In this study, ti identify the dynamic characteristics of automobile steering system which consists of many components and joints, each component combined structure was analyzed using commercial structural package, ANSYS. And, the finite element method for each component and modeling method of several joints universal joint, bolt joint, bearing, etc. were studied. On the other hand, the experimental modal analysis was performed to compare with the results of the finite element analysis and joint modeling. The result shows very close agreement between two analysis. Also, it was found that the steeing column used in this experiment does not effect the low frequency mode of entire system. In addition, we found that constraint equations need to be considered in modeling universal joint. Since the stiffness effect of Urethane around wheel could be ignored, it can be modeled only with mass effect. In the end, it was found that dynamic characteristics of the entire steerintg system depends mainly upon the wheel characteristics.

Nonlinear models for a thin ring rotating at a constant speed are developed. The geometric nonlinearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton’s principle, the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from the nonlinear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the behavior of the rotating ring.

This paper presents an efficient dynamic modeling method for open cracked rotor-bearing systems. An equivalent bending spring model is introduced to represent the structural weakening effect in the presence of cracks. The proposed modeling method is validated through a series of simulations and experiments. First, the proposed method is rigorously compared with a commercial finite element code. Then, an experiment is performed to validate the proposed modeling method. Finally, a numerical example is introduced to demonstrate the possible application of the proposed method in the crack diagnosis fur rotor systems.

Precise positioning stages are often employed for precise machinery. For the purpose of vibration isolation, these precise positioning stages are mounted on a heavy base structure which is supported by compliant springs. Then the base structure is subjected to residual vibration due to the reactive force and vertical moving load induced by the stage motion. This paper investigates the vibration behavior of a positioning stage base and the associated vibration suppression technique. A dynamic model is developed to investigate the base vibration due to the reactive force and moving load effects by the moving stage. An input shaping technique is also developed to suppress the residual vibrations in base structures. Simulations and experiments show that the developed dynamic model adequately represents the base vibration and that the proposed input shaping technique effectively removes the residual vibrations from the positioning stage base.

It is important to understand the vibrating behavior of plate structures for its many engineering applications. In this study, the vibration characteristics of strip plates that have finite width and infinite length are investigated theoretically and numerically. The waveguide finite element(WFE) approach, which is an effective tool for studying waveguide structures, is used in this study. The WFE method requires only a cross-sectional finite element model, and uses theoretical harmonic solutions to assess wave propagation along the longitudinal direction. First, WFE results for a simple strip plate are compared with the theoretical results(i.e., dispersion diagrams and point mobilities) to validate the numerical model. Then, in the numerical analysis, different numbers of longitudinal stiffeners are included in the plate model to investigate the effects of stiffeners in terms of the dispersion curves and mobilities. Finally, the dispersion curves of a stiffened double plate are obtained to examine the characteristics of its wave propagation.
A hybrid mount featuring rubber element and piezoelectric actuator is devised to reduce vibration when starting a vehicle engine. As a first step, a passive mount adopting rubber element is manufactured and its dynamic characteristics are experimentally evaluated. After evaluating dynamic characteristics of the manufactured inertial piezoelectric actuator, the proposed hybrid mount is then established by integrating the piezoelectric actuator with the rubber element for performance improvement at non-resonant high frequencies. A mathematical model of the established active vibration control system is formulated and expressed in the state space form. Subsequently, sliding mode controller (SMC) is designed to attenuate the vibration transmitted from the base excitation. Finally, control performances of the proposed hybrid mount are evaluated such as transmissibility in frequency domain and time responses.

Accelerometers are widely used to measure the lateral vibrations of pipe-like structures such as a gun tube under impulse loads. Stress waves that precede the lateral vibrations due to the explosion within a gun contribute little to the vibrations, but saturate the accelerometer input. A mechanical filter eliminates this high-frequency stress wave and only transmits the signal corresponding to the lateral vibrations. The mechanical filter consists of a mechanical structure for mounting the accelerometers and a damping material. The low-pass filter characteristics are determined from the equivalent damping and stiffness property of this damping material. In this paper, we tested nine commercially available damping materials for their vibration characteristics by using a test rig. We also observed the change in the vibration characteristics while compressing the material. We designed and manufactured a mechanical filter and verified its filtering performance.
