  • Usage of underground space is increasing at metropolitan city. More than 90% of flood damages have occurred at downtown of metropolitan cities. In order to prevent and/or minimize the flood-induced damage, an underground rainwater detention cavern was proposed to be built underneath existing structures. As for underground caverns to be built for flood control, multi-caverns will be mostly adopted rather than one giant cavern because of stability problem. Because of the stress concentration occurring in the pillars between two adjacent caverns, the pillar-stability is the Achilles' heel in multi-caverns. So, a new pillar-reinforcing technology was proposed in this paper for securing the pillar-stability. In the new pillar-reinforcing technology, reinforced materials which are composed of a steel bar and PC strands are used by applying pressurized grouting, and then, by applying the pre-stress to the PC strands and anchor body. Therefore, this new technology has an advantage of utilizing most of the strength that the in-situ ground can exert, and not much relying on the pre-cast concrete structure. The main effect of the pressurized grouting is the increase of the ground strength and more importantly the decrease of stress concentration in the pillar; that of the pre-stress is the increase of the ground strength due to the increase of the internal pressure. In this paper, ground reinforcing effects were verified the stress change in pillar is obtained by numerical analysis at each construction stage. From these results, the effects of pressurized grouting and pre-stress are verified.

  • Microcement grouting and micro pile are frequently used for ground modification during tunnel construction. The influence of grouting pressure of microcement grouting and micro pile to the existing bridge which is directly over the constructing tunnel is investigated. Three dimensional seepage flow-structure interactive analysis considering firm water pressure with full stages of construction including the construction of upper bridge, microcement grouting, micro pile and tunnel is performed. The settlement and tilting of the pier of existing bridge violate the design code and the reaction of the bridge are highly increased after grouting. The stress of tunnel bracings such as rockbolt and shotcrete also exceed the limit of the code. The pressure of microcement grouting is confined by bedrock and transmit to the surrounded soil and the upper bridge. Microcement grouting needs mid-high pressure to penetrate through weak fault plane and the pressure greatly influence the safety of the upper structure. It is important to decide and care the grouting pressure to improve weak fault plane directly under the existing structures and the pressure of microcement grouting should be considered in underground analysis.

  • In this study it was analyzed by 2-D FEM and 3-D FEM to evaluate the ground reinforceing effect of steel pipe reinforced multi -step grouting (SPRG) technique and the behavior of ground in the vicinity using the nonlinear FEM program for the ground condition of alluvium located on the top of tunnel applied by SPRG technique. It was found that the nonlinear 3-D analysis performed better than 2-D analysis in evaluating the usefulness of the SPRG technique, and it was also found that the safety was relatively secured by the stiffness of steel pipe to distribute the concentrated stress in the tunnel faceing. It was reported that the change of settlement on the top of tunnel becomes about 40% of the total expected settlement before tunnel faceing reaches tunnel gauging point, and 60% of the total expected settlement while tunnel facing passes tunnel gauging point and takes a distance about tunnel diameter. With the aid of the SPRG technique the control range of displacement and stress of the ground in the vicinity could be reached up to tunnel top, namely depth ratio from 0.38 to 0.83 or 2D(D : tunnel diameter) before the tunnel facing, and about 20% of settlement control in this particular case was possible.

  • So far, the grouting using pressure injection has been extensively used to avoid adverse effects such as soil disturbance. Whereas, the pressure injection to the limitations of the diffusion range, so that the kinks would last injection of cement particles by introducing a frequency oscillation effect improved injection method have been recently developed. In this study, a pilot test was performed to compare injection effects of the both methods. The injections using both methods were tested on the embankment which consists of core clay and weathered soil. Subsequently, the injected volume, SPT N values, in-situ permeability and electrical resistivity were measured to compare their effects. The vibration method showed more effective permeation comparing with the pressure method. Also, it showed more homogeneously improved ground than the existing method. For SPT results, the vibration method presented increase of mean N value as much as 17.4 % comparing with the conventional method. Higher electrical resistivity was presented in case of injecting with vibration method and it indicated the injection was extensively completed. Finally, it is expected that the economic feasibility will be improved by decrease of drilling spacing, when the existing method is replaced with vibration method.

