  • The aphid-eating gall-midge, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani), as predator of aphids was wildly used as one of the biological control agents for control of several kinds of aphids. Their some kinds of biological characteristics were examined. The developmental periods of A. aphidimyza from egg to adult with the green peach aphid as prey were 40 and 12 days at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Supplying the cotton aphid as prey, their developmental periods were shorter than with the green peach aphid. In case of the preservation of pupa in the cold condition, emergence rates were over 90% for 1 and 2 weeks at 5$^{\circ}C$ and l0$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Adult females of A. aphidimyza began mating and laying eggs at 2-3 days after emergence, and they laid about 200 eggs for lo days of average life span. Most of adults were emerged from pupa at 6 to 8 pm during a day, and they mainly acted in the early night.

  • Resistance mechanism of organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) in the spiraea aphid, whose populations were originated from several apple orchards where various OPs were frequently sprayed, was investigated. For Wonju population to which insecticides were not sprayed, resistance ratios (BRs) for pirimicarb, phosphamidon, and demeton S-methyl re 49, 31, and 5, respectively. However, for Yesan population to which OPs were sprayed 5 times, RRs for pirimicarb, phosphamidn, and dementon were 830, 536, and 204, respectively. The esterase activities of Wonju and Yesean populations increased by 44.5 and 92.0% compare to that of Kwagju population. R/S a values (S clone Kwangju population; R clone: Iechon opulation) for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition (${I}_{50}$) by pirimicarb and phosphamidon were 299.2 and 186.0, respectively. Our results indicate that increase of esterase activity and reduction of AChE sensitivity seemed to contribute insecticide resistance of the spiraea aphid.

  • To establish the economical and reliable routine bioassay system for developing new insecticidal compounds, effects of leaf-dipping time, application methods, insect species and their developmental stages on susceptibilities of insects to insecticides were studied. The stable insecticidal activity appeared at the dipping time for 30-60 seconds in leaf-dipping method, and the most effective application methods were leaf-dipping method for apterous green peach aphid adults, and third instars of diamond-back moth and tobacco cutworm, whereas seedling+insect spray method for adults or third instars of brown planthoppers. For two-spotted spider mite, leaf-dipping or intact plant spray method was favorable. In the bioassay for chitin synthesis inhibitors, the inoculation of third instars of brown planthopper, diamond-back moth, tobacco cutworm and green peach aphid, and larvae of two-spotted spider mite to the young host plants treated by spray method were adequate bioassay methods.

  • To find out an alternative prey of Orius strigicollis Poppius in the laboratory continuous rearing system, cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), two spotted spider mite (Tetmnychus urticae) and mold mite (Tyrophagus putrescenriae) were tested as alternative prey. Development and oviposition of 0. strigicollis were observed at 25f l0C, RH 60-80% and 16L:8D. Survival rate and developmental period of the nymphal stages of 0. strigicollis was 81. 6% and 11.6 days when fed on cotton aphid, 56.796, 14.6 days, 42.3% and 16.5 days when fed on two spotted spider mite and mold mite, respectively. Total oviposition of 0. strigicollis was 68.5 eggslfemaie fed on cotton aphid, 46.1 and 26.5 eggsifemale fed on two spotted spider mite and mold mite, respectively. Cotton aphid seems to be most suitable prey for rearing 0 . strigicollis among the three prey species tested.

  • Morphological studios on the mouth parts of some aphids belonging to 5 sub-families and on the penetration of stylets into their host plants were carried out in order to find out possible relationship between mouth parts and capability of virus transmission. 1. There were no differences between the aphid species in general morphology of mouth parts. 2. Mouth parts could be observed in detail especially in Toxoptera citricidus and Chaitophorus chinensis. 3. Accessory salivary gland was larger than principal salivary gland in Toxoptera citricidus. 4. In 4 species, e. g. Chaitophorus chinensis, Myzus persicae, Aphis craccivora, Toxoptem citricidus, the stylets were usually inserted in plant tissues intercellularly and reached phloem, however, in Lachnus tropicalis only intracellularly and in Eriosoma clemalis more frequently intracellularly. 5. The stylets tracks of Eriosoma clemalis, Lachnus tropicalis and Myzus persicae were clearly visible but not in Toxoptera citricidus, Chaitophorus chinensis and Aphis craccivora. The tracks were stained with yellowish brown or red brown. 6. Saliva was seceted between the cell walls in most species and some substances in saliva seem to cause loosend cell walls. 7. The penetration of the stylets might cause physiological disturbance to host plants and could make the host plants susceptible to the plant diseases.

