In this study, the removal efficiencies of heavy metals were evaluated using cockle, abalone, and scallop shells. Cockle, abalone, and scallop are composed mainly of aragonite, aragonite, and calcite, and calcite, respectively. The specific surface area of each shell varies from 2.7241 m2/g to 4.5481 m2/g and the order of that is scallop > abalone > cockle. All shells of cockle, abalone, and scallop had no As removal effect by adsorption and precipitation as pH increased. Pb was removed by all shell samples at initial reaction. Although the removal efficiency of Cd and Zn were depending on the reaction medium, that was increased in order of scallop > abalone > cockle. Heavy metal removal efficiency tends to be slightly higher for heated samples than with the raw materials, and higher as the specific surface area is larger.

An artificial zeolite was synthesized from bituminous coal fly ash by thermo-alkali treatment, $100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ and 3.5 N NaOH solution for 24 hours, to develope new useful material in waste water treatment system. The artificial zeolite had much higher cation exchange capacity, $299cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ and lower concentration of extractable heavy metals than bituminous coal fly ash. The higher the temperature and the longer the shaking time, the more Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were sorbed chemically by the artificial zeolite. Shaking artificial zeolite and wastewater at $35^{\circ}C$ for 9 hours, the amount of sorbed heavy metals were $123.5g\;kg^{-1}$ for Zn, $164.7g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cu, $184.4g\;kg^{-1}$ for Cd and $350.6g\;kg^{-1}$ for Pb, respectively.
The objective of this study was to investigate the removal characteristics and the elimination mechanism of heavy metals in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using spherical-type porous Zeolite-StarFish ceramics (porous ZSF ceramics) packed in a continuous column reactor system. The average removal efficiencies of heavy metals in AMD were Al 98.7, As 98.7, Cd 96.0, Cu 89.1, Fe 99.5, Mn 94.4, Pb 96.3 and Zn 80.8 % during 110 days of operation time. The average removal capacity of porous ZSF ceramics for heavy metals were measured to be Al 21.76, As 1.52, Cd 1.27, Cu 3.41, Fe 44.83, Mn 3.48, Pb 2.36 and Zn $3.76mg/kg{\cdot}day$. The analysis results of mechanism using SEM, EDS and XRD exhibited that the porous ZSF ceramics could act as a multi-functional ceramics for the removal of heavy metals in AMD through the reactions of precipitation, adsorption and ion-exchange. The experimental results of column reactor system displayed that the porous ZSF ceramics would be a consistently efficient agent for the removal of heavy metals in AMD for a long term.

Treatability of heavy metals in marine sediments contaminated with mainly organic matter was investigated on the basis of washing technology using oxidizers and surfactants. Sediment samples were collected at N area which expected for remediation project of contaminated marine sediment. For additives, hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and Tween-80 were used at oxidizer and nonionic surfactant, respectively. In experiments, sediments was mixed with sea water at the ratio of 1 : 3 than $H_2O_2$ (1 M, 3 M, 4 M, 5 M) and Tween-80 (0.05%) were added. Samples were gathered at following reaction time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 min and 24 h). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) was 55.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 24 h. Hence total heavy metals were Cu 29.5%, Zn 42.3%, Cd 73.0% and bioavailable heavy metals were Cu 60.0%, Zn 77.7%, Cd 90.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 10 min. The correlations for between bioavailable metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) and TOC were significant (Cu, Zn, Cd; $r^2=0.94$, 0.85, 0.69, respectively).
The main objective of this study was to examine the removal of heavy metals from water by inflated vermiculites. The component of vermiculites was analyzed by XRF, and the concentration of metal ion was measured by ICP-AES. Serial batch kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for heavy metals in aqueous solutions. As a result, solution pH values of tests with the inflated vermiculites generally increased and then stabilized. Equilibrium pHs were generally established within 5 hrs. In addition, removal rates of inflated vermiculites were tested at the initial concentration of 3 mg/L. As a result, at equilibrium concentration, except for chromium (36.23%), Most of the heavy metals were effectively removed (96.08~98.54%). Finally, sorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The Qmax obtained from Langmuir isotherm were determined to Pb $725.4mg\;kg^{-1}$, Cd $568.8mg\;kg^{-1}$, Zn $540.2mg\;kg^{-1}$, Cu $457.2mg\;kg^{-1}$ Cr $0.9mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. The results of the study indicate that inflated vermiculites can be properly used as an adsorbent for various heavy metals because of its outstanding removal rate.

(1998, 1999). Physicochemical Properties of acid mine water of the Chonam-ri Creek and the Sagok-ri Creek in the Kwangyang Au-Ag mine area were determined using geochemical approaches. Metal contamination (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) is more serious in the Chonam-ri Creek than in the Sagok-ri Creek. However, the contents of Al and Fe is higher in the Sagok-ri Creek. Such differences between the two creeks probably reflect the abundance and composition of ore minerals. The attenuation processes for acid mine water in both creeks were investigated. In the Chonam-ri Creek, a small retention pond which contains limestone plays an important role in the removal of heavy metals by adsorption or coprecipitation due to increase of pH. The capacity of metal scavenging in this pond depends on the seasonal variation of inflow volume. Reddish yellow precipitates sampled in the Chonam-ri Creek were analyzed by XRD, SEM-EDS, EPMA, and chemical decomposition. The precipitates mainly consist of goethite and are also enriched in Al, Mn, Cu and Zn. This inditates that precipitation of goethite is important for scavenging those trace elements, possibly due to adsorption or coprecipitation. In the Sagok-ri Creek, on the other hand, hydrologic mixing of uncontaminated tributaries results in removal of heavy metals with iron hydroxides precipitation due to the pH increase. The mechanisms proposed for metal attenuation at the confluence between contaminated mine water and uncontaminated tributary water are also explained by the property-property plots.
