  • In this paper, a system of falling weight impact tester was built up to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory. Delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the more absorbed energy. Hybrid specimen containing GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.

  • Like composite material. the coil winding pack of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) consist of multiphase element such as metallic jacket material for protecting superconducting cable, vacuum pressurized imprepregnated (VPI) insulation, and corner roving filler. For jacket material, four CS (Central Solenoid) Coils, $5^{th}$ PF (Poloidal Field) Coil, and TF (Toroidal Field Coil) use Incoloy 908 and $6-7^{th}$ PF coil, Cold worked 316LN. In order to analyze the global behavior of large coil support structure with coil winding pack, it is required to replace the winding pack to monolithic matter with the equivalent mechanical properties, i.e. Young's moduli, shear moduli due to constraint of total nodes number and element numbers. In this study, Equivalent Young's moduli, shear moduli, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated for all coil winding pack using Finite Element Method.

  • In recent years, the use of composite structures has become commonplace in various fields such as aerospace, architecture, and civil engineering. In this study, A method is proposed to find optimal position of bolt hole for fastening of composite structure. In the case of composites, stress distribution is very complicated, and design optimization based on this phenomenon increases difficulty. In selecting the optimum position of the bolt hole, the response surface method(rsm), which is a method of optimization, was applied. A response surface was created based on design points by multiple finite element analyzes. The position of the bolt hole that minimizes the stress when bolting on the response surface was found. The distribution of the stress at the position of the optimal hole was much lower than that of the initial design. Based on the results of this study, it is possible to increase the design safety factor of the structure by appropriately selecting the position of the bolt hole according to various load types when designing the structure and civil structure.

  • The demand for electric vehicles has increased because of environmental regulations. The lithium-ion battery, the most widely used type of battery in electric vehicles, is composed of a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. It is manufactured according to the pole plate, assembly, and formation processes. To improve battery performance and increase manufacturing efficiency, the manufacturing process must be optimized. To do so, simulation can be used to reduce wasted resources and time, and a finite-element method can be utilized. For high simulation quality, it is essential to reflect the material properties of the electrode by considering the pores. However, the material properties of electrodes are difficult to derive through measurement. In this study, the representative volume element method, which is a homogenization method, was applied to estimate the representative material properties of the electrode considering the pores. The representative volume element method assumes that the strain energy before and after the conversion into a representative volume is conserved. The method can be converted into one representative property, even when nonhomogeneous materials are mixed in a unit volume. In this study, the material properties of the electrode considering the pores were derived. The results should be helpful in optimizing the electrode manufacturing process and related element technologies.

  • The elastic buckling strength of a corrugated culvert made of orthotropic material such as FRP was evaluated. The height and length of a corrugated wave and the thickness of the culvert were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the culvert. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the buckling strength of the used orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various corrugated culvert models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a corrugated culvert has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the corrugated culverts made of orthotropic material.

  • Rotating annular disks are widely used in data storage devices such as CDs, DVDs(digital versatile disks), and HDs(hard disks). Higher data transfer rate in data storage disks could not be achieved by polycarbonate disks in the present market. The problem can be solved by applying the fiber-reinforce composite materials to the disks. In this paper, an application of composite materials to rotating disks is proposed to increase the critical speed. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating composite by the Galerkin method. The results show that the radially reinforced disk is more effective in increasing critical speed than the circumferentially reinforced disk.

  • This paper concentrates on the analysis of deflection of the reinforced concrete flexural members under monotonic loading. Concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material. The concept of equivalent strain and crack strain are used to establish independent stress-strain relationships in the directions of orthotropy. Steel is modeled as an elstoplastic material, and von Mises failure criterion is applied. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of the deflection of RC flexural members under monotonic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliability of the numerical procedure is demonstrated by the FEM analysis and experiments of the under reinforced concrete beams over the entire loading range up to failure.

  • Finite element numerical analysis was conducted with using the knot data which has a strong influence on the prediction of capacity for the structural wood member. Wood is a orthotropic property unlike other structural materials, so orthotropic property was applied. Knot was modelled as a cylinder shape, cone shape, and cubic shape. Compressive test was carried out to investigate the failure types and to calculate ultimate strengths for the wood members. Numerical model which can reflect the member size, number of knot, location of knot, size of knot was created and analyzed. By the numerical analysis using the ultimate compressive strength, numerical stress distribution types of each specimen was compared to real failure types for the test specimen. Cylinder shape modelling might be most reasonable, according to the necessary time for the analysis, the difficulty of element meshing, and the similarity of stress transfer around knot. Moreover, according to the stress and deformation distribution for the numerical analysis, failures or cracks of real specimen were developed in the vicinity of stress concentrated section and most transformed section. Based on the those results, numerical analysis could be utilized as a useful method to analyze the performance of bending member and tensile member, if only orthotropic property and knot modelling were properly applied.

  • This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory. The absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 6.8J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen; however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. The delamination areas of the impacted specimen were measured with the ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope) through a low-velocity impact test in order to confirm the fracture mechanism.

  • It is difficult for civil engineer to apply composite materials of laminated type to structure for civil construction because of complicated theory although those have much merit. A simple method by which one can predict "exact" values of the natural frequency of vibration of laminated plates is presented. Many laminates with particular orientations have negligible values of $B_{16}$ and $B_{26}$ as the number of plies increases. Such laminates, with $D_{16}$ = $D_{26}$ ->0 can be solved by the same equation as for the special orthotropic laminates(1991,1995). If the quasi-isotrpic constants are used, It is possible to simplify analysis procedure since the equations for isotropic plates can be used. Use of some coefficients can produce "exact" values for laminates with such configuration. This coefficient, in fact, represents the effect of the anisotropy of the laminate. D. H. Kim proposed to use a correction factor, he developed, to produce "exact" solution out of the approximate solution obtained by using the quasi-isotropic constants(1995). In this paper, the fiber orienation studied is [$\alpha$/$\beta$/$\beta$/$\gamma$/$\alpha$/$\alpha$/$\beta$]r, with $\alpha$=-$\beta$, and $\gamma$${\gamma}$=$0^{\circ}$ or $90^{\circ}$ and the above-mentioned method is used to obtain the natural frequencies of plates with such orientations, and detailed result is presented for the use of engineers.nted for the use of engineers.
