  • Environmental risk is one of major risks in contemporary society which is often conceptualized in terms of 'risk society'. The crisis which retains such environmental risk can be characterized by 'technical hazards', rather than natural hazards in traditional societies, because of potentiality of technical control over its generation and managing process. Environmental crisis tends to be recurred due to certain limitations of response of both government and civil society. Moreover, it can be argued that generation of environmental crisis and limitations of its managing process are inherent in problematic structures in contemporary society, especially in its 4 basic elements and their characters; that is, capitalist market economy which promotes increasing profits and decreasing cost; bureaucratic representative politics which has brought about concentration of power and evasion of responsibility, instrumental science and technology which leads to blind belief on scientific knowledge and its uncertainty; and finally individualistic way of life with exclusive and passive response to crisis. This paper aims to consider the generation and managing process of environmental crisis in terms of these 4 basic elements, with comparative studies on empirical cases of the water crisis by Phenol pollution in Taegu in 1991 and the water crisis by parasites contamination in Sydney in 1998.

  • Korean studies are in crisis because they have fallen prey to the territorial trap associated with methodological territorialism and methodological nationalism. In order to overcome this situation, this paper suggests the studies on Korea to be more active in accepting the socio-spatial perspective that emphasize the inseparability of society and space. In particular, paying special attention to the 4 important dimensions of socio-spatial relations, such as place, territory, network and scale, it examines the ways in which these 4 dimensions are overlapped, interconnected and dynamically interacting with one another from the perspective of "multi-scalar networked territoriality". In conclusion, I argue that the Korean studies need to understand the variegated and multi-scalar nature of Korea, a place, which is constituted through complex interactions among diverse political, social, economic and cultural forces and processes that operate in various places and at diverse geographical scales.those days, such as agriculture, crops, and transportation of goods. Fifth, the bibliography and citations explaining all instances reveal that China (Qing) is a great civilization of the advanced world and that the scholarship of Joseon relied on and accepted it. Sixth, except for horse raising and management, farming implements for rice transplantation, sericulture, and natural dying of cloth, most of the topics are useful even today. In short, theres is a profound aspect to the content that makes it possible to estimate the "geographical thinking". In general, the focus of the content of this book directly linked to the practical agricultural economy of the common people.

  • The rural elderly population has social capital based on regionalism and kinship, which acts as a positive function in terms of their self-efficacy. Self-efficacy refers to the belief in one's own abilities. In general, elderly people with high self-efficacy maintain a healthy life and age successfully. This study examines how the rural elderly population perceive their self-efficacy and social capital and analyzes the role of social capital as a mediating variable. Social capital consists of 4 aspects; trust, norms, network and participation. For this study, data were gathered from 344 rural elderly people aged 60 years and over. The results of this study were as follows. According to the analysis of the structure equation modeling effect, the direct effect of subjective health status on self-efficacy, the indirect effect of the parameters of norms and the total effect were all statistically significant. Second, the direct effect of adult children's support on self-efficacy was significant, and the indirect effects of the parameters of trust, norms and total effect were all statistically significant. This study confirmed that social capital has a mediating effect on the relationship among the subjective health status of the rural elderly, adult children's support and self-efficacy. Furthermore, social capital had a positive impact on the self-efficacy of the rural elderly. Based on these results, a policy for making use of the social capital of the rural elderly should be developed.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of successful aging on depression and social capital(trust, norm, participation, network) of the elderly. Methods: Samples were obtained from 184 people aged over 65 years old in one county of Kyungsangbukdo. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: First, depression, social capital and successful aging were significantly different by age, economic status and religion. Secondly, regression analysis showed that depression affected a negative influence on successful aging in Model 1, which analyzed only depression. However, Model 2, which analyzed depression and social capital at the same time, showed that only social capital affected successful aging. Conclusions: It was suggested to develop health promotion and social participation program are required for successful aging of the elderly.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the optimal investment conditions of SOC facilities for maximizing regional social welfare in implementing the urban development project in the theoretical fashion. Particularily, SOC facilities are divided into both supply-side($P_s$) and demand-side SOC ($P_d$) in the paper. General equilibrium analysis from the intra-regional viewpoint by utilizing Pareto's Optimal Conditions and by revising Samuleson's Conditions for public goods($P_s$ and $P_d$) results in the optimum pattern of SOC investment. The following are important implications from the analysis. First, rather than the pursue social equity, SOC investment is to resolve the issue of efficiency to activate the regional economy. Second, the marginal rate of transformation (MRT) between $P_s$ and $P_d$ in the region is to play a significant role in structuring SOC investment plant of local government for social welfare maximization. Third, the optimal SOC investment policy based on this regional economy but also to generate the enhancement of soical amenities of the residents.

