  • This paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of light-weighted soils (LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged clays and cement by using both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. The mechanical characteristics of the compressive strength of LWS are analysed with varying initial water contents of dredged clays, EPS ratio, cement ratio, and curing stress. In the triaxial compression state, it is found that the compressive strength of LWS containing EPS is independent on the effective confined stress. As the EPS ratio decreases($A_E$<2%) and cement ratio increases($A_c$>2%), the behavior characteristics of triaxial compressive strength-strain relationship is similar to that of cemented soil which decreases rapidly in compressive strength after ultimate compressive strength. For the applications of LWS to ground improvements which require the compressive strength of up to 200kPa, the optimized EPS ratio and initial water content of dredged clay are estimated to be 3~4% and 165~175%, respectively. Also, the ultimate compressive strength under both triaxial test and uniaxial compression states are almost constant for a cement ratio of up to 2% and then critical cement ratio of this LWS shall be 2%.

  • Soilcrete has been a traditional material for pavement and soft ground improvement techniques. However, since the durability is not excellent and the quality is not consistent, it has not been used for various purposes up to date. However, with the increase of naturally oriented needs for light traffic roads such as pedestrian roads of garden, golf courses and sidewalks, the cases of the high strength soilcrete paving have been increased lately. This study aims at making a reference table of mix design in accordance with the required design specifications fur the high strength soilcrete admixtured with the pozzolanic cement by using a statistical experimental method. The treated soil is the clay which is widely found in Korea. As the results of this study, we could derive an effective reference mix design table for the clay treated with the pozzolanic cement stabilizer in accordance with the compressive strength of $50~150kg/cm^2$ soilcrete.

  • In the case of underground power utilities pipe such as circular pipe, the most difficult problem is low compaction efficiency of the bottom of pipe inducing the failure of utilities. To overcome this problem, various studies have been performed and one of these is CLSM(Controlled Low Strength Materials) accelerated flow ability. But underground power utilities pipe backfill materials is also needed to have good thermal property that can dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. So, in this study, we performed thermal resistancy test for various materials such as sand, weathered soil, clay and mixed soil to analyze the thermal characteristics of CLSM(Controlled Low Strength Materials) with accelerated flow ability for various conditions(water content, unit weight, void ratio, curing time) and to evaluate the applicability for backfill material of underground power utilities pipe. The test results of 16 specimens for thermal resistancy test showed good thermal property that maintained below $85^{\circ}C\;cm/W$.

  • The performance of the improved soil against liquefaction depends upon the chemical density, and it has been decided on the basis of the unconfined compressive strength of the improved soil up to date. On the other hand, several authors have proposed that the stiffness degradation could be treated as the clue for the judgment of the possibility of liquefaction. In this study, therefore, the stiffness degradation of the improved soil was estimated as the resistance against liquefaction by using the strain controlled cyclic triaxial test equipment. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the chemically treated sand can resist against the liquefaction in aspect of the reduction in effective stress and in the stiffness. Furthermore, even in the case of low chemical density, such as 2% in this study, has enough liquefaction resistance when compared with the 5~6% which often used in practical design. Considering this fact, the design of chemical density based on the unconfined strength can lead the overestimation in chemical density, and chemical density can be reduced when considering the stiffness reduction shown in this study.

  • This study carried out fundamental study on the forest road pavement method of cementing the ground using the compaction equipment after laying by mixing with eco-friendly stabilizer, natural soil and water. Target strength of pavement was set to 2.0MPa and the specimen was produced per mixing ratio of cement, kinds of natural soil and curing period to evaluate the durability and unconfined compressive strength. Unconfined compressive strength test was conducted to compare strength by producing the test specimen mixing environment-friendly cement as well as the test specimen mixing cement with the same mixing ratio. To evaluate the durability, surface abrasion test and water flow resistance test were conducted. In addition, SB and GB tests were conducted using iron marble and golf ball to evaluate the walking satisfaction since it can be used by visitors due to the feature of forest road.

  • The demand for environmental consideration is on the increase in civil engineering. This study focuses on the development of technology to reduce the use of carbonate cement and improve its performance by using a silicate mineral and hardening agents, and presents the test results for the demonstrative evaluation of the properties of the raw material. Highly active feldspar was used as a binder to augment the bonding of the carbonate cement, and their change in strength was observed after test piece construction with the addition of soluble hardening agent. The uniaxial compression strength of the test piece of the general Portland cement with the addition of 0.5% soluble hardening agent, showed an increase by 33% and that of the test piece of cement with the addition of 70% substituted with feldspar increased by 28%. The strength of viscous soil; classified as soft ground, showed an increase of a maximum of 1.7 times when it was mixed with cement and solidifier depending on the curing period. These tests confirmed that a soluble solidifier is effective for improving the strength of a cement binder and that the highly active feldspar can be used as a binder.

