To evaluate bacteriological and toxicological safety hygienic indicator bacterium and paralytic and diarrhetic shellfish toxins in the shellfish produced in Hansan Geojeman 2013-2017 were investigated. Fecal coliforms were < 18~330 MPN/100 g in 404 oyster samples. But all samples tested, did not exceed 230 E. coli MPN/100 g. Geometric mean of E. coli for oyster samples collected during major shellfish production period was 24.3 MPN/100 g, considerde stable results. Bacteriological quality of oysters collected from Hansan Geojeman meets the standard value based on shellfish hygiene of the Food Sanitation Act of Korea and also meets Grade A, according to classification of shellfish harvesting areas of the European Union. For toxicological evaluation of Hansan Geojeman, 532 oyster samples and 268 mussel samples as an indicator, were analyzed. Paralytic shellfish toxins were detected in the range of 0.42~2.29 mg/kg in eight mussel samples, and exceeded criteria in three samples from early to late April 2013. Diarrhetic shellfish toxin was detected in three of 120 samples, but it was revealed to be under regulation value (0.16 mg Okadaic Acid equ./kg). As a result of toxicological evaluation, paralytic and diarrhetic shellfish toxins were not detected in oyster samples, but it was found that mussel as an indicator species, exceeded the threshold value of paralytic shellfish toxin. Accordingly, sanitary surveys were continuously requested for food safety management of shellfish.

The concept of carrying capacity for bivalve culture of an area can be classified into four hierarchical categories, according to their level of complexity and scope, such as physical, production, ecological and social carrying capacity. Most scientific efforts to date have been directed towards modelling production carrying capacity and some of the resultant models have been used successfully. But, the modelling of ecological carrying capacity is still in its infancy, because it should consider the whole ecosystem and all culture activities. A more holistic approach is needed to determine the influence of bivalve aquaculture on the environment and ecological carrying capacity. As an alternative, we can use a set of ecological indicators which can show the environmental performance of bivalve farms and assess ecological carrying capacity. Clearance efficiency and filtration pressure indicators show the value of 0.331 and 0.203, respectively, and these indicators suggest that the present level of culture in GeojeHansan Bay is above the ecological carrying capacity of 0.05. Consequently, these indicators can provide a guidance on the present level of culture in regard to production and ecological carrying capacity in GeojeHansan Bay.

The importance of aquafarming is increasing all over the world, however the coastal environment in the semi-closed inner bay has been aggravated due to the long term production and the high stocking density. For the sustainable aquafarming, there is a requirement for a eco-friendly fishery management by the estimation of ecological carrying capacity. The model development and application is still in the initial step, because it has to consider the whole ecosystem and all culture activities. As an alternative, there is a requirement for ecological indicator to assess the ecological performance. This study tried the estimation of ecological carrying capacity using ecological indicator. The production and the facility of the oyster farms was 4,935M/T, $49ind./m^3$ in Geoje-Hansan Bay(2008). Filtration pressure indicator was 0.203 which could provide a guidance on the present level of culture development. According to the environmental characteristics and the present oyster farms in Geoje-Hansan Bay, the newly assessed filtration pressure for the acceptable ecological carrying capacity was 0.102. Consequently, ecological carrying capacity in Geoje-Hansan Bay was 2,480M/T, $25ind./m^3$ and this represents the level of culture that can be introduced into Geoje-Hansan Bay without leading to significant changes to ecological process, species, populations or communities. Our study utilized the ecological indicator to estimate ecological carrying capacity of oyster farming for sustainable productivity and this could be the scientific basis for the eco-friendly fishery management.

Carrying capacity model focused on interactions between the filter-feeder growth and their environments is presented, and differences among existing various carrying capacity models are reviewed. For carrying capacity modeling of shellfish system, we constructed a new numerical model coupled oyster growth model with an ecosystem model (EUTRP2). Physical and biological processes such as water transport and mixing, primary production, feeding and growth of the cultivated oyster, Crassostrea gigas and benthic-pelagic exchange were included in the model, Simulated results for validation showed that the more phytoplankton biomass decreased, the more oyster meat weight and nutrients increased, suggesting a powerful tool for reasonable management of shellfish aquaculture. The model was sensitive to parameters controlling the primary production. Among the ecosystem compartments, the oyster growth is highly influenced by small changes in the physiological parameters of phytoplankton and oyster. This sensitivity analysis indicated the importance of experimental data on biological parameters for calibration of the model.

A 3D hydrodynamic-ecological coupled model was applied to estimate carrying capacity in Geoje-Hansan Bay where is one of the most important oyster culturing grounds in Korea. We considered the carrying capacity as the difference between food supply to the oysters and food demand, considering monthly difference of the actual growth. The food supply to the system was determined from the results of the model simulation (tidal exchange and chlorophyll $\alpha$) over the culturing period from September to May of the following year. The food demand was estimated from the food concentration (chlorophyll $\alpha$) multiple the filtration rate of oysters that is considered monthly different growth rate of oysters and food concentration. The values of carrying capacity for the system varied from 6.1 ton/ha (minimum carrying capacity) in february to 14.91 ton/ha (maximum carrying capacity) in April of marketable size oysters (>4 g wet-tissue weight) depending on temporal variations in the food supply. The oyster production calculated from present facilities was 9 ton/ha in wet-tissue weight in Geoje-Hansan Bay. This value corresponded to $60\%$ of maximum carrying capacity of the system. The optimal carrying capacity without negatively affecting on oyster production was 5.5 ton/ha when calculated from annual statistic data and 6.1 ton/ha when determined by this study. These results suggest that it must be reduced $32\%$~$39\%$ of oyster facilities in the system.

