid-soluble Ca particularly as a result of Ca-oxalate formation. These plant species also showed accumulation of inorganic ions such as K/sup +/, NO₃/sup -/ and Cl/sup -/, and Na/sup +/especially in saline habitats instead of K/sup +/ Meanwhile, with respect to nitrogen metabolism they retained high N contents in leaves, but showed very low amino acid contents. Additionally, they contained very little proline known to act as a cytoplasmic osmolyte. To ascertain whether this physiological characteristics in the field also can be found under controlled conditions, 7 chenopodiaceous plants (Atriplex gmelini, Corispermum stauntonii, Salicornia herbacea, Suaeda aspayagoides, Suaeda japonica, Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum, C. serotinum) were selected and cultivated under salt treatments. As well as field-grown plants, selected plant species showed similar solute pattern in growth experiment. In summary, the family of Chenopodiaceae represents the following physiological properties; high storage capacity for inorganic ions (especially alkali cations, nitrate and chloride), oxalate synthesis to maintain lower soluble Ca contents within cytoplasm, and low contents of amino acids. In addition to some characteristics mentioned above, the physiological plasticities of Chenopodiaceae which can properly regulate their ion and solute pattern according to soil conditions may enable its representative to grow in dry sand dune and salt marsh habitats.

  • Tobacco plant was grown for 40 days hydroponically in nutrient solutions composed of different forms of nitrogen, like NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N, NH$_4$$^{+}$-N, and a mixed formulation of NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N and NH$_4$$^{+}$-N. Uptake response, nitrate reductase, and glutamine synthetase activity at growth stage were investigated to understand the basic knowledge of nitrogen metabolism. The better growth of shoot and root was observed in the mixed nutrient solution than NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N or NH$_4$$^{+}$-N, alone. The plant growth in NH$_4$$^{+}$-N nutrient solution was poor due to ammonium toxicity. The pH of nutrient solution containing NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N increased up to 40 days after transplanting. But the pH of solution containing NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N decreased drastically to 3.42 at 20 days after transplant. The pH in the mixed formulation dropped to pH 3.64 at 30 days after transplant and showed re-increase. It is assumed that nitrogen of NH$_4$$^{+}$-N form was taken up preferentially at early stage and NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N form was taken up preferentially at middle stage in the treatment with the mixed solution. The result indicates that the relative proportion of nitrogen forms affected the uptake patterns at each growth stages. The contents of chlorophyll and soluble protein were high with the mixed solution. Total nitrogen content was the highest in NH$_4$$^{+}$-N solution and the content also increased by the application of the mixed type of nitrogen. The amount of nitrate in leaves was high in NO$_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N treatment and the amount of ammonium was high in NH$_4$$^{+}$-N treatment. The activity of nitrate reductase or glutamine synthetase was highest in the leaves grown in mixed nutrient solution than in those with any other single of nitrogen form.
