Packer-dilatometer techniques, which are borehole-dilatometer techniques using commercial rubber packer, were developed to measure the deformability of rocks. Packer-dilatometers for 0.5 inch, AX, BX, NX and HX size boreholes were developed and were used for rock deformability measurements in the field. In the packer-dilatometer method, the packer pressurizes the borehole-wall and the borehole deformation is determined by the amount of fluid injected into the packer. A detailed description of the theoretical development of quantitative interpretation of the packer-dilatometer method; apparatus, setup and procedures for the determining of calibration constants; contact pressure determination and field tests using the packer-dilatometer are provided.
Fluid inclusion has been widely used to study the origin and physiochemical conditions of ore deposits. However, it is difficult to get the accurate physiochemical data from fluid inclusion study due to the error of microthermometric data and the complexity of calculation of density and isochore of fluid inclusion. The computer programs HALWAT, $CO_2$, and CHNACL written by Nicholls and Crowford (1985) partly contributed to improve the accuracy of physiochemical data by using complicated equations. These programs are applied to determine the densities and isochores of fluid inclusions for the Cretaceous Keumhak mine using Choi and So's data (1992) and for the Jurassic Samhwanghak mine using Yun's data (1990). The estimated PoT for Keumhak mine from calculated isochores of coexisting fluid inclusions are $230^{\circ}{\sim}290^{\circ}C$ and 500~800 bar which matche well to the poT estimated by Choi and So ($280^{\circ}{\sim}360^{\circ}C$ and 500~800 bar, 1992). However, the poT for Samwhanghak mine estimated in this study by combining the calculated isochores and sulfur isotope geothermometer data by Yun (1990) are about 4~7 kb at $329{\pm}50^{\circ}{\sim}344{\pm}55^{\circ}C$ which are quite different form the P-T estimates by Yun ($255^{\circ}{\sim}294^{\circ}C$ and 1.2~1.9kb, 1990). This discrepancy caused by misinterpretation of homogenization temperature (Th) of fluid inclusion and by application of inappropriate isochores. The application of homogenization temperature and/or inappropriately selected isochore to determine the trapping PoT condition of ore-deposits should be avoided, particularly for ore-deposits formed at pressures higher than 1~2 kb.
A Siemens SemiQuant (SSQ) 3000 program, a precalibrated 'standardless' analytical program handling up to 90 elements, was evaluated for the fast analysis of various types of reference materials using a wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Various types of standard reference materials such as metal discs, metal chips, and geological materials in powder form were analysed and it took 23 minutes of measuring time for 75 elements. Measurements of geological reference materials using different sampling methods were carried out and their data were interactively evaluated. The analysis of materials of a known matrix concentration such as stainless steels provided higher precision value compared to totally unknown samples. The analyses of materials prepared as pressed pellets or fused glass beads provided higher precision values compared to the measurement of loose powders with a foil on the sample surface and helium operation, though their sampling procedures were more complicate and took more time. Since very light elements such as boron, carbon, and oxygen have a strong influence on the matrix effects and also on the calculation of effective matrix corrections, the rhodium Compton check was applied to verify the reliability of the defined light element concentrations of light matrix materials and the defined major sample compounds. Failure of defining correct matrix resulted in an unoptimized matrix correction and therefore in the wrong calculation of the element concentration.
The rocks exposed in the investigation area are andesite of Late Cretaceous age, and syenite and aplitic granite of Bulgugsa Series of Early Cretaceous Period, which is intruded in the older andesitic rock. The strike and dip of major joint is $N10^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}E$, and $70^{\circ}SE$ to vertical respectively. According to seismic exploration, lower velocity zone, deemed to be fractured and/or crushed zone, is appeared along the gully center of east flank of the area. Test drilling shows that andesite bedrock is mostly very hard, massive, and very fine to medium grained and has almost 100 percent RQD and core recovery. In comparision with andesitic bedrock, intruded syenite cores show that it is highly crush especially at the depth from 55m to 63m.
This paper intended to assess the hydro-structure characteristics of volcanic rocks based on the hydrogeological data obtained from the underground storage cavern during construction. The variation of groundwater levels was periodically measured from the 28 surface monitoring holes(NX size) and the hydraulic pressures and injection rates were daily monitored from the water curtain holes(95 horizontal holes and 63 vertical holes). The hydraulic interference tests were performed in whole water curtain holes. The distribution patterns of hydraulic pressure are closely related to the dip angles of fracture intersected to the water curtain holes. Three domains can be grouped by the distribution of hydraulic pressures in the horizontal water curtain holes. The initial hydraulic pressures measured immediately after drilling of water crutain holes are high in ascending order of the cavern C-2, C-1, and C-3. The priliminary hydrochemical data also indicate that the portions of the deep groundwater composition is relatively great in the cavern C-3 area. Some of the horizontal water curtain holes in the cavern C-3 show a steady higher groundwater pressure with the composition of shallow groundwater indicating the outer boundary as constant hydraulic boundary. The water curtain holes in the cavern C-2 is characterized as low initial hydraulic pressure and less injection rates, suggesting poor hydraulic connectivity to a shallow groundwater system. The results of the study can help to understand a hydraulic compartment concept in a fracture hydro-geology and be utilized during the surface investigation for a groundwater system.

