  • The site effects relating to the amplification of ground motion under earthquake loading are strongly influenced by both the subsurface soil condition and geologic structure. In this study, the site effects at the Hongseong area in Korea were examined by both the site investigation including borehole drilling and in-situ seismic tests and the site visit for acquiring geologic information of ground surface. Subsurface of Hongseong area with a major instrumental earthquake event in 1978 is composed of weathered layers of a maximum of 45 m thickness overlying bedrock. A geotechnical information system based on GIS framework was implemented to effectively find out spatial geologic structure of study area and it indicated Hongseong is a shallow and wide shaped basin. Two-dimensional finite element (FE) analyses for a representative cross-section of the Hongseong area were performed to evaluate seismic site responses. From the results of seismic responses, it was observed that the ground motions were amplified during the propagation of shear waves through the soil layer overlying the bedrock and the duration of shaking near the basin edges was prolonged due to the surface waves generated by interactions of shear waves with basin geometry. Furthermore, one-dimensional FE seismic response analyses were additionally conducted for soil sites selected in the basin, and it gives similar results to the two-dimensional seismic responses at most locations in the basin with the exception of the locations near the basin edges, because the basin in this study is very shallow and wide.

  • Tsunami take away life, wash houses away and bring devastation to social infrastructures such as breakwaters, bridges and ports. The coastal structure targeted object in this study can be damaged mainly by the wave pressure together with foundation ground failure due to scouring and liquefaction. The increase of excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, the bore was generated using the water level difference, its propagation and interaction with a vertical revetment analyzed by applying 2D-NIT(Two-Dimensional Numerical Irregular wave Tank) model, and the dynamic wave pressure acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the vertical revetment estimated by this model. Simulation results were used as input data in a finite element computer program(FLIP) for elasto-plastic seabed response. The time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure ratio, effective stress path, seabed deformation, structure displacement and liquefaction potential in the seabed were estimated. From the results of the analysis, the stability of the vertical revetment was evaluated.

  • When a train enters the tunnel at high speed, the pressure wave occurs. When this pressure wave reaches at the exit of tunnel, some are either emitted to the outside or reflected in tunnel by the form of expansion wave. The wave emitted to the outside forms the impulsive pressure wave. This wave is called 'Micro Pressure Wave'. The micro pressure wave generates noise and vibration around a exit portal of tunnel. When it becomes worse, it causes anxiety for residents and damage to windows. Thus, it requires a counterplan and prediction about the micro pressure wave for high speed railway construction. In this paper, the effects of train head nose and tunnel portal shape were investigated by model test, measurement for the micro pressure wave at the operating tunnel as well as numerical analysis for the gradient of pressure wave in the tunnel. As results, a method for predicting the intensity of the micro pressure wave is suggested and then the intensity of the micro pressure wave is analyzed by the tunnel length and the cross-sectional area.

  • Parameters including the seismic sources and the elastic wave propagation characteristics were analysed using the observed ground motions from 12 Fukuoka region earthquakes. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was applied to invert all the variables non-linearly and simultaneously with S wave energy in fiequency domain. Average stress drop of 12 events and local attenuation parameter $\kappa$ under seismic stations were estimated to about 79.2-bar and 0.043 respectively. Regional attenuation parameter, Qo and ${\eta}$, were also estimated to be about 248.1 and 0.558 respectively. Low value of Qo seems to caused by inhomogeneous tectonic characteristics between Japan island and southern Korean peninsula. $\kappa$ values are much higher than that characterizing EUS (Eastern United States) region, and nearly similar to that of WUS (Western Waited States) region. If the informations on site specific amplification of all the seismic stations are known, $\kappa$ values can be estimated more precisely. All the values including the seismic sources and the site and crustal scale propagation characteristics can be used as seismic design parameters.

  • Prediction of ground condition ahead of tunnel face might be the most important factor to prevent collapse during tunnel excavation. In this study, a non-destructive method to evaluate the phase velocity in model rock mass using wavelet transform of surface wave was proposed aiming at ground condition assessment ahead of tunnel face. Model tests using gypsum as a rocklike material composed of two layers were performed. A Piezoelectric actuator with frequencies ranging from 150 Hz to 5 kHz was selected as a harmonic source. The acceleration history was measured with two accelerometers. Wavelet transform analysis was used to obtain the dispersion curves from the measured data. The experimental results showed that the near-field effects can be neglected if the distance between two receivers is chosen to be three times the wavelength. A simple inversion method using weighted factor based on the normal distribution was proposed. The inversion results showed that the predicted phase velocity agreed reasonably well with the measured one when the wavelength influence factor was 0.2. The depth of propagation of surface wave was from 0.42 to 0.63 times the wavelength. The range of wavelength varying with phase velocity in dispersion curve matched well with that estimated by inversion technique.

