  • Predominant explanations of the persistence of sex segregation ill occupations link job choices to profoundly gendered responses to childbearing and other family demands, arguing that women are more likely to seek jobs which are in some sense compatible with motherhood, either because they are family friendly (flexible, low intensity work) or because they are easy to exit and re-enter. In this paper, I examine the effect of occupational sex segregation on job exits into the labor market among women, with a special attention to the role of childbearing and child rearing. I use data from detailed employment histories gathered from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) in continuous time event history models. My results indicate that women in female dominated jobs are less likely to exit their jobs than women in other types of occupations. Further this relationship is not shaped by motherhood. While mothers or pregnant women are more likely to leave work, mothers in female-dominated occupations are slightly less likely to leave employment than mothers in other occupations. These results are not consistent with the ideas that women's choice of female-dominated occupations expresses a gendered identity and women strategically seek jobs which accommodate maternal roles. Taken together, my findings do not provide support to the idea that women choose female-dominated occupations because they are easier to integrate with motherhood (except for the pregnancy period).

  • The object of this study is to determine and prioritize the factors that affect job satisfaction and job continuity intention of an important media content provider group - TV/radio announcers. In this study, the determinant factors are classified as "internal" factors (i.e. career motivation and identity as a member of an organization) and "external" factors such as reputation and prestige. A survey was conducted among active announcers in Korea, and 106 responded. The data was processed by multiple regression analysis. The result showed that organizational identity affected the job satisfaction and job continuity intention most, and perceived external prestige affected least. In conclusion, announcer's job satisfaction and job continuity intention have more meaningful relationship with internal factors than with external factors.

Risk taking level was divided into three items of occupational selection, monetary management and human relation. 450 surveys were distributed to four-year university students in Seoul, capital area and rural area for three weeks from November 26 until December 17, 2011, among which 402 surveys were accepted as effective study subjects. Among items of career self-efficacy, most significant influence on self evaluation was shown in group with high risk taking level in monetary management, and problem solving had most significant influence in groups with high risk taking level in occupational selection and human relation. As a result, occupational information was found to have negative (-) influence on all items of risk taking level, with increasing degree of influence on occupational information for subjects showing lower degree of risk taking level. This study provides detailed analysis on individual's work task called risk taking level based on different occupational types, offering new verification of career self-efficacy as the most fundamental element of occupational exploration to university students looking for employment.

  • The image of scientists that learners have has an important impact on science learning and on science-related career choices. The image of the scientist was mainly analyzed using the drawing analysis method. Drawing analysis has limitations on drawing, mainly analyzing the external image of scientist. Science teachers' images of scientists and their perception of science-related careers are important factors in students' science learning and science-related career choices. However, research on science teachers is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of measurement tools by developing and applying a scientist image measurement tool through the semantic analysis method, and to discuss the educational implications of the research by investigating the image of scientists and science-related professions of secondary pre-service science teachers. The subjects of the study were 79 male and 55 female for a total of 134 students in the 2nd and 3rd grades majoring in science education at a teachers college. The results of the research show that the image measurement tool consisted of four components: 'ability,' 'evaluation,' 'activity,' and 'emotion,' in 24 items. As a result of applying the developed measurement tool to the secondary pre-service science teachers, the image of the 'evaluation,' 'ability,' and 'activity' elements of the scientist were high, but 'emotion' was low. There was no statistically significant difference according to gender. It is found that science-related career perceive them as 'hard,' 'professional,' 'smart,' and 'complex.' In particular, male students perceive themselves as 'hard and difficult' while female students perceive it as 'challenging and complicated'. Finally, we discussed the usefulness of using the image measurement tool of the scientists, the image of the scientists of the secondary pre-service science teachers, and the educational implications on science-related career.