  • This paper reviews the achievements of the infrastructure investment policies since around 1990 and identifies policy area in which further efforts should be made. Traditional definition of social overhead capital has implied that the government should be the main, if not sole, supplier of the service. However, many sectors or sub-sectors of infrastructure investment and service allow room for private sector involvement. Expanding the role of the private sector will supplement the resources of the public sector, but more importantly, introduce competition in infrastructure provision. Competition will enhance the efficiency even a particular service remains in the hand public supplier. Private sector involvement, however, raises special problems in Koran context. They are the concentration of the Capital region and regional imbalance; excessive economic powers of large business conglomerator, so-called land problems. We examine each problems in detail and suggests possible solutions.

  • Recently as globalization of financial capital is progressed, possibility of crisis and unreliability of world economy is more growing. Korean economy required radical restructuring because of the financial crisis and the economic changes occurred in that process. This study is to explain the economic changes of Gwanagju city is produced by the financial crisis of Korean economy The most important industries are service and transportation equipment in Gwangju city. These industries began to decrease after financial crisis but machinery equipment, electrical machinery & electronics and rubber goods & plastic industry is growing relatively. Because of the decrease of service, the economy of inner city which service industry relatively agglomerated in is reducing. And agglomeration space for the optical photonics industry was built up by the upbringing policy of government on high-technology industry to overcome the economic crisis and micro industrial space such as venture building and establishment nursery center was built up. But high-technology industries have many geographical limits to embed in Gwanagju city, so there needs to construct regional innovation system for knowledge based economies

  • Using data collected from franchisees from Busan, we empirically examined the relationship both structural (tie strength), relational (trust), and cognitive (shared value) of social capital and between those dimensions and the patterns of economic performance and noneconomic performance (relationship continuity intention). So we established 9 hypotheses to test the structural relationship among dimensions of social capital and performances like below. H1: A franchisee's perceived tie strength with its franchisor will positively influence its trust in the franchisor. H2: A franchisee's perceived shared value with its franchisor will positively influence its trust in the franchisor. H3: A franchisee's perceived tie strength with its franchisor will positively influence its economic performance. H4: A franchisee's perceived shared value with its franchisor will positively influence its economic performance. H5: A franchisee's perceived trust in its franchisor will positively influence its economic performance. H6: A franchisee's perceived tie strength with its franchisor will positively influence its relationship continuity intention with the franchisor. H7: A franchisee's perceived shared value with its franchisor will positively influence its relationship continuity intention with the franchisor. H8: A franchisee's perceived trust in its franchisor will positively influence its relationship continuity intention with the franchisor. H9: A franchisee's perceived economic performance will positively influence its relationship continuity intention with the franchisor. The conceptual model specifying the relationship among dimensions of social capital and performances is presented in Fig. 1. Tests of the hypotheses were performed using a structural equation model. This model also reflected a good fit to the data ($\chi^2$=101.12 df=62 p=0.004, RMSEA=0.050 GFI=0.936 AGFI=0.895 NFI=0.959 CFI=0.986). The standardized solution estimated by the AMOS 7 program was for interpreting the structural results (Table 1). As was expected, tie strength and shared value were founded to be significant predictors of trust (H1 supported; H2 supported). Tie strength and trust have a significant positive effect on economic performance (H3 supported; H5 supported). But shared value have not a significant effect on economic performance (H4 Rejected). Tie strength were not associated with relationship continuity intention (H6 Rejected). While on the other higher shared value, trust, and economic performance have a significant effect on the relationship continuity intention (H7 supported; H8 supported; H9 supported). The results show integratedly that, first, tie strength does not affect directly but affects indirectly on relationship continuity intention via trust and economic performance. Second, shared goals affect directly and do indirectly via trust on relationship continuity intention. But shared goals does not affect via economic performance on relationship continuity intention. Finally, the study suggests important implications for both research and practice for franchise system especially.
