  • A wireless passive sensor network is a network which, by letting separate RF sources supply energy to sensor nodes, is able to live an eternal life without batteries. Against expectations about an eternal life, however, a wireless passive sensor network still has many problems; scarcity of energy, non-simultaneity of energy reception and data transmission and inefficiency in resource allocation. In this paper, we focus on a wireless passive sensor network providing a packet service which is tolerable to packet losses but requires timely delivery of packets. Perceiving the practical constraints, we then consider a contending-type MAC scheme, rooted in framed and slotted ALOHA, for supporting many sensor nodes to deliver packets to a sink node. Next, we investigate the network-wide throughput achieved by the MAC scheme when the packets transmitted by geographically scattered sensor nodes experience path losses hence capture phenomena. Especially, we derive an exact formula of network-wide throughput in a closed form when 2 sensor nodes reside in the network. By controlling design parameters, we finally optimize the contending-type MAC scheme as to attain the maximum network-wide throughput.

  • Recently, with the development of wireless communications and GIS, interest about mobile computing is rising. In this case, the GIS needs to be placed in a constricted environment than the environment of server computing. For this reason large amounts of spatial data must be compressed into the mobile device. The compression technique of the spatial data is difficult and must be processed in the correct order because the size of the data is unpredictable. Therefore, in this paper, the cell-based compression technique of the spatial data for mobile GIS is presented. This paper includes the process of transformation of spatial data from a certain server to a mobile device by cell-based compression technique. In this paper, the cell-based compression technique of the spatial data has been proven practically efficient.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze industrial and innovation networks of long-live area of Honam Region and to suggest a policy direction for regional development of rural areas where have been neglected in the knowledge-based information society. Four counties (Sunchang, Damyang, Gokseong, and Gurye) in the Southwestern region of Korea are regarded as long-live belt of Korea. Production and innovation networks :Ire analyzed based on intensive surveys of firms in the belt. Major findings from the surveys are as follows. First, there are considerably strong local networks of production firms in terms of supply of input materials and labor. There are strong backward industrial linkages of the production firms with agricultural activities and considerable forward linkages with tourism industry. In addition, Internet is becoming a useful tool for sales of the new products. Second, the analysis of the innovation networks in the long-live area suggests the development of 'virtual innovation cluster' in the era of knowledge-based information society. The results imply that this innovation networks can be developed as a virtual innovation cluster in the rural areas, which can be the basis for the development of rural innovation systems.

  • So how can we develop balanced growth in our country? The national development policy of our hovemment over the past 30 years has lead to the corpulence of Seoul at the expense of the provinces. Now ironically there are policy measures introduced to control the over-expansion of Seoul. Yet the current hardware stategies to control the center requires an additional sofware stategy to create a nationwide balance for development. The Regional Elite Quota System is one such sofware stategy which can adjust the unbalanced distribution of gifted student across the national university deucation system. One obvious solution that should be utillzed is the incredible enthusiasm for high education that exists in this country, perhaps the highest in the world. This has been the backbone of our national development and should be hamessed as a catalyst to produce more balanced national growth.

  • This study aims to analyze a creative city development case of the Nantes City in France focused on vitalizing creativity by urban regeneration and to get some policy implications through reflecting on process, governance and performance of the Nantes case. The Nantes City tried to overcome its regional economic depression caused by closing shipyard through its creative city program. The Nantes creative city program has been maintained for 20 years, which succeeded in both transforming economic structure of the Nantes city and improving the image of it. As a result, the Nantes city is regarded as a best city for living in France. It established own city model by participating in European projects, referring to cases of other cities and adopting specialists' views. In the process of creative city, the Nantes distinguished itself from other cities in sizes and circumstances and devoted itself to interactions between the city and culture projects, focused on clear objectives and dynamic co-works. In addition, the Nantes changed creatively buildings and spaces to regenerate deserted regions, and established some high valueadded creative industry on the basis of historic and cultural resources.

  • Data grid shares distributed large data via wide-band network. Such grid environment consumes much time for large data transmission. Because it is implemented on internet as physical network. Many replication strategies were proposed for solving this problem, but they are not optimal in real Data grid environments. Because they were proposed that based on logical topology without consideration of real internet architecture. Grid data access time is largely influenced by internet architecture as physical network of Data grid. In this paper, we propose a new data replication strategy RSIA(Replication Strategy based on Internet Architecture) based on internet architecture. The RSIA places replicas considering structural hierarchy in each element of internet, and avoid the performance bottlenecks to reduce system performance degradation when a data transfer. Through simulation, we show that the proposed RSIA data replication strategy improves the performance of Data Grid environment compared with previous strategies.

  • Many of the wells which were constructed to use ground water resource are abandoned and not managed efficiently after its use. And a variety of heavy metals and organic compounds are released from the abandoned wells and this can cause ground water pollution. Therefore in this paper implemented to monitor locational information drill holes and underground water sensing information on real time basis using u-GIS environment to combined ubiquitous sensor node and GIS technology to improve these problems. In addition, this system suggests using system by UML 2.0 by analyzing variety requirement of user and between system internal modules interaction and data flow. It provides graphical user interfaces (GUI) to system users to monitor water-well related property information and its managements for each water-well at remote site by variety platform by GIS map and web environment and mobile device based on smart phone.

  • Workflow is defined as the automation of a business process, and consists of interrelated workflow tasks. Because many modem business processes nay involve activities that are geographically distributed between different departments or organizations, workflow inherently has the characteristics of distribution. In distributed workflow systems, each workflow task performs its assigned role by utilizing information resources placed at some hosts, and then transmits workflow execution control to the next tasks in a workflow definition. Hence, it is very important to appropriately allocate workflow tasks to hosts for high performance workflow processing. In this paper, we propose a multilevel workflow graph partitioning scheme for efficient placement of workflow tasks. This method can improve the performance of workflow processing by minimizing the remote communication costs occurred during workflow execution.

  • Recent advances of technologies make easy sharing various information and utilizing system resources on the Internet. Especially, code migration using applets of Java supports the distribution of programs on the web environment, and also browsers executing the applets guarantee the reliability of a migrated codes. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a web-based parallel processing system, which distributes migratable codes of a large job, makes the distributed codes to execute in parallel, and controls and gathers the results of each execution. The hosts participate in the computation reside on the Internet, spreaded out geographically, and the heterogeneity and the variability among them are severe. Thus, task allocation considering the performance differences and the adaptability to the severe variability are necessary. We present an adaptive task allocation algorithm applied to our system and the performance evaluation.

  • As Information Technology developed, Information requirement has been went higher. In the field of GIS(Geographic Information System) more information is processed more quickly and accurately. Especially, quick analysis of forest fire information (topography, ignition point, weather condition, etc.) over a wide area is essential in order to minimize victim, environmental damage, and economical damage, decide course of evacuating, estimate a fire spread course, and attack resource arrangement. We determined a fire spread distance at each unit time through an experiment with various slope degrees and distinction of flat, upslope and downslope. For the tests on the upslope, as the slope increased, the rate of spread increased. On the downslope in contrast with the upslope, as the slope increased, the rate of spread decreased. We analyzed a spread rate of forest fire on each slope as the method classified upslope(+) and downslope(-) using the results obtained from the experiment. Consequently, the proposed method is able to be used to effectively support the attack of forest fire by providing accurate predictions of fire spread.
