  • Hyporheic zone, where groundwater-stream water mixing occurs, sensitively responds to heat of groundwater and stream water temperature. Variation of stream water temperature has short time period and time dependent, because stream water temperature is influenced by daily fluctuation and seasonal air temperature. On the other hand, groundwater temperature is insignificant. In this study, we conducted 1-dimensional heat transfer analysis. The results show that there are differences of temperature distribution between gaining stream and losing stream with flux in hyporheic zone. Especially, variations of hyporheic water temperature show a significant difference in adjacent streambed, Also, the results shows that distribution of temperature was more affected by groundwater direction than intensity of flux.

  • Because the satellite imagery can detect the radiative heat from the surface using the thermal IR (TIR) channel, there have been many efforts to verify the relationship between the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat island. However, the relationship between geomorphological characteristics like surface aspects and LST is relatively less studied. Therefore, the geomorphological elements, for example, surface aspects and surface slopes, are considered to evaluate their effects on the change of the surface temperature distribution using the Landsat 7 ETM+ TIR channel and the possibility of the image to detect anthropogenic heat from the surface. We found that the surface aspect is ignorable but the surface slope with the sun elevation influences on the surface temperature distribution. Also, the radiative heat from the surface to the atmosphere could not be accurately recorded by the satellite image due to the surface slope but the slope correction process used in this study could correct the surface temperature under slope condition and the slope correction, in fact, was not influenced on the average temperature of the surface. The possibility of the anthropogenic heat detection from the surface from the satellite imagery was verified as well.

  • In this study, the series of Landsat TM/ETM+ images was acquired to extract land surface temperature for wide-area and executed geometric correction and radiometric correction. And the land surface temperature was extracted using NASA Model, and achieved the first correction by performing land coverage category for study area and applied characteristic emission rate. Land surface temperature which was acquired by the first correction was analyzed in correlation with Meteorological Administration's temperature data by regression analysis, and established correction formula. And I wished to improve accuracy of land surface temperature extraction using satellite image by second correcting deviations between two data using establishing correction formula. As a result, land surface temperature acquired by 1st and 2st correction could be corrected in mean deviation of about ${\pm}3.0^{\circ}C$ with Meteorological Administration data. Also, I could acquire land surface temperature about study area by higher accuracy by applying to other Landsat images for re-verification of study results.

  • The mesoscale atmospheric models to produce surface temperature can not generally consider the effect of the sloped terrain for direct solar radiation. These have not showed the regional difference of solar radiation and as a result, have made the big error in the local surface temperature. Therefore, we wished to represent the exact locality of surface temperature by considering the geometric properties of surface as well as the vegetated properties of surface. The purpose of the study is to produce local surface ground temperature in sloped terrain diagnostically using surface Energy Balance Model (EBM) with the use of GRID model in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this study, surface inhomogeneity over southeastern part of Korean peninsula are considered in estimation of the absorbed surface solar radiation in terms of the illumination angle, depending on topographical aspect and slope in GRID. Also, the properties of vegetated surface which the major components for the variability of surface temperature are considered in terms of NDVI. The results of our study show the locally changes in the surface ground temperature due to local ground aspect and slope effect and local properties of vegetated surface. The more detailed distribution of local surface temperature may drive the local circulation at lower atmospheric and it may explain better the real local circulation.

  • This research examined the validity of whether the PMV index-based comfort- or uncomfort-indoor environments could be classified by the facial skin temperature, one of the physiological indicator for human. To do this, we distinguished between a comfort thermal environment and an uncomfort thermal environment using the PMV value, and then facial skin temperatures were measured in both environments. As a result, the facial skin temperature of occupants were different between the comfort- and uncomfort-indoor environments. It suggested that the facial skin temperature could be used in shaping the comfortable indoor environment based on the PMV index. While this result suggested the PMV index-based on comfort and uncomfort indoor environments could not be valid, because the facial skin temperature was lower in the uncomfort thermal environment than in the comfort thermal environment.

  • The primary purpose of this paper is to prove a clear relationship among land use type, vegetation level and surface temperature. For this purpose, this paper presents series of spatial distribution maps of the three features obtained through the visual interpretation of digital images. The result of study tells us that the spatial distribution of the vegetation level is very similar with that of surface temperature. By analyzing the relationship between surface temperature and land use types, this study categorizes the eighteen urban land uses into 7-8 groups according to their average surface temperature. The Duncan test was conducted to categorize the land uses. The surface temperature of manufacturing related land use is the highest, semi-residential use is the next, non-residential land use is the next to the lowest, and the agricultural and forest land use is the lowest. This paper provides another strong evidence of the relationship by showing the regression result.

  • Difficulties of emissivity determination and atmospheric correction degrade the estimation accuracy of land surface temperature (LST). That is, since the emissivity determination of land surface material and the correction of atmospheric effect are not perfect, it is very difficult to estimate the precise LST from a thermal infrared image such as Landsat TM and ETM+, ASTER, etc. In this study, we propose an efficient method to estimate land surface temperature difference (LSTD) rather than LST from Landsat thermal band images. This method is based on the assumptions that 1) atmospheric effects are same over a image and 2) the emissivity of vegetation region is 0.99. To validate the performance of the proposed method, error sensitive analysis according to error variations of reference land surface temperature and the water vapor is performed. The results show that the estimated LSTD have respectively the errors of ${\pm}0.06K$, ${\pm}0.15K$ and ${\pm}0.30K$ when the water vapor error of ${\pm}0.302g/cm^2$ and the radiance differences of 0.2, 0.5 and $1.0Wm^{-2}sr^{-1}{\mu}m$ are considered. And also the errors of the LSTD estimation are respectively ${\pm}0.037K$, ${\pm}0.089K$, ${\pm}0.168K$ in the reference land surface temperature error of ${\pm}2.41K$. Therefore, the proposed method enables to estimate the LSTD with the accuracy of less than 0.5K.

  • We examined the interactions between surface and groundwater through (1) flowmeter logging, (2) measurements of seasonal and vertical changes in temperature within a well, and (3) geochemical analyses of water samples from nine groundwater-monitoring wells. At two wells adjacent to a stream, subsurface water was found to flow from the stream to a surrounding alluvial fan, and the seasonal change in groundwater temperature is similar to those of surface water and air. Geochemical analyses at two wells indicated hydro-geochemical features affected by streamwater inflow, showing seasonal variations. Accordingly, these two wells are located in an area with active interaction between surface water and groundwater. The Thermochron I-button used in the present study is useful for this type of study of groundwater?surface water interaction because of its low cost and small size.
