  • Ballast gravel in a railroad field is often polluted by grease and heavy metals. In this paper, the performances of a dry cleaning method for polluted ballast gravel in which pollutants on the gravel surface can be physically removed was extensively studied. A polluted ballast cleaning device able to shoot emery blasting media onto the surface using compressed air was prepared. Polluted ballast gravel was put into this device for cleaning, with the treatment time varied from 1 to 10 min. The cleaning efficiency of the total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals were studied. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency was 70-80% for gravels sampled from a locomotive waiting line, while it was 40-60% for gravels sampled from a turnout area. The heavy metal removal efficiency exceeded 90% for copper and lead, while it was 65-80% for nickel and zinc. This system was found to be effective for the remediation of polluted ballast gravels.

  • The ceramic balls impregnated with $20{\sim}40nm$ sized Ag colloid were examined for heavy metals absorption and antibacterial activities in the drinking water. The preparation conditions of ceramic ball that the porosity was excellent were as follows: starting material: 85 wt% $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$, binder: 5 wt% PVA and 15 wt% ${\alpha}-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$, heating temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, duration: 3 hrs. The ceramic balls obtained under these conditions showed specific surface area of $110m^2/g$, pore size of $120{\mu}m$ and porosity of 80%. Also, as the results of a performance test on a rate of adsorbing and removing heavy metals in the drinking water by using the.AAS, heavy metals such as Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu were removed to the extent that their content became 0.03mg/l or lower after 1 day and they showed an excellent bactericidal activity that all coliforms were killed after 3 hrs.

  • In this study, we have developed cation-exchange membranes (CEMs) which can efficiently separate heavy-metal ions among the cations contained in a water system. Sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) was used as a base polymer and a powdered chelating resin with strong binding ability to heavy-metal ions was added into it. In order to optimize the performance of the CEM, the content of chelating resin powder and the ion exchange capacity of SPEEK have been controlled. As a result, it was confirmed that the removal efficiency of heavy metal ion was improved by more than 20% by applying the CEM to membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI).

  • This study examined the removal rate of heavy metals from synthetic control water using red mud and lime stone. Overall, the percent of absorption obtained in this study for the red mud treatment was 94.0% ($Pb^{2+}$), 67.1% ($As^{3+}$), 37.5% ($Cu^{2+}$), and 36.6% ($Cr^{6+}$), while that of lime stone was $Pb^{2+}$ (30.8%), $Cu^{2+}$ (16.5%), $Cr^{6+}$ (11.5%), and $As^{3+}$ (8.9%). The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models, the equilibriuim adsorption of $Cr^{6+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ obeys Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ obeys only Langmuir model. The results also showed that adsorption rate slightly increased with increasing pH from 5 to 9. Interestingly, this trend is similar to results obtained as function of loading amount of red mud. Meanwhile, an unit adsorption rate was slightly decreased. For lime stone, it did not much change in adsorption as function of treatment amount. Consequently, it was concluded that the absorbents can be successfully used the removal of the heavy metals from the aqueous solutions.

  • For the reservoir sediment highly contaminated with total Cr, Pb, and Cd, the applicability of electrokinetic remediation method was evaluated. Also, BCR sequential extraction method was adopted to compare the heavy metal speciation in between before and after electrokinetic reaction that is operated under constant current condition for the sediment. After reaction, total Cr and Pb moved toward the direction of anode, while Cd tended to cathode and stayed highest in the midst of sediment specimen. From the BCR sequential extraction analysis, it was known that for total Cr and Pb the residual fraction that showed high fraction before reaction decreased and changed to the oxidation fraction. On the other hand, for Cd the fraction of exchangeable/carbonate that dominated most fractions before reaction changed to the residual and oxidation fractions.

  • An ubiquitous bacterium, Pseudomonar cepacia KH410 was isolated from fresh water plant root and identified. Adsorption of heavy metals of lead, cadmium and copper by this strain was investigated. Optimal conditions foradsorption was 1.0 dry g-biomass, at pH 4.0 and temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. Adsorption equilibrium reached max-imum after 120 min in 1000 mg/l metal solutions. The adsorption capacity (K) of lead was 5.6 times higher thancadmium and 4.0 times higher than that of copper. Adsorption of lead was applicable for Langmuir modelwhereas Freundlich model for cadmium and copper, respectively. Adsorption strength (1/n) of heavy metal ionswere in the order of lead>copper>cadmium. Uptake capacity of lead, cadmium and copper by dried cell was83.2,42.0,65.2 mg/g-biomass, respectively. Effective desorption was induced 0.1 M HCI for lead and 0.1 $HNO_3$ for cadmium and copper. Pretreatment to increase ion strength was the most effective with 0.1 M KOH.Uptake by immobilized cell was 77.8,58.5,71.2 mg/g-biomass for lead, cadmium and copper, respectively. Theimmobilized cell was more effective than ion exchange resin on removal of heavy metals in solution containinglight metals.

