Optimal Design of Gerotor with Combined Profiles (Three-Ellipse and Ellipse-Involute-Ellipse) Using Rotation and Translation Algorithm (회전이동 및 병진이동 알고리즘을 이용한 조합된 치형형상(3-타원 및 타원-인벌루트-타원)을 갖는 지로터의 최적설계)

  • Because technology of the sintering process is highly advanced, the gerotor used in the internal gear pumps of vehicles has advantages for manufacturing complex profiles and obtaining durability and minimization. However, it has been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency. The existing rotor was designed using a translation algorithm. This caused a discontinuity of the rotor profile, which had adverse effects on the performance. In this study, to improve the discontinuity of the profile, a new design program using a rotation and translation algorithm was developed, and two types of combined multiple profiles (three-ellipses and ellipse 1-involute-ellipse 2) were generated. Then, the performances (flow, flow rate, specific sliding, and pressure angle) of these profiles were calculated. On the basis of the calculation results for the performances, optimal designs of the two types were carried out and verified by comparing their performances with those of the existing rotor profiles.

  • A geortor type pump is widely used in lubrication and actuator systems. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubrication oil and power source of automatic transmission. A gerotor is a planar mechanism consist of a pair of rotor and circular tooth of stator assembly which forms a closed space. However, related industries do not have necessary technology to design and optimize the pump and paid royalties of gerotor profile on an advanced company. Also, gerotor profiles with setting design parameter have not been sufficiently analyzed from a theoretical view. Therefore, it is very difficult for designer to decide the specifications of the gerotor profiles, and calculation and fluctuation of flow rate is not yet confirmed. In this study, theoretical analyses and optimal design of the gerotor profiles have been performed numerical method by mathematical base. An automated design system of the tooth profile has been developed through MATLAB GUI Program considering various design parameters.

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has high discharge per 1 cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used for lubrication oil of engines and as a hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have recently come to the fore. It has also been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor and port shape design. In this study, to develop an optimal gerotor with a new lobe shape, 2-ellipses-combined, the equation of the lobe shape was derived, and CFD analysis results were compared for 2-ellipses with those of the previous gerotors (3-ellipses and ellipse1-involuteellipse2). A performance test for the oil pump with the optimal rotor (2-ellipses) was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from CFD analysis.

  • Gerotor pumps and motors are widely used in lubrication and hydraulic actuator systems. Compared with internal gear pumps and motors, they have many advantages. However, the gerotor profiles have not been suff'lciently analyzed theoretically. Therefore, it is very difficult for designer to decide the specifications of the gemtor profiles, and calculation of flow rate and minimum distance of clearance in the contact point of inner and outer rotor is not yet confirmed. In this paper, when we design inner and outer rotor concurently, we have analyzed the gerotor profiles and displayed the calculated results such as flow rate, minimum distance between inner and outer rotor and gerotor profiles.

  • A gerotor pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications, which are highly accepted by designers. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. However, related industries do not have necessary technology to design and optimize the pump and paid royalties of rotor profile on an advanced country. Also, gerotor pumps with unsettled design parameters have not been sufficiently analyzed from a theoretical view of design. Therefore, it is still very difficult for the pump designer and manufacturer to decide the specifications for the required gerotor pump by users. In this study, the design optimization has been carried out to determine the design parameters that maximize the specific flow rate and minimize the flow rate irregularity. Theoretical analyses and optimal design of the gerotor oil pump have been performed by mathematical base, numerical method and knowledge of kinematics. An automated design system of the tooth profile has been developed through Auto LISP language and CAD method considering various design parameters. Finally, an optimally designed model for a general type of a gerotor pump has been generated and experimentally verified for the pump performances.
