Design of Multi-Finger Flick Interface for Fast File Management on Capacitive-Touch-Sensor Device (정전기식 입력 장치에서의 빠른 파일 관리를 위한 다중 손가락 튕김 인터페이스 설계)

  • Most emerging smart phones support capacitive touch sensors. It renders existing gesture-based interfaces not suitable since they were developed for the resistive touch sensors and pen-based input. Unlike the flick gestures from the existing gesture interfaces, the finger flick gesture used in this paper reduces the workload about half by selecting the target and the command to perform on the target at a single touch input. With the combination with multi-touch interface, it supports various menu commands without having to learn complex gestures, and is suitable for the touch-based devices hence it minimizes input error. This research designs and implements the multi-touch and flick interface to provide an effective file management system on the smart phones with capacitive touch input. The evaluation proves that the suggested interface is superior to the existing methods on the capacitive touch input devices.

A Study on Real Time Gaze Discrimination System using GRNN (GRNN을 이용한 실시간 시선 식별 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real-time gaze discrimination system. Unlike most of the existing gaze discrimination techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process for each person, our gaze discrimination system can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using generalized regression neural networks (GRNNS). With GRNNS, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. furthermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. To further improve the gaze estimation accuracy, we employ a reclassification scheme that deals with the classes that tend to be misclassified. This leads to a 10$\%$ improvement in classification error. The angular gaze accuracy is about $5^{circ}$horizontally and $8^{circ}$vertically. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.

Improving SVM with Second-Order Conditional MAP for Speech/Music Classification (음성/음악 분류 향상을 위한 2차 조건 사후 최대 확률기법 기반 SVM)

  • Support vector machines are well known for their outstanding performance in pattern recognition fields. One example of their applications is music/speech classification for a standardized codec such as 3GPP2 selectable mode vocoder. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme that improves the speech/music classification of support vector machines based on the second-order conditional maximum a priori. While conventional support vector machine optimization techniques apply during training phase, the proposed technique can be adopted in classification phase. In this regard, the proposed approach can be developed and employed in parallel with conventional optimizations, resulting in synergistic boost in classification performance. According to experimental results, the proposed algorithm shows its compatibility and potential for improving the performance of support vector machines.

Inference of Korean Public Sentiment from Online News (온라인 뉴스에 대한 한국 대중의 감정 예측)

  • Online news has replaced the traditional newspaper and has brought about a profound transformation in the way we access and share information. News websites have had the ability for users to post comments for quite some time, and some have also begun to crowdsource reactions to news articles. The field of sentiment analysis seeks to computationally model the emotions and reactions experienced when presented with text. In this work, we analyze more than 100,000 news articles over ten categories with five user-generated emotional annotations to determine whether or not these reactions have a mathematical correlation to the news body text and propose a simple sentiment analysis algorithm that requires minimal preprocessing and no machine learning. We show that it is effective even for a morphologically complex language like Korean.

  • Support vector machines have been extensively studied and utilized in pattern recognition area for years. One of interesting applications of this technique is music/speech classification for a standardized codec such as 3GPP2 selectable mode vocoder. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that improves the speech/music classification of support vector machines. While conventional support vector machine optimization techniques apply during training phase, the proposed technique can be adopted in classification phase. In this regard, the proposed approach can be developed and employed in parallel with conventional optimizations, resulting in synergistic boost in classification performance. We first analyze the impact of kernel width parameter on the classifications made by support vector machines. From this analysis, we observe that we can fine-tune outputs of support vector machines with the kernel width parameter. To make the most of this capability, we identify strong correlation among neighboring input frames, and use this correlation information as a guide to adjusting kernel width parameter. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm is found to have potential for improving the performance of support vector machines.