  • Korean thistle (Cirsium setidens Nakai), also called Gondre, is an edible perennial herbaceous plant. A new occurrence of aphids has been confirmed on Korean thistle, which is expected to damage crops. The control effect of organic materials was tested to develop an eco-friendly control method for aphid. Pyrethrins+paraffinic oils exhibited a 98% control effect, pyrethrins+matrine+pyroligneous acid showed a 95% control effect, and azadirachtin+rotenone was found to have a 75% control effect. Pyrethrins appear to be the most effective; no damage (phytotoxticity) was caused with organic materials spraying.

  • This research is intended to discover physiological and biochemical defense mechanisms against herbivores of 8 species of the genus Acerby examining the morphological characteristics of the leaf, the structure and number of leaf domatia, herbivores insects and mites feeding on leaves, which were collected from the trees growing in Mt. Chiak, Mt. Cheongtae, Mt. Jungwang, Mt. Bangtae, Mt. Taebaek and Wonju City. This research was conducted from May through July, 2009, and the results are as follows. The domatia of A. pseudosieboldianum, A. pictum subsp. mono and A. mandshuricum belongs to tuft type; that of A. palmatum, A. triflorum and A. tschonoskii pocket+tuft type; and that of A. tegmentosum pocket type. The number of domatia per leaf turned out to be the highest in the case of A. tegmentosum(20.2), and the lowest in the case of A. ginnala (4.2). Leaf surface trichomes of A. palmatum, A. pseudosiebotdianum, A. ginnala and A. mandshuricum are covered with villi; those of A. pictum subsp. mono and A. triflorum with soft, pilose type of hair, and those of A. tschonoskii with stiff, strigose hair. The trichome density of lower leaf surface is found to be higher than that of the upper leaf surface. Only in the case of A. palmatum, A. pseudosieboldianum, A. tegmentosum and A. tschonoskii, a small amount of nectar is found to be secreted from the distal vein parts of the leaf margin. The number of mites on each leaf are found to be significantly different among tree species, and average mites number per leaf was the highest in the case of A. tschonoskii (9.2/leaf), and A. mandshuricum, A. pseudosieboldianum, and A. triflorum follow it in decreasing order. Minute insects attacking the leaf of Acer spp. include Periphyllus californiensis, P. viridis, Psylla spp, and gall mites, and the number of these insects are found in Periphyllus californiensis, Psylla spp, P. viridis, and Cicadellidae sp. in decreasing order. The natural enemies of these herbivores insects are predatory mites, such as Chilocorus rubidus, Coccinella septempunctata and the nymph, Aphidius ervi, Poecilocoris lewisi and its larva, and Poecilocoris lewisi. Lasius japonicus and Formica japonica are symbiotic with aphids, and supports herbivores. Finally, our research confirmed that predatory mites attack Periphyllus californiensis and suck the body fluid of their victim. This proves that mites form a symbiotic relationship with plants through the mediation of leaf domatia. This also indicates that a protective mutualism may be more conspicuous in temperate broad-leaved trees.

  • Neozygites fresenii (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales), aphid-attacking fungus, was found in June 1998 for the first time in Korea. The fungus produces the globose primary conidia with a truncate papillar and two types of the secondary conidiophores and conidia. Resting spores were not found in our specimens, but the fungal structures observed clearly distinguish the fungus from other aphid-attacking fungi, allowing inclusion in the species N. fresenii.
