  • Due to the revitalization of urban development, the number of cases of excavating tunnels adjacent to existing subways is increasing. This may affect the structure and track of the existing subway, resulting in reduced stability and usability. In this study, we verified the adequacy of the proximity evaluation range to ensure the stability of new tunnels and existing subways when excavating adjacent to tunnels, and proposed a quantitative correction rate considering various conditions. Conditions for applying the correction rate considered rock grade, geologically weak section, structurally weak section, and structural deterioration section. It is hoped that a more accurate proximity evaluation will be performed by applying a quantitative correction rate that considers rock and geological conditions, structure status, etc. to the proximity evaluation standard.

  • In this study, the subsidence behavior caused by groundwater ex-flow in a limestone cavity encountered during tunnel excavation was quantified based on numerical analysis and the effect was analyzed. Based on the groundwater level and surface subsidence surveyed at the site, a numerical analysis technique was applied to analyze the characteristics of the subsidence behavior according to the tunnel passage of the geological vulnerabilities. The results of groundwater seepage-coupled analysis were analyzed to reflect the actual ground subsidence behavior. As a result of the study, it was analyzed that the ground subsidence due to the tunnel excavation in the limestone common section(the geological vulnerable zone) was analyzed that the dramatical decrease in groundwater level was the main cause. As a result of numerical analysis, it was analyzed that the long-term cumulative settlement of the asphalt surface after the groundwater ex-flow was 76~118mm due to the reduction of the volume of the soil layer due to the decrease in the groundwater level, and the settlement amount increased as the depth of the soil layer increased.

  • The section of this study is the geological vulnerable zone where groundwater leakage occurred through the tunnel barrier during excavation of the shield tunnel boring machine(TBM) for the construction of the electric power unit. Therefore, a Three D imensions(3D) numerical analysis was performed to analyze the actual situation from before construction to the time when the change in groundwater level occurred, and to reflect the surrounding ground conditions based on the observed change in groundwater level during construction. As a result of the study, the correlation between groundwater level change and tunnel construction around the site was identified. Therefore, it was similar to the measurement result of groundwater level at the target ground. The amount of groundwater discharge to the entrance of the tunnel construction was also similar to the actual measured result, and the numerical analysis method and modeling in this study were analyzed to reflect the site conditions.

  • Specific survey objectives often cannot be met using only one geophysical method, as each method's results are influenced by the specific physical properties of subsurface materials. In particular, areas susceptible to geological hazards require investigation using more than one method in order to reduce risks to life and property. Instead of analyzing the results from each method separately, this work develops a four-quadrant criterion for classifying areas of levees as safe or weak. The assessment is based on statistically determined thresholds of seismic velocity (P-wave velocity from seismic refraction and S-wave velocity from multichannel analysis of surface waves) and electrical resistivity. Thresholds are determined by subtracting the standard deviation from the mean during performance testing of this correlation technique applied to model data of four horizontal and inclined fracture zones. Compared with results from the crossplot of resistivity and P-wave velocity, crossplot analysis using resistivity and S-wave velocity data provides more reliable information on the soil type, ground stiffness, and lithological characteristics of the levee system. A loose and sandy zone (represented by low S-wave velocity and high resistivity) falling within the second quadrant is interpreted to be a weak zone. This interpretation is well supported by the N values from standard penetrating test for the central core.

  • Rockfall failure at the access road to Seokguram were occurred due to the earthquake on September 12, 2016. A detailed investigation was carried out in order to find out the cause of the rockfall, to identify the risk of the entire sites, and to prepare proper countermeasure methods and mitigation. We checked for geological and topographical characteristics of overall slopes alongside the access road to Seokguram and made a face map. In addition, we analyzed topographical factors caused by the earthquake through calculating a degree of slope, degree of bearing, upslope contributing area, and wetness index with the use of shading relief map. As a result, we confirmed that the large rockfall occurred with a weak section. In this study, we also evaluated the overall slope stability of the entire access road to Seokguram in order to classify it into danger and caution zones depending on the risk of collapse.

  • Various methods, such as geophysical exploration, temperature measurement, and fiber optics, have been developed for detecting the seepage at a dam. In this study, in order to investigate the possibility of leakage detection using dielectric constant of FDR sensor, a physical model consisting of weak and no-weak zones is fabricated and the sensors for dielectric constant, temperature and pore water pressure measurements are installed. As a leakage happens, the dielectric constant changes more rapidly through a weak zone than no-weak zone. In addition, comparing three factors (dielectric constant, temperature, and pore water pressure), the response of dielectric constant to seepage is fast and it is easily recognized even at the end measurement point. Considering these features, it is concluded that it could be possible to cope with the leakage detection quickly and efficiently if the dielectric constant is measured at the downstream slope of a dam.

  • Monitoring technology based on electrical resistivity is widely used for non-destructive data collection and health analysis of underground structures and tunnels. Vulnerable sections such as fault zone generates many problems during construction of the tunnel. These problems cause displacement and stress changes of the ground. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the state of the fault zone section to ensure the mechanical stability of the underground structure. Monitoring the size of joints and the porosity of the fillings is essential for rocks. Previous studies have not considered the variety of fillings in rock joints. In this study, electrical resistivity tests were conducted according to the particle mixing state of the sandy fillings. When the size of fillings is decreased at the constant porosity, the electrical resistivity tends to increase. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic electrical resistivity data for predicting the ground conditions and evaluation of the ground behavior that is containing sandy fillings in the rock joint for tunnels.

  • Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan, has an extensive alpine region due to the topographic feature of lava plateau, and exhibits the surface geology largely composed of pyroclastic materials. In addition, the peak season of mountain climbing in the park coincides with a snow-melting period, resulting in severe soil erosion along hiking trails generated by human trampling, snow-melting water and pipkrake. Trail section has been particularly enlarged because the snow-melting water scours a trail surface and the pipkrake erodes sidewalls of a trapezoid-shaped trail. The scoured tread also forces hikers to walk out of a trail, and then frequently brings about path divergence as well as path widening. The soil particles, which are produced by erosional processes in a slope reach, flow downward, and cause the secondary trail degradation by covering a tread in a flat reach and nearby grassland.
