  • In karst formation area, the tunnel support system is an important factor for the tunnel safety during operation. It is also not easy to determine the tunnel supporting system in the design stage. Therefore, it is necessary to standardize the tunnel supporting system in uncertain ground condition. This paper presents the standardization of the tunnel supporting systems to be adopt in karst formation. For the tunnel planned in the project area, karst features and the expected scenarios in the tunnel area were developed based on the results of the geological and geotechnical assessment. In order to provide specific supporting system and construction details for a wide range of possible karst features, the generalized typical support systems are developed according to the classification of karst features. In addition, the initial support systems and construction sequence for each karst feature are also presented in this paper.

  • In domestic cases, the standard support pattern of 2-lanes road tunnels is presented because construction experience and high degree various data was abundant. But, it is not desirable to apply standard for 2-Arch tunnels that the precedent and measuring data is insufficient existing support pattern blasting plan and interpretation of separate way concerning specific terrain and rock quality. In this study, behavior according to load distribution ratio and Unsymmetrical Pressure about standard support pattern which is applied in design and construction of 2-arch tunnels was analysed and the examination of blasting vibration has influence on the center wall is conducted as a consequence reasonableness of support whether or not with presumed support pressure and ground reaction curve method. In result appropriateness of standard support pattern, support quantity is proper but considers specific terrain and rock quality condition when design and construction of further step 2-arch tunnel standard support pattern must be decided by considering terrains, soil properties and construction condition of the objective tunnel.

  • Rock mass is very inhomogeneous in nature and data obtained by site investigations and tests are very limited. For this reason, many uncertainties are to be included in the process of constructing structures in rock mass. In the design of a tunnel, support pattern, advance rate, and excavation method, which are important design parameters, must be determined to be optimal. However, it is not easy to determine those parameters. Moreover if those parameters are determined incorrectly, unexpected risk occurs such as decrease in the stability of a tunnel or economic loss due to the excessive supports etc. In this study, how to determine an optimal support pattern and advance rate, which are the important tunnel design parameters, is introduced based on a risk analysis. It can be confirmed quantitatively that the more supported a tunnel is, the larger reliability index becomes and the more stable the tunnel becomes. Also an optimal support pattern and advance rate can be determined quantitatively by performing a risk analysis considering construction cost and the cost of loss which can be occurred due to the collapse of a tunnel.

  • In this study, the stability of the room-and-pillar underground method was investigated using numerical analysis method. In-situ geotechnical investigation was conducted, and a supporting pattern was selected based on the geotechnical investigation data. For the supporting pattern, Type-1, 2, 3 were selected for each ground condition. A 3D numerical analysis model was developed for effective simulation as the room-and-pillar underground method consist of a pillar and room. As a review of numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the crown settlement, convergence, shotcrete and rock bolt were all stable in all supporting patterns. As a result of the analysis by the construction stage, it was confirmed that excessive stress was generated in the room when the construction stage of forming pillar. So, precise construction is required during the actual construction stage of the pillar formation.

  • It is important to design tunnel support system considering the various loads acting on the tunnel because they have a direct impact on the stability of tunnels. In Korea, standardized support patterns are defined based on the rock mass classification system depending on the project, and it is stated that it should be modified appropriately considering the behavior of tunnel during construction. In this study, the tunnel support pattern optimization method is suggested based on the convergence-confinement method, earth pressure, axial force of rock bolt, and moment acting on the shotcrete. The length and spacing of the rock bolts and the thickness of the shotcrete were optimized by using the differential evolution algorithm (DEA) and the results were compared to the standard support pattern III for railway tunnel. Rock bolt length can be reduced and the installation interval can be widened for shallow tunnel. As the depth of tunnel increases, the thickness of shotcrete increases linearly. Therefore, the thickness of shotcrete should be thicker than the standard support pattern as the depth of tunnel increases to secure the stability of tunnel.

  • Four road tunnels of which the construction conditions were similar were selected in the paper, and laboratory tests and rockmass classification for the tunnels were carried out. And the analysis was performed to find out the correlation between ratio of bit abrasion or drilling parameter and support pattern of tunnel using jumbo drill machine. It was analyzed that there was average abrasion of bit from 11.85% to 3.25% per support patterns of tunnel in four tunnels. Drilling parameter happens to fluctuate according to extent of fracture zone.

  • Recently, plans of tunnel and construction have increased. Unfortunately, the more we have tunnels, the more we have accidents in there. Because an accident or a fire in the tunnel is fatal to user safety, social concerns are focusing on the disaster prevention facilities. Cross passage tunnel is regarded as one of the useful disaster prevention facilities, which is increasing, while there were only few studies about the support system. This study tried to verify whether the support system is appropriate or not with empirical methods-theoretical methods and back analysis using measurement data. Additionally, we also looked into the range of reinforcement in accordance with strength/stress ratio of rock mass.

  • When choosing the support pattern of tunnel, the characteristics of rock are identified from the result of the surface geologic survey, boring, and geophysical prospecting and laboratory test. And a rock mass rating is classified and excavation method and standard support pattern are designed considering rock classification, domestic and international construction practices, numerical analysis. According to the revised design standard for tunnel, it was recommended to classify the rock mass rating for the design of tunnel into a rating based on RMR. If necessary, it proposed a flexible standard allowed applying more atomized the rock mass rating and Q-System. Also, the resonable verification of the support pattern must be accompanied because the factors affecting the structure and behavior of ground during the construction of tunnel are the main factors of uncertainty factors such as the nature of ground, ground water and the characteristics of structural materials. These days, such verification method is getting more specialized and diversified. In this study, the empirical method, numerical analysis and comparative analysis of in situ measurements were used to prove the reasonableness in the support pattern by RMR and Q-value on the Imha Dam emergency spillway.
