  • Shear wave velocity is commonly invoked in explaining geophysical phenomena and in solving geotechnical engineering problems. In particular, the importance of shear wave velocity in geotechnical earthquake engineering has been widely recognized for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation. In the present study, various insitu seismic tests were performed to evaluate geotechnical dynamic characteristics at 183 sites in Korea, and shear wave velocity profiles with depth were determined to be representative of the dynamic properties at the investigated sites. Subsurface soil and rock layers at the target sites were reclassified into five geotechnical layers: fill, alluvial soil, weathered soil, weathered rock, and bedrock, taking into account their general uses in geotechnical earthquake engineering practice. Average shear wave velocity profiles for the five geotechnical layers were obtained by synthesizing the shear wave velocity profiles from seismic tests in the field. Based on the profiles, a representative shear wave velocity value was determined for each layer, for use in engineering seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

  • In this study, numerical analysis has been performed to compare the ground movements in a single ground layer and multiple ground layers due to nearby tunnel excavation. The numerical analysis has been conducted in the different ground layer conditions considering different construction conditions (volume loss at excavation face), and the results of the maximum surface settlement and horizontal displacement have been compared considering the ground layer and construction conditions. In addition, the maximum surface settlement from the numerical analysis has been compared with the maximum settlement at tunnel crown considering the ground layer and construction conditions, and the maximum surface settlement has been also compared with the maximum horizontal displacement with the ground layer conditions. Besides, the volume loss($V_L$) at tunnel excavation face has been compared with the total surface settlement volume($V_s$) with the variation of ground layer condition. The results from the numerical analysis have been compared with field measurements and by this comparison it is believed that the numerical results in this study can be utilized practically in analyzing the nearby ground behavior in different ground layer and construction conditions due to tunnel excavation.

  • It is important to ensure the seismic safety of pile-bent bridges constructed in areas with thick soft ground consisting of various soil layers against seismic motion in these layers. In this study, several synthetic seismic waves that are compatible with the seismic design spectrum for rock sites were generated, and the ground acceleration history of each soil layer was obtained based on ground analyses. Using these acceleration histories, each soil layer was modeled using equivalent linear springs, and multi-support excitation analyses were performed using the input motion obtained at each soil layer. Due to the nonlinear behavior of the soft soil layers, the intensity of the input ground motion was not amplified, which resulted in the elastic behavior of the bridge. In addition, inputting the acceleration history obtained from a particular layer simultaneously into all the ground springs reduced the response. Therefore, the seismic performance of this type of bridge might be overestimated if multi-excitation analysis is not performed.

  • Precise analysis of soil-structure interaction requires a proper description of soil profile. However, such approach becomes generally nearly unpractical for soil exhibiting material discontinuity and complex geometry since meshes should match that material discontinuity line. To overcome these difficulties, a different numerical integration method is adopted in this paper, which enables to integrate easily over an element with material discontinuity without regenerating mesh fellowing the discontinuity line. As a result the mesh is highly structured, loading to very regular silliness matrix. The influence of the shape of soil profile on the response is examined and it is seen that the proposed soil-structure analysis method can be easily used on soil-structure interaction problems with complicated soil profile and produce reliable results regardless of material discontinuities.

  • Tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements have been investigated by numerical parametric studies considering ground condition, excavation characteristics, and ground layers. Before the numerical study the existing methods of ground movement estimation have been collected and analysed to have some information of ground movements and to improve them providing a fundamental material for the numerical study. Numerical model simulation has been performed of a physical model test of tunnel excavation in which the ground movements were measured reliably and the results have been used to determine the numerical approach and the appropriate soil constitutive mode. With this procedure done, the results of numerical parametric studies have been put together to analyze and understand tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements.

  • For the reliable prediction of spatial geotechnical data, a procedure to build the Geotechnical Information System (GTIS) based on geo-knowledge within the frame of GIS technology was developed by introducing a couple of new concepts of the extended area containing the study area and the additional site visit for acquiring surface geological data. To build the GTIS for Gyeongju as the case study of regional model application, intensive site investigations and pre-existing geotechnical data collections were performed and additional site visit was also carried out for acquiring surface geo-layer data in accordance with the developed procedure. Within the GTIS based on geo-knowledge for Gyeongiu area, the spatially distributed geo-layers across the extended area were predicted using the geostatistical kriging method and those for the study area were extracted. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for the thickess of geo-layers and the depth to bedrock were constructed for the practical use in geotechnical field. It was evaluated that the GTIS based on geo-knowledge developed in this study is superior to the conventional geotechnical GIS in terms of both the standard deviation and the geological expert judgment.

  • For the structures near the seismogenic fault, the evaluation of seismic performance against near-fault ground motions is important as well as for design ground motions. In this study, characteristics of seismic behaviors and seismic performance of the pile-bent bridge constructed on the thick soft soil site with various weak soil layers were analyzed. The input ground motions were synthesized by the directivity pulse parameters for intra-plate regions. The ground motion acceleration histories of each layer were obtained by one-dimensional site response analysis. Each soil layer was modeled by equivalent linear springs, and multi-support excitations with different input ground motions at each soil spring were applied for nonlinear seismic analyses. The analysis result by the near-fault ground motions and ground motions matched to design spectra were compared. In case of the near fault ground motion input, the bridge behaved within the elastic range but the location of the maximum moment occurred was different from the result of design ground motion input.

  • Borehole Data is geotechnical information provided so that workers can safely perform construction at the field. It creates 3D data and supports viewing as a 3D image. Currently, all Korean companies that develop programs using 3D visualization use the MVS program developed by C Tech Development Corporation. However, the MVS program is a commercial program, and it is difficult to use MVS in 3D related programs developed by Korean Companies. In this paper, we propose to develop a program that can replace MVS to generate a 3D stratum model from clustered borehole information using Python's Gempy open-source. The 3D stratum model program can creates point data for each stratum and can creates a surface for each stratum through interpolation. Then, the 3D stratum model program is completed by merging the surfaces of each stratum. It was confirmed that there was no difference when a 3D model was created and compared with the MVS program and the proposed program from the borehole data of a Goyang area.
