  • This paper is to analyze the stability of Timoshenko beam-column on Pasternak foundation, with the extensional and the rotational spring at center point of span by Finite Element Method. To verify this Finite Element Method, the results by the proposed method are compared with the existing solutionsof Timoshenko beam-column without the extensional and the rotational spring and the shear foundation. The dynamic stability regions are decided by the dynamic stability analysis of Timoshenko beam-column on Pasternak foundation with the extensional and the rotation spring at center point of span.

  • Recently, several studies have been conducted on virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods to simulate the soil-pile interaction in response to spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures. However, the soil spring stiffness has not been properly considered due to the seismic load magnitude, and studies on the response spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures considering this circumstance are inadequate. Therefore, in this study, the response spectrum analysis was performed considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, and the dynamic behavior of the pile-supported structure was evaluated by comparing it with existing virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods. Comparing the experiment and analysis, the moment differences occurred up to 117% and 21% in the virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring models, respectively. Moreover, when the analysis was performed using an API p-y curve considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, the moment difference between the experiment and analysis was derived at a maximum of < 4%, and it is the most accurate method to simulate the experimental model response.

  • Ground in extremely cold and hot regions can sink by various environmental factors. Ground settlement can generate the negative skin friction to pile shaft, increase the base load of pile, and cut the stability of the pile. This study proposed a member responding ground deformation which can be inserted inside the pile. The member slightly compresses according to the ground settlement to reduce the negative skin friction. As the member materials, this study considered spring and spring-dashpot. To assess the ability of the member, the present research performed model tests for piles with or without the member within settled ground. In the model tests, the base load, total shaft resistance, and horizontal earth pressure were monitored and analyzed. Experimental results show that the pile with spring member can reduce the negative skin friction under small settlement conditions whereas it acts similar to the pile without the member under large settlement conditions as the spring was no longer compressed. However, the pile with the spring-dashpot member can reduce the negative skin friction continuously upon the ground settlement as the dashpot delays the load transfer to the spring and locates friction force on the unloading path.

  • In the seismic design the pile foundation system of the buildings generally have been modeled to have a fixed end for its convenience and conservativeness. But it is necessary to consider the soil-structure interaction for more reliable design. In this study, the framed tube building and brace tube building with pile foundation system under earthquake were analyzed considering soil-structural interaction by 3 pile foundation modeling methods; fixed-end model, 6 springs model and p-y springs model. And 2 soil conditions were used in analysis. For each cases, displacements, drifts, maximum stress, periods and 1st mode mass participation ratios were compared.

  • In this study, natural frequencies are compared using several pile-soil interaction (PSI) models to evaluate the effects of each model on resonance safety checks for a monopile type of wind turbine structure. Base spring, distributed spring, and three-dimensional brick-shell models represented the PSIs in the finite element model. To analyze the effects of the PSI models on a natural frequency, after a stiffness matrix calculation and Winkler-based beam model for base spring and distributed spring models were presented, respectively; natural frequencies from these models were investigated for monopiles with different geometries and soil properties. These results were compared with those from the brick-shell model. The results show that differences in the first natural frequency of the monopiles from each model are small when the small diameter of monopile penetrates hard soil and rock, while the distributed spring model can over-estimate the natural frequency for large monopiles installed in weak soil. Thus, an appropriate PSI model for natural frequency analyses should be adopted by considering soil conditions and structure scale.

  • The behavior of earth retaining structure was investigated by considering coupling between soil springs in elasto-plastic soil. For the computation of soil reaction, soil on both sides of walls was simplified as e1asto-plastic springs, and the required horizontal displacement to mobilize Terzaghi's active and passive state was applied to construct the p-y curve. Reliability on computer program developed is verified through the comparison between prediction and in-situ measurements. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the prediction by using coupling between soil springs simulates well the general trend observed by the in-situ measurements. It is also found that the horizontal displacement required for the active state gives a very small effect to the displacement of walls in the sandy soil.

  • It is important to ensure the seismic safety of pile-bent bridges constructed in areas with thick soft ground consisting of various soil layers against seismic motion in these layers. In this study, several synthetic seismic waves that are compatible with the seismic design spectrum for rock sites were generated, and the ground acceleration history of each soil layer was obtained based on ground analyses. Using these acceleration histories, each soil layer was modeled using equivalent linear springs, and multi-support excitation analyses were performed using the input motion obtained at each soil layer. Due to the nonlinear behavior of the soft soil layers, the intensity of the input ground motion was not amplified, which resulted in the elastic behavior of the bridge. In addition, inputting the acceleration history obtained from a particular layer simultaneously into all the ground springs reduced the response. Therefore, the seismic performance of this type of bridge might be overestimated if multi-excitation analysis is not performed.

  • In this study, the nonlinear dynamic model of the systems which include the offshore structure, the surrounding sea water in terms of the added mass, the foundation in terms of frequency independent springs, dashpots, and the floating ice feature with its hydrodynamic added mass, are proposed for the problem of the large ice floes impact. Dynamic Analysis is performed on two site conditions, sand site and silt site, and on two seasons, winter and summer, for various ice floe velocities. As a result of study, Ice floes from energy balenced method is lower than that from dynamic modeling on sand site, and higher than the on silt site.