  • In period of rapid economic development, as doing river conservation work by using harmful materials environmental pollution has adversely effected humans, animals and plants frequently. For recovery of environmental pollution it needs a lot of time and cost. Therefore, in this study, in order to take an environment-friendly method which is also economical and durable both results of the laboratory model test and field test were compared and analyzed. According to the results of the laboratory model test, those methods such as concrete paving, asphalt paving, bentonite mat, stabilized soil method and mixed soil method have small amount of seepage, but on the other hand compaction soil, grassland and permeable materials have considerable amount of seepage. The results of field test show a similar tendency with laboratory test and have been satisfied to assess standard of domestic water permeability below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ and unconfined compressive strength is also than 1.0MPa so it has been satisfied about standard. In conclusion, as compaction rate increased, as unconfined compression strength increased and coefficient of permeability decreased.

  • Due to population growth and industrial development, the amount of industrial waste is increasing every year. In particular, in a thermal power plant using finely divided coal, a large amount of coal ash is generated after combustion of the coal. Among them, fly ash is recycled as a raw material for cement production and concrete admixture, but about 20% is not utilized and is landfilled. Due to the continuous reclamation of such a large amount of coal ash, it is required to find a correct treatment and recycling plan for the coal ash due to problems of saturation of the landfill site and environmental damage such as soil and water pollution. In recent years, the use of a fluid embankment material that can exhibit an appropriate strength without requiring a compaction operation is increasing. The fluid embankment material is a stable treated soil formed by mixing solidifying materials such as water and cement with soil, which is the main material, and has high fluidity before hardening, so compaction work is not required. In addition, after hardening, it is used for backfilling or filling in places where compaction is difficult because higher strength and earth pressure reduction effect can be obtained compared to general soil. In this study, the possibility of use of fluidized soil using high water content cohesive soil and coal ash is considered. And it is intended to examine the flow characteristics, strength, and bearing capacity characteristics of the material, and to investigate the effect of reducing the earth pressure when applied to an underground burial.

  • The authors selected the modified soil method, and then performed the geotechnical and environmental laboratory test, and evaluated whether the modified soil liner could be accepted as a barrier layer in landfill. Unlike the results of the natural soil(CL), those of the hydraulic conductivity test of stabilized soil met the standard value. According to these results, the optimal mixing ratio of a mixture(cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent) was 90 : 60 : 1 with mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, and it was possible to use poor quality bentonite. B\circled2 because of a little difference from results with high quality bentonite. B\circled1. The Cation Exchange Capacity(CEC) of the modified soil was increased about 1.5 times compared with the natural soil; however. the change of CEC with a sort of additives was not detected. In order to observe the change of the chemical components and crystal structures, the natural and the modified soils with the sorts of additives were measured by the XRF(X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometer) and SEM, but there was no significant change. The artificial leachate with the heavy meals ($Pb^{2+}$ , $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$ Zn$^{2+}$ 100mg/L) was passed through the natural soil and modified soils in columns. In the natural soil, Cd$^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were identified, simultaneously the pH of outflow was lower, and then came to the breakthrough point. The removal efficiency of the natural soil was showed in order of following : $Pb^{2+}$$Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ On the other hand, modified soils were not showed the breakthrough condition like the result of the natural soil. The modified soil with the lower quality bentonite, B\circled2(column3) was more stable with respect to chemical attack than that with the higher bentonite, B\circled1(column2) because the change range of outflow pH in columns was less than that of outflow pH in column2. In addition, the case of adding the stabilizing agent(column4) was markedly showed the phenomena.ena.

  • In order to examine strength properties depended on climate changes of solidified soil amended by porosity silica which enhance harms of cement, this study conducts a wetting and drying repetition test and then, attempts to verify strength properties before and after solidified soil gets environmental influence. Test pieces for the unconfined compression test changed the mixing ratio of solidified soil compared to mixed soil weigh to 5 %, 10 % and 15 %. For each step, it was created by mixing 0.5 %, 1.0 % and 1.5 % of wood chips, and curing period for 7, 14, and 28 days. Then, the wetting and drying repetition process was repeated 0, 3, 6, and 12 cycles to analyze mechanical properties. To also evaluate changes of relative dynamic elastic modulus before and after the wetting and drying, dynamic elastic modulus tests were conducted when each cycle was completed.
