  • Small high-resolution Earth observation satellites require precise optical alignment at the submicron level. However, misalignments can occur due to the influence of external factors during the launch and operation despite the sufficient alignment processes that take place before the launch. Thus, satellites need to realign their optical elements in orbit in what is known as a refocusing process to compensate for any misalignments. Refocusing algorithms developed for satellites have only considered de-space, which is the most sensitive factor with respect to image quality. However, the existing algorithms can cause correction error when inner and external forces generate tilt amount in an optical system. The present work suggests an improved online refocusing algorithm by considering the tilting effect for application in the case of a de-spaced and tilted optical system. In addition, the algorithm is considered to be efficient in terms of time and cost because it is designed to be used as an online method that does not require ground communication.

  • We studied the source mechanisms of very-long-period event recorded at seismic station WIZ near White Island Volcano, New Zealand on August 4, 2012. Since seismic data at only one station were available, we conducted moment tensor inversion using three simplified models (explosion, crack, and pipe models). To constrain the moment tensor solution of seismic event, we computed synthetic data for each model to compare with observed data. Type and orientation for the best model is a crack at a depth of 1600 m with a dip of $80^{\circ}NE$ and a strike of $N80^{\circ}W$. We interpret that a deep explosion may have opened a crack for gases to escape, and the upward gas flow triggered the surface explosions four hours later as confirmed by a webcam. The interpretation based on moment tensor inversion is consistent with previous studies of geochemical data of the volcanic island.

  • An optical payload needs to be validated its image performance after launched into orbit. The image performance was validated by observing star because ground site contains uncertainties caused by atmosphere, time of the year, and weather. Time Delayed and Integration(TDI) technique, which is mostly used to observe the ground, is going to be used to observe the selected stars. A satellite attitude scenario was also developed to observe the selected stars. The scenario is created to enable TDI to operate. Rotation angles of optical payload are determined in order for the selected stars to properly be passed at a desired angular velocity about rotation axis. The result of this research can be utilized to validate the quality of optical payload of a satellite in orbit. In addition, a quaternion for pointing selected stars is calculated minimizing the path from a given arbitrary attitude of satellite.

  • For Earth observation, a small satellite camera has relatively weak structural stability compared to medium-sized satellite, resulting in misalignment of optical components due to severe launching and space environments. These alignment errors can deteriorate the optical performance of satellite cameras. In this study, we proposed a 3-axis focus mechanism to compensate misalignment in a small satellite camera. This mechanism consists of three piezo-electric actuators to perform x-axis and y-axis tilt with de-space compensation. Design requirements for the focus mechanism were derived from the design of the Schmidt-Cassegrain target optical system. To compensate the misalignment of the secondary mirror (M2), the focus mechanism was installed just behind the M2 to control the 3-axis movement of M2. In this case, flexure design with Box-Behnken test plan was used to minimize optical degradation due to wave front error. The wave front error was analyzed using ANSYS. The fabricated focus mechanism demonstrated excellent servo performance in experiments with PID servo control.

  • MIRIS(Multi-purpose Infra-Red Imaging System) is the main payload of the STSAT-3(Korea Science and Technology Satellite. 3), which is being developed by KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Institute). EOC(Earth Observation Camera), which is one of two infrared cameras in MIRIS, is the camera for observing infrared rays from the Earth in the range of $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$. The optical system of the EOC is a Cassegrain prescription with aspheric primary and secondary mirrors, and its aperture is 100mm. A ring type flexure supports the EOC primary mirror with pre-loading in order to withstand expected load due to the shock and vibration from the launcher. Here we attempt to use the same mechanism by which a retainer supports the lens. Through opto-mechanical analysis it was confirmed that the EOC primary mirror is effectively supported.

  • The main purposes of this study are to: (1) to develop astronomy observation program based on a standardized coefficient decision program; and (2) to apply the developed program to after-school or club activities. As a first step, we analyzed activities related to astronomy in the authorized textbooks that are currently adopted in high schools. based on the analysis, we developed an astronomy observation program according to the standardized coefficient decision program, and the program was applied to students' astronomical observations as part of the club activities. Specifically, this program used a 102 mm refracting telescope and digital camera. we took into account the observation site's environment of the urban areas in which many school were located and then developed a the computer program for observation activities. The results of this study are as follows. First, the current astronomical education in schools was based off of the textbooks. Specifically, it was mostly about analyzing the materials and making simulated experiments. Second, most schools participated in this study were located in urban areas where students had more difficulty in observation than in rural areas. Third, an exemplary method was investigated in order to make an astronomical observation efficiently in urban areas with the existing devices. In addition, the standardized coefficient decision program was developed to standardize the magnitude of stars according to the observed value. Finally, based on the students' observations, we found that there was no difference between the magnitude of a star in urban sites and in rural sites. The current astronomical education in schools lacks an activity of practical experiments, and many schools have not good observational sites because they are located in urban areas. However, use of this program makes it possible to collect significant data after a series of standardized corrections. In conclusion, this program not only helps schools to create an active astronomy observation activity in fields, but also promotes students to be more interested in astronomical observation through a series of field-based activities.

본 논문에서는 효율적인 위성임무계획을 위한 기상수치예보 자료를 분석하여 앞으로 발사하게 될 고해상 카메라 탑제위성인 아리랑 위성2호와 3호에 적용하고자 한다. the sufficient excess reactivity to override this poisoning must be inserted, or its concentration is decreased sufficiently when its temporary shutdown is required. • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed 6U Nano-Satellite high resolution video and image (HiREV) for the purpose of developing core technology for deep space exploration. The 6U HiREV Nano-Satellite has a mission of high-resolution image and video for earth observation, and the thermal pointing error between the lens and the camera module can occur due to the high temperature in camera module on mission mode. The thermal pointing error has a large effect on the resolution, so thermal design should solve it because the HiREV optical camera is developed based on commercial products that are the industrial level. So, when it operates in space, the thermal design is needed, because it has the best performance at room temperature. In this paper, three passive thermal designs were performed for the camera mission payload, and the thermal design was proved to be effective by performing on-orbit thermal analysis.

  • KITSAT-3, the third satellite of KITSAT series which has been developed for the last four and half years with purely Korean design and implementation technology, was launched successfully at last. All subsystems were tested and validated during the initial operation of the satellite. During the initaial operation phase, the Earth imaging camera on board KITSAT-3 acquisited several tens of scenes all over the world and transmitted the image data to ground station. The quality of images and the reliability of data transmission-reception system were tested qualititively and quantititively, respectively. In this paper, we summarize the camera, data handling, on-board memory, and image data transmission system of KITSAT-3 as well as the image receiving and archiving system in ground station. The error rate of image data transmission and reception was tested during the initial operation phase. The average data transmission error rate satisfied the initial requirement of less than 1%. The error rate will be reduced through the continuous work of test and stabilization of the ground system hardware.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for the correction of major radiometric errors shown in MEIS (Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System) images on board KITSAT-3. MEIS images contain various radiometric errors as also shown in the images obtained from other remote sensing sensors. This paper introduces the two major radiometric error sources shown in MEIS images and the corresponding correction algorithm. The proposed algorithm was integrated to an operational preprocessing software and validated by applying the algorithm to several tens of MEIS images. This algorithm will therefore applied operationally to raw MEIS images before they are distributed to users.