Composition and Realization of Korean Culture Liberal Arts Subjects for International Students (외국인 유학생을 위한 한국문화 교양교과목 구성과 실제)

  • In this paper it is considered that international students who are studying at Korean universities have difficulty in completing their studies while adjusting to Korean university life. The reason for this is that most international students enter university but they are lack of liberal arts knowledge such as Korean language skills and foundation studies necessary for their major studies. However, most universities focus on teaching Korean language as a liberal arts course for international students. Therefore It suggests that the most important and urgent required is for international students to improve their liberal arts knowledge as well as their Korean language skills. Furthermore, this paper argues order for international students who do not have enough liberal arts such as Korean language proficiency or basic science to study successfully, a systematic liberal arts curriculum and teaching methods for international students should be presented and applied in the field. Accordingly, this paper shows an example of the class operated by applying the knowledge-based Korean language teaching method to the cultural class, which is a dedicated subjects for international students, and proved its effectiveness.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive resource self-management system that collects system resources, user information, and usage patterns as context information for utilization in self-configuration. This system ill ease the system maintenance burden on users by automation of large part of configuration tasks such as install, reconfiguration and update, and will also decrease cost and errors. Working from the gathered context information, this system allows users to select appropriate components and install them for user's system context. This also offers a more personalized configuration setting by using user's existing application setting and usage pattern. To avoid the overload on central server to transfer and manage related files, we employ Peer-to-Peer method. h prototype was developed to evaluate the system and a comparison study with the conventional methods of manual configuration and MS-IBM systems was conducted to validate the proposed system in terms of functional capacity, install time and etc.

  • Mathematics curriculum according to 2009 Revised National Curriculum suggests that school mathematics must cultivate interest and curiosity about mathematics in addition to creative thinking ability of students, and ability and attitude of observing and analyzing many things happening around. Centroid of a triangle in 2007 Revised National Curriculum is defined as 'an intersection point of three median lines of a triangle' and it has been instructed focusing on proof study that uses characteristic of parallel lines and similarity of a triangle. This could not teach by focusing on the centroid itself and there is a problem of planting a miss concept to students. And therefore this writing suggests centroid must be taught according to its essence that centroid is 'a dot that forms equilibrium', and a justification method about this could be different.

Education for Mathematics Teachers and Educational Using of Socrates' Method (수학 교사 교육과 산파법의 교육적 적용)

  • This study was conducted in 2008 with 80 in-service mathematics teachers. We took a course that was consisted of a lecture and a practice on Socrates' method. In our study, mathematics teachers conducted making a teaching plan by using Socrates' method. But we became know that we need to offer concrete ideas or examples for mathematics teachers in order to apply Socrates' method effectively. Therefore we tried to search for educational methods in using Socrates' method to teach school mathematics. After investigating of preceding researches, we selected some examples. On the basis of these examples, we suggested concrete methods in using Socrates' method. That is as follows. Socrates' method need to be used in the context mathematical problem solving. Socrates' method can be applied in the process of overcoming cognitive obstacles. A question in using Socrates' method have to guide mathematical thinking (or attitude). When we use Socrates' method in the teaching of a proof, student need to have an opportunity to guess the conclusion of a proposition. The process of reflection revision-improvement can be connected to using Socrates' method.

Estimating Human Size in 2D Image for Improvement of Detection Speed in Indoor Environments (실내 환경에서 검출 속도 개선을 위한 2D 영상에서의 사람 크기 예측)

  • The performance of human detection system is affected by camera location and view angle. In 2D image acquired from such camera settings, humans are displayed in different sizes. Detecting all the humans with diverse sizes poses a difficulty in realizing a real-time system. However, if the size of a human in an image can be predicted, the processing time of human detection would be greatly reduced. In this paper, we propose a method that estimates human size by constructing an indoor scene in 3D space. Since the human has constant size everywhere in 3D space, it is possible to estimate accurate human size in 2D image by projecting 3D human into the image space. Experimental results validate that a human size can be predicted from the proposed method and that machine-learning based detection methods can yield the reduction of the processing time.
