The purpose of this study was to explore the factors related to social participation of Korean young-old adults residing in urban area with a focus on the effects of various motivations. In addition, this study examined gender differences in the relationships between social participation and motivations of social participation. Self-oriented motivation, network-oriented motivation, and society-oriented motivation were considered as motivations of social participation. The study subjects were 836 men and 877 women aged 50-69. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires in 2009. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between motivations and the level of social participation using the SAS program. Main results were as follows: 1) The network-oriented motivation and society-oriented motivations were significantly related to the level of social participation; 2) Although men and women significantly differed in the patterns of social participation, gender differences were not found in the relationships between the social participation and motivations. These findings imply that network-oriented motivation and society-oriented motivation are important for facilitating the social participation of Korean young elderly. Further implications were discussed.

In terms of quality of life, leisure and health have become important issues with increasing incomes and decreasing working hours in Korea. This study empirically investigates the effects of urban open space on outdoor leisure activities, emphasizing that parks, river banks, and physical activity sites can provide opportunities such as walking, jogging, stretching, and cycling, free of charge to all residents. Based on 2010 sample survey data on leisure activities, multiple regression model as well as hierarchical linear model are estimated, taking account of both individual characteristics on demand and environmental/areal factors on supply side, including open space. Major findings include: first, urban open space significantly increases residents' outdoor leisure activities, second, the effect is more significant for the elderly and third, the effect is more valid for those with relatively low incomes and less education. These results imply that urban open space could be available as a local public good to cope with population aging and to realize health city and social welfare, since this space is not only a leisure place but also public health and welfare facilities.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the elderly based on the types of Kyungrodang participation and explores ways toward development of Kyungrodang. A national sample data, collected by the Korean Institute for the Health and Social Welfare in 2004 is analyzed by employing Chi-Square test of independence, ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression(n=3,005). A significant difference is noted in age, area, and socioeconomic status among the elderly based on the types of Kyungrodang participation. The results show that those elderly living in rural areas with older and lower socioeconomic status are more likely to participate at Kyungrodang, whereas, elderly living in urban areas with younger and higher socioeconomic status are less likely to participate at Kyungrodang and discontinue to use the services. Although there is a difference between the gender, the most significant reason for not using and discontinuing Kyungrodang is because the elderly can not get along with the other participants. In other words, the major problem that needs to be solved is to socializing and providing service programs satisfying all participants. Based on the results and recent socioeconomic changes of the older population, some policy issues are suggested for the development of Kyungrodang.
This study aimed to investigate factors affecting frailty by urinary incontinence groups among the vulnerable elderly woman in Korea. In this secondary analysis, data were collected from records for 3,251 elders registered in the Visiting Health Management program of Public Health Centers in 2012. body mass index, waist circumference, timed up & go, depression, self rated helath, walking exercise, flexibility exercise, strengh exercise and frailty were assessed. Data were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression to determine the associated factors of frailty by urinary incontinence. Depression, walking exercise, timed up & go and age were found to be factors significantly associated with frailty among the elders with incontinence(F=38.321, p<.001). Age, depression, walking exercise, self rated health and tined up & go were found to be factors associated with frailty in the elders without incontinence(F=265.666 p<.001). The findings show that frailty of elders and associated factors were different by urinary incontinence, and common factors affecting frailty were depression, walking exercise, timed up & go, age. Thus, these factors should be considered in the development of intervention program for care and prevention of frailty and program should be modified according to urinary incontinence.

The survey had 154 participants and was conducted over a two-month period from August to September 2020. Results : The main results of this study were as follow: first, there was no correlation between the predisposing factors and cognitive improvement program; second, among the enabling factors, diversity, interest, and effectiveness of the program were correlated with the cognitive improvement program; and third, there was no correlation between participation in the cognitive improvement program and need factors. Conclusion : This study shows that the results of basic information and evidence will be identified through analysis of the results of the study and that the implications for the development of cognitive improvement programs will be obtained in the future.
Objective : This study aimed to assess the effects of occupation-based lifestyle intervention programs on older adults in the local community. Methods : Nine community-dwelling older individuals participated in this study using a one-group pre-post design. The occupation-based lifestyle intervention program consisted of 12 group sessions, and one individual session was conducted for seven weeks. Occupational balance, activity occupancy, activity participation, depression, health-related quality of life, and program satisfaction were assessed. Results : The average attendance rate of the nine participants was 10.11 (SD=1.36). Overall occupational balance (p=.012), activity participation status (p=.008), performance (p=.012), and satisfaction with activity participation (p=.008) were increased. Furthermore, the results showed changes in leisure time (p=.008) and rest time (p=.008). Finally, there were some improvements in the overall health-related quality of life (p=.034) and depression scores (p=.012). The purpose of this study is to investigate the moderating effect of home-based welfare facilities for older adults on the associations between the activities of daily living (ADL) / instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and the depressive symptoms among Koreans in later life. Multilevel analysis was conducted with Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging 5th data and the public report about welfare facilities from Ministry of Health and Welfare in Korea. Samples were 4,139 older adults over 65 years old. The dependent variable was depressive symptoms, and individual level independent variables were ADL and IADL. The ratio of home-based welfare facilities out of 10,000 older adults in each city and province was the moderator. As a result, the effects of ADL on depressive symptoms vary according to the proportion of elderly welfare facilities out of the old population in the community. In specific, the older adults who live in the place where the elderly welfare facility rate was higher were less affected by ADL. Also, the more IADL people had, the more depressive symptoms they had. However, the interaction effect between IADL and the proportion of home-based welfare facilities was not significant. It suggests that delivering welfare services helping ADL through the home-based welfare facilities may be useful for decreasing depressive symptoms. Moreover, considering the proportion of facilities and older population will be helpful to make the welfare facilities efficiently work.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to measure the level of activity possessed by the daily activities of the elderly. In addition, we attempted to compare the differences in the categories of daily activities. Methods : We used K-ACS to evaluate 30 older people who engaged in economic activity living in community, 30 older people who did not have economic activity living in community, and 30 older people living in facility. We compared the level of activity retention. Results : There was a significant difference of level of activity retention according to the daily activity category of the subjects(p <.001). There was a difference in the instrumental activities according to the category of each activity, while the three groups showed similar patterns in leisure activities and social activities. In particular, all three groups were most likely to rest and watch television in the leisure activities, so the leisure activities of the elderly in Korea were very limited. Among the general characteristics, it was analyzed that there was a correlation between the activity, the marital status, the religion and the cognitive level. Conclusion : According to the daily activities category of the elderly, there was a difference in level of activity retention and the characteristics of daily activities correlated with the activities of the elderly. This suggests that it may be a basic data for establishing a client - centered intervention plan by considering the characteristics affecting daily living and level of activity retention of the elderly in the occupational therapy.
