  • For the development of areas around railway lines, subsurface construction using the non-open cut method under the railway has recently been increased. However, when a structure under a railway is constructed, the stress release of the ground is not considered an important factor in the design. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to determine a zone of stress relaxation. Field tests using an inclinometer were performed to measure the horizontal displacement of the ground during non-open cut construction. The stress release zone and the subgrade stiffness were investigated by numerical analysis. The results of the laboratory tests indicated that the failure zone in the ground was similar to a Rankine's active earth pressure zone. The measured data from the inclinometer in the field tests showed that displacements started when a steel pipe was pushed into the ground. The results of numerical analysis show that lateral earth pressure was also close to Rankine's active earth pressure. The roadbed support stiffness of the soil around the structure decreased to 40% of the original value. The ground around the subsurface structure constructed using nonopen cut methods should be reinforced to maintain the running stability of train.

  • Underground structures, such as compacted sand piles applied as soft ground countermeasures, are analyzed for settlement and stability by the composite ground design method. The basic principle of the composite ground design method is the arching effect. The reinforcing effect of the pile is evaluated as the stress-distribution ratio. When applying grouting piles with elastic properties using the ground reinforcement method, the existing stress-distribution ratio was only considered when the pile was installed. This study shows that the method of applying the stress-distribution ratio applied in previous studies should be changed when the ground reinforcement pile is installed at an arbitrary location in the ground without raising it to the ground surface. When high strength jet routing is applied, the stress-distribution ratio (n) to the in-situ ground generally ranges from 30 to 50. However, if the pile is located far from the surface and the depth goes down to the boundary depth of the stress sphere, the stress-distribution effect rapidly decreases, and the stress-distribution ratio converges to 1.5.

  • The design of high strength underground septic tank stiffened by steel pipe is presented and the ultimate behavior is investigated according to the full scale experiments for three types of specimens. The limitation of the current design specification are pointed out and the general design procedure of private sewage treatment facility are newly developed considering thickness of FRP shell, types of steel pipe stiffer and diaphragm wall. The direct tensile and bending test for FRP material of septic tank were performed. The increase effect of ultimate strength due to the circular steel pipe are investigated by the full scale field test and compared with the results by the finite element analysis.

  • As construction work on soft ground increases, many researchers have studied to secure the stability of trafficability with interest in construction safety accidents due to reinforcement work. Although the stability of soft ground is evaluated based on the allowable bearing capacity of theoretical equations proposed in the literature such as Yamanouchi and Meyerhof formulas, further numerical verification also requires comparison of the stress increase (Δσz) and deformation of the distributed contact pressure on the soft ground. In this study, the deformation of the soft ground is compared with the increasing the seam tensile strength of geotextile using the finite element analysis program, and the stress increase is investigated by variation of the distributed contact pressure by appling input data of case study.

  • The magnitude and the orientation of in-situ stresses contribute to ground displacement and stresses in the field of underground space. This paper investigates in-situ stresses at various depth on the basis of 392 data which were determined by over-coring and hydro-fracturing test methods in the Korea peninsula. The result shows that in-situ stress distribution are more or less non-uniform through the Granite and Gneiss sub-area, and that the K-value in the Volcanic sub-area are below 1 at the deep depth. Also, the result of three dimensional numerical analyses of tunnel shows that the direction and magnitude of displacement around tunnel are much effected by the stress difference between the maximum and the minimum horizontal stress.

  • If the load of constructing vehicles during the construction work acts on the road or the ground surface on the soft ground, due to the excess stresses in soils the trafficability of the vehicles influences the constructing efficiency, constructing period and so on. Stress distribution in soils is the very important element to design and to solve the problems of settlement, safety of foundations and trafficability of constructing vehicle in civil engineering. This research represents the comparative estimation of the actual and theoretical measurement on the underground stress of outer layer for each soil after the observation of each top soil layer for its vertical and horizontal stress in (1)homogeneous sand ground (2) weak stratum with the sand soil (3) weak stratum with gravel of the soil model, and it also investigates the effect of subsidence of ground by the repeated load. The underground stress turn out to be different in the value of theoretical and actual measurement after the trial examination of model.

  • The simple linear elastic-perfectly plastic model with soil parameters $s_u,\;E_u$ and n of undrained condition is usually applied to predict the displacement of a constructed diaphragm wall(DW) on soft soils during excavation. However, the application of this soil model for finite element analysis could not interpret the continued increment of the lateral displacement of the DW for the large and deep excavation area both during the elapsed time without activity of excavation and after finishing excavation. To study the characteristic behaviors of soil behind the DW during the periods without excavation, a series of tests on soft Bangkok clay samples are simulated in the same manner as stress condition of soil elements happening behind diaphragm wall by triaxial tests. Three kinds of triaxial tests are carried out in this research: $K_0$ consolidated undrained compression($CK_0U_C$) and $K_0$ consolidated drained/undrained unloading compression with periodic decrement of horizontal pressure($CK_0DUC$ and $CK_0UUC$). The study shows that the shear strength of series $CK_0DUC$ tests is equal to the residual strength of $CK_0UC$ tests. The Young's modulus determined at each decrement step of the horizontal pressure of soil specimen on $CK_0DUC$ tests decreases with increase in the deviator stress. In addition, the slope of Critical State Line of both $CK_0UC$ and $CK_0DUC$ tests is equal. Moreover, the axial and radial strain rates of each decrement of horizontal pressure step of $CK_0DUC$ tests are established with the function of time, a slope of critical state line and a ratio of deviator and mean effective stress. This study shows that the results of the unloading compression triaxial tests can be used to predict the diaphragm wall deflection during excavation.

  • Pipes buried in around a construction site of urbanized area tend to be affected by the vibration caused by construction loads. The behaviors of buried pipes affected by periodic vibration were analyzed through numerical analyses based on existing study and experimental results. From the results of theses analyses, the serviceability of buried pipes subjected to vibration was verified. This study analyzed the pipe behaviors subjected to dump truck loads with respect to burial depths, and this research was performed as foundation study to establish standards for managing buried pipes. The analyses were performed with burial depth of 0.6, 1.2, 1.8m and vehicle velocity of 10km/h. From theses analyses, the vibration velocity and occurred stress tend to decrease as a burial depth increases.

  • Recently, small-scale excavation like ground cavity restoration and buried pipe replacement works are being carried out in urban area, in order to improve living convenience. This paper describes experiment results on the ground reinforcement method that can reduce the buried pipe damage, when the differential settlement occurred due to poor compaction of ground below the buried pipe. Plate load tests were conducted to evaluate a reinforcement effect of ground using concrete mat and expansion mat in the ground below the buried pipe. The results showed that the stress reduction ratio by concrete mat and expansion mat according to the surcharge load was about 46%~48% and 39%~42%, respectively. Therefore, the differential settlement of the buried pipe and the ground deformation below the buried pipes were reduced by the reinforcement effect of the concrete mat and expansion mat. This means that it is possible to prevent a buried pipe damage due to underground cavity and ground subsidence, if concrete mat and expansion mat are reinforced in the ground below the buried pipe or on the ground between the buried pipes.
