  • This study aimed to estimate the economic impact of the '2011 Seoul Motor Show' using a direct survey-based regional input-output(I-O) model. Based on the regional I-O table, Exhibition multipliers were derived with respect to output, income, employment, value-added and indirect tax. Attendees' survey was conducted to estimate per capita expenditure. The results of this study indicated that all attendees of '2011 Seoul Motor Show' generated 53.1 billion Won of output impact, 11.7 billion Won of income impact, 24.1 billion Won of Value-added impact, 2.6 billion Won of tax impact, and 1,030 part-time and full-time jobs throughout direct and indirect effects. Another result of this study was that output multiplier of the exhibition industry was similar with other industries, however, income, employment and value-added multipliers were relatively larger than those of other industries.

  • This report gave analysis of food demand both in Korea and Japan through introducing the concept of cohort analysis to the conventional demand model. This research was done to clarify the factors which determine food demand of the household. The traits of the new model for demand analysis are to consider and quantify those effects on food demand not only of economic factors such as expenditure and price but also of non-economic factors such as the age and birth cohort of the householder. The results of the analysis can be summarized as follows: 1) The comparison of the item-wise elasticities of food demand demonstrates that the expenditure elasticity is higher in Korea than in Japan and that the expenditure elasticity is -0.1 for cereal and more than 1 for eating-out in both countries. In respect to price elasticity, the absolute values of all the items except alcohol and cooked food are higher in the Korea than in Japan, and especially the price elasticities of beverages, dairy products and fruit are predominantly higher in Japan. In this way, both expenditure and price elasticities of a large number of items are higher in Korea than in Japan, which may be explained from the fact that the level of expenditure is higher in Japan than in Korea. 2) In both of Korea and Japan, as the householder grows older, the expenditure for each item increases and the composition of expenditure changes in such a way that these moves may be regarded as due to the age effect. However, there are both similarities and differences in the details of such moves between Korea and Japan. Those two countries have this trait in common that the young age groups of the householder spend more on dairy products and middle age groups spend more on cake than other age groups. In the Korea, however, there can be seen a certain trend that higher age groups spend more on a large number of items, reflecting the fact that there are more two-generation families in higher age groups. Japan differs from Korea in that expenditure in Japan is diversified, depending upon the age group. For example, in Japan, middle age groups spend more on cake, cereal, high-caloric food like meat and eating-out while older age groups spend more for Japanese-style food like fish/shellfish and vegetable/seaweed, and cooked food. 3) The effect of the birth cohort effect was also demonstrated. The birth cohort effect was introduced under the supposition that the food circumstances under which the householder was born and brought up would determine the current expenditure. Thus, the following was made clear: older generations in both countries placed more emphasis upon stable food in their composition of food consumption; the share of livestock products, oil/fats and externalized food was higher in the food composition of younger generation; differences in food composition among generations were extremely large in Korea while they were relatively small in Japan; and Westernization and externalization of diet made rapid increases simultaneously with generation changes in Korea while they made any gradual increases in Japan during the same time period. 4) The four major factors which impact the long-term change of food demand of the household are expenditure, price, the age of the householder, and the birth cohort of the householder. Investigations were made as to which factor had the largest impact. As a result, it was found that the price effect was the smallest in both countries, and that the relative importance of the factor-by-factor effects differed among the two countries: in Korea the expenditure effect was greater than the effects of age and birth cohort while in Japan the effects of non-economic factors such as the age and birth cohort of householder were greater than those of economic factors such as expenditures.

  • Using Korea Education Longitudinal Study and administrative school data, this paper analyzes school characteristics that influence the demand for private education. Among other findings, it should be noted that private education expenditure tends to be decreased when student evaluation of teacher effectiveness is high, the average education level of teachers is high, and individualized education is offered through subject-based classroom. These results suggest that the demand for private education could be dropped by a better quality and high effort of teachers, which would be attained through an improved education system for teaching profession and student-oriented teacher evaluation. In addition, ability grouping within school via subject-based classrooms with different levels appears to be helpful to overcome uniformity of school equalization system without inducing an increasing demand for private education.