Four natural Quercus stands in Kwangju, Kyonggi-Do, of which ages ranging from 32 to 38 years old, were studied to compare their growth, biomass and net production. Ten $10m{\times}10m$ quadrats were set up and ten sample trees were harvested for dimension analysis in each stand. The largest mean DBH and height were shown by Q. acutissima stand, and followed by Q. variabilis stand, Q. mongolica stand, and Q. dentata stand in descending order. Tree density was the highest at Q. variabilis stand, and followed by Q. dentata stand, Q. mongolica stand, and Q. acutissima stand in descending order. Biomass was the largest at Q. acutissima stand(122.73t/ha), and followed by Q. variabilis stand(87.03t/ha), Q. mongolica stand(72.14t/ha), and Q. dentata stand(38.56t/ha) in descending order. Net production was the greatest at Q. mongolica stand(7.49t/ha/yr.), and followed by Q. variabilis stand(6.47t/ha/yr.), Q. acutissima stand(6.06t/ha/yr.), and Q. dentata stand(3.52t/ha/yr.) in descending order. The highest net assimilation ratio was exhibited by Q. acutissima stand (3.275), and followed by Q. variabilis stand(2.898), Q. mongolica stand(2.888), and Q. dentata stand (1.840) in descending order. The difference in net assimilation ratio and net production among four stands was caused by differences in their leaf biomass. The difference in net production and biomass among four stands was due to that in the distribution of net production among stems, branches and leaves.
Global warming affects terrestrial ecosystem productivity including photosynthesis and plant growth. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of experimental warming on chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rate of Quercus variabilis Blume seedlings. One-year-old Q. variabilis seedlings were planted in control and warmed plots in April 2010. The air temperature of warmed plots was increased by $3^{\circ}C$ compared to control plots using the infrared lamp from November 2010. Total chlorophyll contents were higher in warmed plots than those in control plots in May, July, August, September and October, 2012, however, the differences were statistically significant only in October. Net photosynthetic rates were also higher in warmed plots than those in control plots in May (57.0%), September (21.4%), and October (89.6%), however, the differences were significant only in May and October. Higher chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rate of warmed plots in spring and fall might be related to the extended growing season length.
This study was carried out to improve the forest management method considering the use of high value added timber in the natural broadleaf forests. For this purpose, the criteria for evaluating the quality grade of standing trees were established and applied to the oak stand in the central region of Korea. The evaluation factors of the grade were bending of stem, branch, stem damage, and other defects. If the logs are divided into 2.1 m units and three logs up to 6.3 m are available, they are classified as Grade I (G-I). If two logs are available, they are classified as Grade II (G-II), If only one log is available, it is classified as Grade III (G-III). When any log is not available as timber, it is classified as Grade IV (G-IV). As a result of applying the grade to the oak stand, G-I was 6.7 %, G-II was 28.0 %, G-III was 38.3 %, and G-IV was 27.0 %. The ratio of standing trees by oak species of higher than G-III was 88.2 % for Quercus acutissima, 88.1 % for Q. variabilis, 83.5 % for Q. serrata, 56.3 % for Q. aliena, and 50.3 % for Q. mongolica, respectively. The G-IV ratio for Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica tended to decrease with increasing diameter at breast height. The order of major defect affecting the grading level was bending of stem > branch > stem damage > other defects. Considering the grade level and oak species distribution, it was concluded possible to produce high quality hardwood timber when we concentrate forest tending techniques on Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stand. In order to improve the accuracy of grading, it is necessary to continuous complement through the monitoring research for evaluation factors.

AOAC Mouse Bioassay Analysis (MBA) has been the gold standard for the analysis of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin (PSP toxin) for more than 50 years. However, this method has inaccurate limit of quantification and cannot be used to determine toxic profiles. An HPLC method (PCOX) was optimized for Korean shellfish to establish an alternative or supplementary method for PSP analysis and was intended to be used for the official monitoring and regulation of food. The recovery rate of the PCOX method was 83.5-112.1% and the limit of quantification for total toxin was about $8.6{\mu}g$/100 g. A long-term comparison study showed a good correlation of the PCOX results with the AOAC MBA results: the correlation factors were 0.9534 and 0.9109 for oyster and mussel matrices, respectively. The PCOX method may be used as an alternative or supplementary method for AOAC MBA to monitor the occurrence of PSP and to analyze PSP toxin profile in oysters and mussels.

The technology of fast pyrolysis is regarded as a promising route to convert lignocellulose biomass into bio-oil which can be upgraded to transportable fuels and high quality chemical products. Despite these promises, commercialization of bio-oil for fuels and chemicals production is limited due to its notoriously undesirable characteristics, such as high and changing viscosity, high water and oxygen contents, low heating value and high acidity. Therefore, in this study quality improvement of bio-oil through vaccum distillation had been targeted. A 600 g of cork oak(Quercus variabilis) which grounded 0.8~1.4 mm was processed into bio-oil via fast pyrolysis for 1.64 seconds at $465^{\circ}C$ and temperature of vaccum distillation(100hPa) was designed to control, $40^{\circ}C$, 50, 60, 70, and 80 for 30min. Bio-oil, biochar, and gas of pyrolytic product were produced to 62.6, 18.0 and 19.3 wt%, respectively. The water content, viscosity, HHV(Higher Heating Value) and pH of bio-oil were measured to 0.9~26.1 wt%, 4.2~11.0 cSt 3,893~5,230 kcal/kg and 2.6~3.0, respectively. Despite these quality improvement, production was still limited due to its notoriously undesirable characteristics, therefore continous quality improvement will be needed in order to use practical fuel of bio-oil.
