  • This study was conducted to examine the readiness for death and death anxiety among hospitalized cancer patients. A convenience sample of 183 cancer patients admitted to four hospitals in Korea was recruited for this study. Data were collected in 2010. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The mean scores of readiness for death and death anxiety were 1.99(${\pm}0.69$) and 2.21(${\pm}0.59$) out of 4, respectively. 'Psychological readiness' showed the highest mean score among the death anxiety domains, and 'dying process' had the highest mean score among the death anxiety domains. No statistically significant correlation was found between readiness for death and death anxiety. Readiness for death was statistically significantly different according to age, afterlife beliefs, stage of cancer, duration of disease, and number of symptoms. Death anxiety showed significant difference according to faith in God and afterlife beliefs. Distress in the process of dying needs to be managed for cancer patients and spiritual interventions should be considered to relieve death anxiety.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the severity, depression and to identify factors influencing quality of sleep in Restless Legs Syndrome(RLS) patients. A total of 303 consecutive RLS patients were assessed by self questionnaires and participant's medical records were reviewed for obtaining their clinical information. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. The quality of sleep was positively correlated with symptoms(r=. 21, p<.001) and depression(r=. 37, p<.001). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that significant variables influencing the quality of sleep were depression(${\beta}=.35$, p<.001), age(${\beta}=.21$, p<.001), and severity(${\beta}=.15$, p=.005). The explanation power of this regression model was 21.0% and it was statistically significant. As a result, to improve their sleep quality, the nursing interventions are required for RLS patients who have the depression, age, and severity.

  • This study was to explore experiences of Female Ex-offender's re-entry process to socialization. For this, 9 female ex-offenders who receive housing support by the Korea Rehabilitation Agency were interviewed and the Strauss and Corbin's ground theory is used to approach to the data. In open coding, 88 concepts, 33 subcategories, and 15categories emerged from the data. In axial coding, central phenomenon were 'indulge in self pity', 'being isolated female ex-offender'. Intervention condition was 'human cooperation system'. Strategies were 'increase the receptiveness', 'establish the foundation'. Consequences were 'finding the stability in the life', 'changing the life direction'. In selective coding, main theme was 'overcome social stigma through changing life-direction and acclimate to society', and four phases were derived from the data. Based upon this results outcome, need of female ex-offender in the process of social transition and their experience were discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of self efficacy and self leadership on stress in adolescents. Methods: Data were collected from 722 adolescents and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS 20.0 program. Results: Stress differed according to gender, grade, economic level. Self efficacy and self leadership had a significant negative correlation with stress. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed self efficacy(general self efficacy), self leadership(cognitive strategies), gender(female), grade(high school) explained 32.5% of the total variance in stress. The findings indicate that self efficacy and self leadership had an influence on stress. Conclusions: The results of this study offer basic data for the development of intervention programs to prevent adolescents stress.

  • We systematically reviewed the studies administering the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) or the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) in South Korea. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a literature search of 4 electronic databases was conducted, yielding 10 relevant articles. All studies used a cross-sectional design and the majority of the studies (n = 7; 70%) used the total scores of the BIPQ. The factors related to participants' illness perceptions were coping strategies or health outcomes such as depression, quality of life, self-care, and social support; however, findings suggested that such factors varied across the studies. This review highlights the need for using each dimension of illness perception to examine which perceptions are most strongly related to outcomes, and need for considering an individual's illness perceptions when developing biobehavioral interventions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of depression, self-esteem and daily life ability on suicidal ideation in elderly people with chronic illness. The subjects were 170 outpatients and inpatients in a general hospital in D city. After conducting questionnaires for data collection, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed and analyzed using SPSS 12.0 / win program. The results showed that suicidal ideation was influenced by gender, health status, chronic disease diagnosis, and experience of suicide attempt, with a positive correlation with depression and a negative correlation with daily life ability. The suicide attempt experience, depression, self-esteem and daily living ability showed 50.8% explanatory power against suicidal ideation. In order to reduce suicidal ideation, it is necessary to reduce suicidal ideation of elderly people with chronic diseases by managing an intervention program that reduces depression and improves daily life ability.