  • This article analyzed economic effects of changes in spatial accessibility on regional touruism expenditure structure resulting from highway investments on Gangwon province, Korea. The Seemingly Unrelated Regress(SUR) model is applied to analyze the structure of change in tourism expenditure of Gangwon Province, and the competition and complementary relationship of tourist demand were analyzed among 18 counties in Gangwon by Dendrinos-Sonis method. The spatial accessibility has a significant effect on the increase in amount of tourist expenditure, but by 1% increase in the accessibility resulted in a reduction of length of stay -0.18% and travel costs -0.34% by respectively. The most powerful variable for improving the on-site economy is the tourist service establishment, which increases one unit, the amount of tourist expenditure increased by 3.6%. Moreover, the competition and supplemental relationship of tourism demands in Gangwon was decided by the conditions under which traffic flow with passing occurred, such as inland or ocean-typed travel attractions, adjacent or remote regions to the highway. The limitations of this study were not able to use raw data of tourism expenditures before and after the opening the highway due to the restriction of priority data, and further research on the appropriate level of spatial accessibility for the regional economy is needed.

  • In this study, using the raw data of the 7th Food Consumption Behavior Survey(2019), compare and analyze what factors affect the food delivery service and take-out food expenditure of single-person and multi-person households. It was found that women(especially women in single-person households), have a high tendency to pursue safety preference versus price. In the future, Korea's population structure is expected to steadily increase single-person household and elderly households, and women's participation in economic activities is expected to continue to increase. In addition, the food delivery market has more than doubled compared to the previous year in 12 cities and provinces out of 17 cities and provinces nationwide with Covid-19, especially in the non-capital area, making it has become a universal service nationwide. Therefore, the growing home meal replacement market needs marketing strategies to secure and emphasize food safety.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze expenditure structures and impact factors of household's transportation cost in order to provide policy-maker with quantitative and economic information for reducing household's transportation costs, using 1995-2007 household survey data. For this purpose, this study performed various economic analysis, including econometric regression analysis and income re-distributional effects. The four models were separately estimated with dependent variable (personal and public costs, public transit and private car costs) and independent variables (family, employ, age, education, cars, household income, region dummy variable). In addition, We analyzes impacts of transport policy instruments on the transportation expenditure. These instruments include changes of oil price and public transit fare, reform of public transport system, and extension of subway facilities. Finally, income re-distributional effects before and after transportation expenditure, using Pechman-Okner (PO) index and Wolfson index.

  • This paper investigates the performance of technology innovation activities performed by firms in 16 major regions in Korea using 2002-2010 survey data by STEPI. The theoretical and empirical analysis is carried out via the 2 models which are the simple R&D - total revenue model and Cobb-Douglas model based on the simple model adding labor variable. The main results shows that for simple model, the R&D elasticity for total revenue is 0.42 for all areas and Ul-San shows the highest elasticity level, 0.66 and Bu-San the lowest level, 0.2. In case of Cobb Douglas model the R&D elasticities are not statistically significant for many regions. To overcome the low statistical significance, we grouped the 15 regions for 3 wider regions using ANOVA based on the R&D intensity for the homogeneity of R&D activities. By grouping, each region has more observations to analyze and the results from the empirical analysis shows higher statistical significance level and data explanation capability. In this case, Group 3 which shows larger firm size and slightly higher export share shows the highest level of R&D elasticity, 0.088 and Group 1 which has the smallest firm size and the lowest revenue growth rate shows the lowest level, 0.31. For the labor elasticity, Group 1 shows the higest level, 1.16 and Group2 the lowest level, 1.096. These results show that the regions which have many middle and small firms reveal low R&D-revenue elasticity and high labor-revenue elasticity.