  • The differential settlement may be generated by the variation of stresses caused by the soft ground or ground water. The cracks are usually created when the structures are leaned or deformed due to the differential settlement. A grouting method has been mainly used till now to improve the bearing capacity of the ground when the foundation of the structure is deformed by differential settlements. However, when this method is used, it takes too long time to obtain the required strength and the period of the reinforcement effect is not long enough. The advantage of GPCON injection method is to have good mechanical properties and durability, and easy construction. In addition, the GPCON method rapidly fills up the void in soils by injecting some materials into underground and also obtain the increase of bearing and shearing forces due to the expansion. In this paper the restoration capability of the foundation settlement of railway and subway subjected to cyclic loading is analytically and experimentally evaluated using the high density rapidly expansion GPCON in order to investigate the types of deformations and vibrational characteristics.

  • In the present paper, a numerical study was carried out for a reasonable and realistic evaluation of tension loads in piles during deep excavation in Singapore soft soil applying pile-plugged jet grouted slab. Based on 2-dimensional finite element analyses using linear elastic-perfectly plastic soil model obeying Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, effects of pile-plugged jet grouted slab on the stability during excavation were examined, and a parametric study was also conducted to investigate critical influencing parameters in the estimation of reliable pile tension loads. Finally, based on the Modified Cam-Clay model, pile tension loads were estimated by considering on-going consolidation state of the Singapore clay deposit and the range of critical parameters observed during laboratory tests.

  • Limestone-based cement has been well utilized as a construction material throughout the world, but as civil and architectural development accelerates, limestone will gradually be depleted. The use of cement, the main material for civil engineering and construction, is rapidly increasing in modern times, and the depletion of high-quality limestone resources will be greater than expected in the future. Therefore, if existing resources can be used as construction materials to replace cement based on accumulated technology, the depleting limestone resources can be utilized for a longer period of time. In order to determine whether Hwang-toh, which forms about 10% of the surface layer of Korea's terrain, can be partially utilized as a construction material, this study aims to develop a Hwang-toh accelerator agent and prove whether it can be applied to the field through indoor tests.

  • This study is for the quality improvement of water-sealing & reinforcement grouting in tunnel of the construction of the underground transportation network underneath the city. Existing tunnel grouting process did not technically utilize P~q~t charts fully. It is due to the absence of technical methods to decide how P~q~t charts change in the presence of trouble and what the change represents in grouting. There were no standards to decide which chart pattern represents which ground characteristics, how to categorize ground types, and how to take measures according to the standards. This paper studies on the grouting type, ground characteristics, ground type categorizing method, and countermeasures for both general and algorithm-processed grouting in soil and rock layer to address the aforementioned problems. Newly improved P~q~t charts from grouting in soil was categorized into six different types. Different characteristics and categorization method was developed for each type. Countermeasures for each type of grouting process were developed so that on-site application can be readily available. Improved P~q~t charts for rock layer also have six different types of grouting. Each type was given the countermeasures for rock layer grouting process for easier applications. Therefore, it is expected to be used through out the entire process of grouting from preparation to the last report of the water-sealing & reinforcement grouting in tunnel of the construction of the underground transportation network underneath the city.

  • Recently, underground spaces have been developed variously due to the concentration of the building structure in downtown area and reconstruction of the apartment. However, various problems such as differential settlement are occurring in the waterproof and reinforcement construction. In grouting method, which is frequently used for the ground reinforcement, quality control was performed by measuring the injection quantity of grouting materials and performing laboratory tests using boring samples, but it is difficult to determine whether the ground reinforcement has been performed properly during the construction stage. In order to solve this problem, a research is needed to carry out quality control by measuring electric resistivity after grouting is performed using grouting materials mixed with conductive materials. In this research, as a basic study of the new grouting method using conductive materials, uniaxial compression tests were performed using cement specimen with 0, 3, 5, 7% of carbon fiber to evaluate the effect of conductive material on the performance of grouting material. Based on the test results, the uniaxial compressive strength is increased with the mixed proportion of the carbon fiber increase. Furthermore, the carbon fiber can also affect on the early-strength of the grouting materials.