Risk management is essential for preventing accidents arising from uncertainties in TBM tunnel projects, especially concerning managing the risk of TBM tunnel collapse, which can cause extensive damage from the tunnel face to the ground surface. In addition, prioritizing risks is necessary to allocate resources efficiently within time and cost constraints. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a TBM risk database through case studies of TBM accidents and determine a risk priority for TBM tunnel collapse using the Bayes theorem. The database consisted of 87 cases, dealing with three accidents and five geological sources. Applying the Bayes theorem to the database, it was found that fault zones and weak ground significantly increased the probability of tunnel collapse, while the other sources showed low correlations with collapse. Therefore, the risk priority for TBM tunnel collapse, considering geological sources, is as follows: 1) Fault zone, 2) Weak ground, 3) Mixed ground, 4) High in-situ stress, and 5) Expansive ground. In practice, the derived risk priority can serve as a valuable reference for risk management, enhancing the safety and efficiency of TBM construction. It provides guidance for developing appropriate countermeasure plans and allocating resources effectively to mitigate the risk of TBM tunnel collapse.
This study were subjected to accelerated weathering test under freeze-thaw and pressure conditions to observe initiation and propagation of cracks using CLSM. Applied stress was set at 50 MPa, 55 MPa, 70 MPa for 3 samples each by using compressor and freeze-thaw experiment was conducted while samples maintained that condition. In freeze-thaw experiments, a temperature range was set to -20~40℃ which was 1 cycle for 6 hours. The freeze-thaw cycle was composed of time which reached to set temperature for 1 hour and holding time for 2 hours. On the basis of this cycle, surface of samples was observed by CLSM after each 20 freeze-thaw cycle. From this research, according to increase freeze-thaw cycle, there were 7, 10, 19 each cracks and High pressured sample's accumulate length was longer than low pressured sample's. High pressured sample's crack velocities were also faster than low pressured sample's which were calculated by accumulate length and freeze-thaw cycle.
We conducted hydraulic fracturing experiments on cement samples to investigate the dependency of fracture propagation on the viscosity of injection fluid and the in situ stress state. Ten cubic samples (20 cm side length) were produced using cement that was cured in water for more than one month. Samples were placed in a tri-axial compression apparatus with three independent principal stresses. An injection hole was drilled and the sample was hydraulically fractured under a constant injection rate. We measured injection pressures and acoustic emissions (AE) during the experiments, and investigated the fracture patterns produced by hydraulic fracturing. Breakdown pressures increased exponentially with increasing viscosity of the injection fluid. Fracture patterns were dependent on differential stress (i.e., the difference between the major and minor principal stresses). At low differential stress, multiple fractures oriented sub-parallel to the major principal stress axis propagated from the injection hole, and in some samples the fracture orientation changed during propagation. However, at high differential stress, a single fracture propagated parallel to the major principal stress axis. AE results show similar patterns. At low differential stress, AE source locations were more widespread than at high differential stress, consistent with the fracture pattern results. Our study suggests that hydraulic fracturing during shale gas extraction should be performed parallel to the orientation of minimum differential stress.
This case study is about the sampling and interpretation of soil pore water in order to understand and to predict the diffusion and behavior of soil pollution. For the measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in two representative hydrocarbon-contaminated sites, the extraction system of the soil pore water was set up with respect to soil depths and the behavior of contaminants was interpreted. The soil solution extraction system consisted of peristaltic pump, and extraction and sampling compartment, and can measure simultaneously the soil water pressure. The concentration of PAHs with respect to extraction pressure and time decreased due to dilution through soil pore water. Particularly, the concentration of PAHs was more reduced under the unsaturated oxic condition than saturated anoxic condition. Therefore, the soil solution extraction with respect to soil water pressure can interpret the extent of equilibrium between porewater and soil surface.
The permeability coefficients were calculated by the homogenization analysis method with sufficient consideration of fracture geometry dependent on aperture change. According to the results of aperture measurements using a confocal laser scanning microscope, apertures on each measuring point display different magnitudes, indicating that fracture walls can not be assumed as parallel feature. After construction of fracture model based on the aperture values measured on each pressure level, the homogenization analysis was conducted to compute permeability coefficients. The calculated permeability coefficients distribute in the ranges of $10^{-1}~10^{-3}cm/sec$. Most of the specimens show decreasing permeability coefficients with the increase of the applied pressure. However, the decreasing rates of permeability coefficients do not show a constant trend on each pressure level. This phenomenon is well matched to the observation results of Chae et al. (2003). It proves that aperture change strongly influences on permeability characteristics. Three sections of each specimen have all different values of permeability coefficient. It suggests that the variation of permeability coefficient depends sensitively on aperture magnitudes and characteristics of fracture geometry. It is very important to consider accurate fracture geometries for analysis of permeability characteristics in rock fractures bearing different aperture distribution. Therefore, it needs to consider sufficiently the fracture geometries for calculating the permeability coefficients of fractures.
