  • Amplication factor spectrum, using the observed strong ground motions database, has been obtained and compared with Standard Response Spectrum. The observed ground motions from the Miramichi, Nohanni, Sagueray and New Madrid Earthquake (19 vertical components, 36 horizontal components), which are estimated to represent domestic seismotectonic characteristics such as seismic sources, attenuation, and site effect, are used for the analysis of amplification factor spectrum. Amplication factors have been calculated by comparing the observed peak ground motions with results form responses to the observed horizontal and vertical ground motions. The comparison shows that the amplification factors resultant from this study exceed those of Standard Response Spectrum of relatively higher frequencies. The result implles that the characteristics of the seismic strong ground motion, which may represent the domestic seismotectonic characteristics differ from of standard Response Spectrum, especillay of higher frequencies.

  • In general, the response spectrum analysis method is widely used for seismic analysis of building structures, and the time history analysis is applied for computation of structural vibration caused by equipments, machines and moving loads, etc. However, compared with the response spectrum analysis method, the time history method is very complex, difficult and time consuming. In this study, the maximum responses for the vertical vibration are calculated conveniently by the response spectrum method. At first, Response spectrum and time history analysis for some earthquake excitations are carried out, and the accuracy of maximum displacements obtained from response spectrum analysis is investigated. Secondly, the process for the response spectrum analysis in excitation is calculated, and the maximum modal responses are combined by CQC method. Finally, results of the proposed method are compared with those of the time history analysis.

  • This study analysed response spectrum using the observed ground motion from the mine blasting and, then compared the results to the seismic design response spectra applied domestic nuclear power plants. The results showed that the resultant response spectra above 20 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 20 Hz revealed much lower values. These facts suggest that the analysis of response spectrum should be applied to the analysis of impacts to frequency dependent structures in addition to the analysis of peak values of ground motions.

  • The result of recent seismic hazard analysis indicates that the ground motion response spectra for Korean nuclear power plant site have relatively large frequency acceleration contents. In the ordinary seismic fragility analysis of nuclear power plant structures and equipments, the safety margin of design ground response spectrum is directly used as a response spectrum shape factor. The effects of input response spectrum shape on the floor response spectrum were investigated by performing the direct generation of floor response spectrum from the ground response spectrum. The safety margin included in the design ground response spectrum should be considered as a floor response spectrum shape factor for the seismic fragility analysis of the equipments located in a building.

  • In the nonlinear response history analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structural systems. As the properties of the ground motion, using time history analysis, are interrelated with many factors such as the fault mechanism, the seismic wave propagation from source to site, and the amplification characteristics of the soil, it is difficult to properly select the input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the most unfavourable real seismic design ground motions were selected as input motions. The artificial earthquake waves were generated according to these earthquake events. The artificial waves have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake waves, and their overall response spectra are compatible with the seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

  • In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structures. The characteristics of soil and the locality of the site where those ground motions were recorded affect on the contents of earthquake waves. Therefore, it is difficult to select appropriate input ground motions for seismic response analysis. This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the nonlinear response spectra by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. Each simulated earthquake wave has a identical phase angles to the original recorded ground acceleration, and match to design spectra in the range of period from 0.02 to 10.0 seconds. The seismic response analysis is performed to examine the nonlinear response characteristics of SDOF system subjected to the simulated earthquake waves. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the seismic response values of multistory reinforced concrete structures by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past major earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. The input ground motions applied to this study have identical elastic acceleration response spectra, but have different phase angles. The purpose of this study is to investigate their validity as input ground motion for nonlinear seismic response analysis. As expected, the response quantifies by simulated earthquake waves present better stable than those by real recording of ground motion. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves generated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures. It was also found that strength of input ground motions for seismic analysis are suitable to be normalize as elastic acceleration spectra.

  • The characteristics of vertical to horizontal ratio of response spectrum from 20 recent earthquakes were analysed. Response spectrum of 260 horizontal and 130 vertical ground motions were normalized by peak ground acceleration at each resonance frequency from 0.1 to 50Hz. It has been identified that the ratio of vertical to horizontal response spectrum has strong dependancy on epicentral distance and resonance frequency. The ratio of vertical to horizontal response spectrum for the 0-50km epicentral distance group are larger than 2/3 values, which is a standard engineering rule-of-thumb V/H=2/3, at resonance frequency above 7-8Hz. All the 3 groups such as 50-100, 100-150- and 150-200km epicentral distance have shown larger values of vertical to horizontal ratio than 2/3 at resonance frequency above 15Hz and also are larger than 2/3 at resonance frequency below 8-10Hz. Even though there are differences in specific resonance frequency values which depend on the epicentral distance group, we should be careful of seismic design of vertical component of the structures winch are located within the range of about 200km distance. form the potentially seismic causative faults.
