We have attempted to give some physical into the factors that control the response of subsurface target to plane wave excitation at VLF (very low frequency) frequencies. Although the VLF technique has some serious disadvantages, such as a lack of penetration depth and limited frequencies, its advantages are also extremely important to have made it by far the most popular electromagnetic technique in current use. In the magnetic-field measurement mode these lightweight, relatively low-priced tools allow us to survey large areas rapidly and inexpensively, to locate and roughly define subsurface electrical conductors. When used in the electric-field mode the technique is, in simple environments, capable of quantitative interpretation and once again the speed and relative cheapness of these devices makes them a natural 'first electromagnetic tool ' to use in reconnaissance mapping.
Streaming potential (SP) arises from fluid flow through effectively connected pores. From this potential, formation water information as well as fluid flow properties can be estimated. As micro particles being located in boundary between subsurface porous media and fluid are charged to form electrical double layer, fluid flow caused by several reasons generates SP, one of electrokinetic phenomena. Occurrence mechanism of SP is complex and signal strength is relatively weak compared to noise. However, application of self potential survey using SP to monitoring of formation fluid is expanding because of its' convenience of exploration without artificial source and repetitiveness of signal. This paper accounts for the occurrence mechanism of SP studied before, including governing equations and analyzes previous various case studies of SP according to the change of physical properties of materials. It helps to increase understanding about SP and also lays the foundations of the application of SP to fields.
This study grafts geophysics on modem archaeology and approaches with scientific and systematic methods to an excavation plan or archaeological study by means of GPR exploration which can assist archaeologists to study Wolseong fortress without excavating it. We investigated the areas in front of Seokbinggo (ice storage facility built of stone) and in the eastern corner of the castle with GPR. As a result, we detected 7 large squared building foundations, stone walls, an entrance for the fortress, many other foundation stones, a road and a garden.

Recently, single channel seismic survey for engineering purpose have been used widely taking advantage of simple processing. However it is very difficult to obtain high fidelity subsurface image by single channel seismic due to insufficient fold coverage. Recently, seismic waveform inversion in multi channel seismic survey is utilized for accurate subsurface imaging even in complex terrains. In this paper, we propose the seismic waveform inversion algorithm for velocity model building using a single channel seismic data. We utilize the Gauss-Newton method and assume that subsurface model is 1-Dimensional. Seismic source estimation technique is used and offset effect is also corrected by removing delay time by offset. Proposed algorithm is verified by applying modified Marmousi2 model, and applied to field data set obtained in port of Busan.

Recently, the frequent occurrence of ground subsidence in urban areas has caused increasing anxiety in residents and incurred significant social costs. Among the causes of ground subsidence, the rupture of old water and sewer pipes not only halts the operation of the buried pipes, but also leads to ground and water pollution problems. However, because most pipes are buried after construction and cannot be seen with the naked eye, the importance of maintenance has underestimated compared to other structures. In recent years, integrated physical exploration has been applied to the maintenance of underground pipes and structures. Currently, to investigate the internal conditions and vulnerable portions of the ground, consolidated physical surveys are executed. Consolidated physical surveys are analysis techniques that obtain various material data and add existing data using multiple physical surveys. Generally, in geotechnical engineering, consolidated physical surveys including electrical and surface wave surveys are adopted. However, it is difficult to investigate time-based changes in under ground using these surveys. In contrast, surveys using cosmic-ray muons have been used to scan the inner parts of nuclear reactors with penetration technology. Surveys using muons enable real-time observation without the influence of vibration or electricity. Such surveys have great potential for available technology because of their ability to investigate density distributions without requiring as much labor. In this paper, survey technologies using cosmic ray muons are introduced, and the possibilities of applying such technologies as new physical survey technologies for underground structures are suggested.
Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic method(EM) has the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There are a lot of available techniques and instruments which have different depth of investigation and resolution depending on the operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. Furthermore, it is very easy to apply on the engineering and environmental problems since modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Even though electromagnetic theory is very complex and not easy to understand, rapid avances in recent computer technology have made it possible to conduct accurate forward modeling and inversion of various EM exploration data. Here, we are going to provide brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.
Groundwater in crystalline basement is controlled primarily by tectonic fractures. It is evident that the delineation of the heavily faulted area and/or fractures deeply developped should be considerable value in deep-seated low enthalphy geothermal water. Electrical and electromagnetic methods have effectively been employed to map hydraulic faults and shear zones for groundwater exploration. In this study VLi; dipoledipole resistivity, controlled source audio~frequency magneto-telluric(CSAMT) and magnetic methods were applied in the Bomun resort area, adjacent to Kyongju city, southeastern part of Korea. The integrated geophysical tools employed in this experiment can be manifested themselves as: 1. Magnetic high for granite intrusions which is more favorable for geothermal gradient increase in depth. 2. VLF cross-over trends for mapping linear shallow conductive fractures and shear zones. 3. Dipole-dipole resistivity distributions for the deep-seated(less than 500m in depth) fractures and shear zones. The dipole-dipole resistivity field data were inverted to the true resistivity distribution with two-dimensional automatic inversion program based on the finite-difference method. 4. CSAMT provides an efficient way of delineating fractures and fault zones if the depth is greater than about 500m.
A complex seismic survey, which is nondestructive inspection, is used often recently in estimating the location of reclaimed cultural assets. Such a method is the best way to estimate the location of cultural assets most effectively in a short time at a construction site. This study estimated the reclamation location of a cultural asset by using magnetic gradient survey, earth resistivity survey, and ground penetrating radar survey (GPR) in order to figure out the distribution territory in the area with possibility of creation of reclaimed cultural assets in the past. As a result, it was located at +15m on the X axis and +90m on the Y axis on the floor plane coordinate of the study target area. It was shown that the major axis is about 20m long in the north-northeast direction and the width is about 5m. The depth of development distribution of anomaly zone was estimated as about 1.5~3.0m. Geophysical survey is expected to be used as a efficient and accurate way to excavate the reclaimed cultural assets in future.
Geophysical survey were investigated in the offshore around East Sea Research Institute, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (Jukbyeon-myun, Uljin-gu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea). The surveys were conducted aboard the R/V Jangmok in 2008 using a hull-mounted EM 3002 multi-beam echosounder. Precise bathymetry and seabed images were obtained using multi-beam and thicknesses of sedimentary layer were found through seismic survey. Submarine topography deepens parallel to the coastline to -60 m and rock mass distributed in the southeast of study area. By finding the thickness of sedimentary layer through seismic survey, a sedimentary thickness on the study area was established. Futhermore, monitoring data of bathymetry, substructure and sedimentary environment will be secured through successive geophysical investigation.