  • The South China Sea (SCS) is a typical marginal sea characterized with the deep basin, shelf break, shallow shelf, many straits, and complex bathymetry. This study investigated the tidal characteristics and propagation, and reproduced typhoon-induced storm surge in this region using the regional real-time tide-surge model, which was based on the unstructured grid, resolving in detail the region of interest and forced by tide at the open boundary and by wind and air pressure at the surface. Typhoon Haiyan, which occurred in 2013 and caused great damage in the Philippines, was chosen as a case study to simulate typhoon's impact. Amplitudes and phases of four major constituents were reproduced reasonably in general, and the tidal distributions of four constituents were similar to the previous studies. The modelled tide seemed to be within the acceptable levels, considering it was difficult to reproduce the tide in this region based on the previous studies. The free oscillation experiment results described well the feature of tide that the diurnal tide is prevailing in the SCS. The tidal residual current and total energy dissipation were discussed to understand the tidal and sedimentary environments. The storm-surge caused by typhoon Haiyan was reasonably simulated using this modeling system. This study established the regional real-time barotropic tide/water level prediction system for the South China Sea including the seas around the Philippines through the validation of the model and the understanding of tidal characteristics.

  • Dosimerty based on electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of radiation induced free radicals in amino acids is relevant to biological dosimetry applications. Alanine detectors are without walls and are tissue equivalent. Therefore, alanine ESR dosimetry looks promising for use in the therapy level. The dose range of the alanine/ESR dosimetry system can be extended down to 1 Gy. In water phantom the absorbed dose of electrons generated by a medical linear accelerator of different initial energies $(6\~21MeV)$ and therapeutic dose levels (1~60 Gy) was measured. Furthermore, depth dose measurements carried out with alanine dosimeters were compared with ionization chamber measurements. As the results, the measured absorbed doses for shallow depth of initial electron energies above 15 MeV were higher by$2\~5\%$ than those calculated by nominal energy $C_E$ factors. This seems to be caused by low energy scattered beams generated from the scattering foil and electron cones of beam projecting device in medical linear accelerator.

  • Dual-polarization can distinguish precipitation type and dual-polarization is provide not only meteorological phenomena in the atmosphere but also non-precipitation echoes. Therefore dual-polarization radar can improve radar estimates of rainfall. However polarimetric measurements by transmitting vertically vibration waves and horizontally vibrating waves simultaneously is contain systematic bias of the radar itself. Thus the calibration bias is necessary to improve quantitative precipitation estimation. In this study, the calibration bias of reflectivity (Z) and differential reflectivity ($Z_{DR}$) from the Bislsan dual-polarization radar is calculated using the 2-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) data. And an improvement in rainfall estimation is investigated by applying derived calibration bias. A total of 33 rainfall cases occurring in Daegu from 2011 to 2012 were selected. As a results, the calibration bias of Z is about -0.3 to 5.5 dB, and $Z_{DR}$ is about -0.1 dB to 0.6 dB. In most cases, the Bislsan radar generally observes Z and $Z_{DR}$ variables lower than the simulated variables. Before and after calibration bias, compared estimated rainfall from the dual-polarization radar with AWS rain gauge in Daegu found that the mean bias has fallen by 1.69 to 1.54 mm/hr, and the RMSE has decreased by 2.54 to 1.73 mm/hr. And estimated rainfall comparing to the surface rain gauge as ground truth, rainfall estimation is improved about 7-61%.

  • Linear wireless sensor networks typically construct a network topology with a high reliability through sequential 1:1 mapping among sensor nodes, so that they are used in various surveillance applications of major national infrastructures. Most existing techniques for identifying sensor nodes in those networks are using GPS, AOA, and RSSI mechanisms. However, GPS or AOA based node identification techniques affect the size or production cost of the nodes so that it is not easy to construct practical sensor networks. RSSI based techniques may have a high deviation regrading location identification according to propagation environments and equipment quality so that complexity of error correction algorithm may increase. We propose a timestamps based sequential localization algorithm that uses transmit and receive timestamps in a message between sensor nodes without using GPS, AOA, and RSSI techniques. The algorithms for distance measurement between each node are expected to measure distance within up to 1 meter in case of an crystal oscillator of 300MHz or more.
