  • The hollow slab has advantages that its self-weight does not greatly increase notwithstanding the increase of its thickness and its flexural performance does not significantly degrade in comparison with general reinforced concrete slab. However, the utilization of the hollow slab is currently being underestimated in spite of structural system that enables economic design of building and construction of eco-friendly structure. the significant reasons for this situation is that the method of structural analysis and design for hollow slab is not generalized. In this study, to consider practical compressive zone of hollow slab, the equation for its flexural strength is proposed by the volume of compressive stress block according to neutral axis location in hollow section assumed. Existing estimation method of flexural strength of hollow slab considering only compressive zone above hollow part is evaluated as the most conservative method and the method estimating flexural strength by two alternative cross-section of hollow slab is evaluated as more practical method.

  • This research was conducted to determine the optimum lifting positions on precast concrete slabs for precast concrete pavement construction, based on the analysis of concrete stress distribution under various lifting conditions. To analyze stresses in concrete slabs, the finite element method was implemented and a numerical model of the precast slab that was going to be used in the experimental construction was developed. Changes in the stress distribution due to the lifting angle were investigated because slab lifting is not always performed in the perpendicular direction to the slab surface. In addition, the effect of the lifting level, the distance between the neutral axis of the slab and the lifting point, on the stress distribution was investigated since the lifting point is not always at the neutral axis of the slab. To consider the actual steel design of the precast slab, the effect of the reinforcement near the lifting point was also investigated. From this study, the optimum lifting positions of the precast slabs were determined according to the lifting angle and level, and the results were compared with the lifting positions used in the PCI standards.

  • The present study simplified the moment-curvature relationship to straightforwardly determine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. For the idealized column section, moments and neutral axis depths at different stages(first flexural crack, yielding of tensile reinforcing bar, maximum strength, and 80% of the maximum strength at the descending branch) were derived on the basis of the equilibrium condition of forces and compatibility condition. Concrete strains at the extreme compression fiber beyond the maximum strength were determined using the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, proposed by Kim et al. The lateral load-displacement curves converted from the simplified moment-curvature relationship of columns are well consistent with test results obtained from column specimens under various parameters. The moments and the corresponding neutral axis depth at different stages were formulated as a function of longitudinal reinforcement and transverse reinforcement indices and/or applied axial load index. Overall, curvature ductility of columns was significantly affected by the axial load level as well as concrete compressive strength and the amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcing bars.

  • Precise estimation f a structure's dynamic characteristics is indispensable for ensuring stable dynamic response during life time especially for the structures which can experience resonance such as railway bridges. Especially, concrete track can change the modal properties of the railway bridge, through the contribution of stiffness as well as mass effects, generally only the mass effect is considered in dynamic analysis of the railway bridge. In this paper, static and dynamic behaviors of railway bridge with concrete track were investigated through experimental study. Also, numerical analysis was performed about considering only mass of concrete track and together with stiffness and mass of concrete track. These were compared with experiment value. Numerical analysis value considering together with stiffness and mass of concrete track was similar experiment value. Therefore, when dynamic analysis of railway bridge with concrete track is performed, the contribution of stiffness as well as mass effects for concrete track is considered.

  • Purpose: This study aims to develop brand new bolt fastening type of seismic retrofit using high tensile alloy materials for existing reinforced concrete columns. Method: A T-type cross-sectional seismic retrofit made of SUS304 and SS275, and the high-tensile bolt of SCM435 was analyzed for the effect of material properties on seismic performance through bending test. Result: The experiment using SUS304 shows a 7% higher maximum strength and 22% higher yield strength and shows a higher compressive stress of 360MPa. In addition, the change in the neutral axis is also smaller. Conclusion: Seismic retrofit using SUS304 is considered to be better in terms of yield strength, tensile strength, neutral axis change, and ductility, and it is considered necessary to experiment with RC column real experiments in future studies.

  • In the previous experimental study, it is verified that the ultimate strain of concrete (${\varepsilon}$$_{cu}$=0.003) and coefficient of equivalent stress block (${\beta}$$_1$) can be used for the analysis of RC beams under biaxial and uniaxial bending moment. However, the characteristics of stress distribution of non rectangular compressed area in the RC columns are different to those of rectangular compressed area. The properties of compressive stress distribution of concrete have minor effect on the pure bending moment such as beams, but for the columns subjected to combined axial load and biaxial bending moment, the properties of compressive stress distribution are influencing factors. Nevertheless, in ACI 318-99 code, the design tables for columns subjected to axial loads with bidirectional eccentricities are based on the parameters recommended for rectangular stress block(RSB) of rectangular compressed areas. In this study the characteristics of stress distribution through both angle and depth of neutral axis are observed and formulated rationally. And the modified parameters of rectangular stress block(MRSB) for non rectangular compressed area is proposed. And the computer program using MRSB for the biaxial bending analysis of RC columns is developed and the results of MRSB are compared to RSB and experimental results respectively.

  • The axial stress in rock bolt, the shear stress at the bolt-grout interface and the neutral point are analyzed to understand the mechanical behavior of rook bolt. To analyze the support effects of rock bolt in various geological conditions, numerical analyses are performed with regard to bolt spacing and bolt length in several geological conditions and tunnel sizes. Through the numerical analyses, the distributions of maximum tensile stress and shear stress are determined. And the excavation width of underground opening affects the position of the neutral point. In the circular opening supported by pattern bolting, the increase of confining pressure, the reduction of plastic zone, and that of ground displacement are determined by using the radial stress increase ratio, the plastic zone reduction ratio and the displacement reduction ratio respectively. The results of this study can be applied to a practical tunnel design through understanding of the trends of these support effects.