  • Batch experiments for the soil washing coupled with the magnetic separation process were performed to remediate the soil contaminated with metal and oil wastes. The soil was seriously contaminated by Zn and TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon), of which concentrations were 1743.3 mg/kg and 3558.9 mg/kg, respectively, and initial concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu, and TPH were higher than the 2nd SPWL (soil pollution warning limit: remediation goal). The soil washing with acidic solution was performed to remove heavy metals from the soil, but Pb and Zn concentration of the soil maintained higher than the 2nd SWPL even after the soil washing with acidic solution. The 2nd soil washing was repeated to increase the Pb and Zn removal efficiency and the Zn and Pb removal efficiencies additionally increased by only 8 % and 5 %, respectively, by the 2nd soil washing (> 2nd SPWL). The small particle separation from the soil was conducted to decrease the initial concentration of heavy metals and to increase the washing effectiveness before the soil washing and 4.1 % of the soil were separated as small particles (< 0.075 mm in diameter). The small particle separation lowered down Zn and Pb concentrations of soil to 1256.3 mg/kg (27.9 % decrease) and 325.8 mg/kg (56.3 % decrease). However, the Zn concentration of soil without small particles still was higher than the 2nd SPWL even after the soil washing, suggesting that the additional process is necessary to lower Zn concentration to below the 2nd SPWL after the treatment process. As an alternative process, the magnetic separation process was performed for the soil and 16.4 % of soil mass were removed, because the soil contamination was originated from unreasonable dumping of metal wastes. The Zn and Pb concentrations of soil were lowered down to 637.2 mg/kg (63.4 % decrease) and 139.6 mg/kg (81.5 % decrease) by the magnetic separation, which were much higher than the removal efficiency of the soil washing and the particle separation. The 1st soil washing after the magnetic separation lowered concentration of both TPH and heavy metals to below 2nd SPWL, suggesting that the soil washing conjugated with the magnetic separation can be applied for the heavy metal and TPH contaminated soil including high content of metal wastes.

  • The study was conducted for the efficient utilization of biomaterials such as Chestnut shell which was wasted tremendously as an agricultural by-products. This biomaterials were examined for their removal rate of heavy metal ions as adsorbents in wastewater by batch adsorption experiments. In this experiment, the heavy metal ions used were $\Cd^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Cr^{6+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$. The range of time for the removal rates of heavy metal ions were observed about 10 min. The range of high pH for the removal rates of $\Cd^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ ere observed 7.0-9.0. The range of high pH for the removal rate of $Cr_{6+}$ was observed 2. In the case of raw chestnut shell, the removal rates of $\Fe^{2+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were above 70 percent. The removal rates of heavy metals in formaline pretreated chestnut shells except $Cd_{2+}$ were above 50 percent and in phosphorylating chestnut shells except $Cr_{6+}$ were above 60 percent. Chestnut shells pretreated by formaline and phosphorylating were not so good enough for improvement of removal rates with pH change in mixed heavy metal solution.

  • The effect of pH on the citrate leaching behavior of heavy metal ion was investigated to develop an eco-friendly process for removing heavy metals from soil contaminated with copper, zinc, and lead. The leaching tests were performed using citrate solution with pH adjusted by mixing citric acid and sodium citrate under the following leaching conditions: particle size, under $75{\mu}m$; temperature, $50^{\circ}C$; citrate concentration, $1kmol/m^3$; pulp density, 5%; shaking speed, 100 rpm; leaching time, 1 hour. The difference of pH before and after the leaching test was not observed, and this result indicates the direct effect of hydrogen ion concentration on the leaching of metals was insignificant. The removal ratios of copper, zinc, and lead from the contaminated soil decreased with increasing pH. The thermodynamic calculation suggests that the leaching behaviors of metal ions were determined by two reactions; one is the reaction to form complex ions between heavy metal ions and citrate ion species, and the other is the reaction to form metal hydroxide between heavy metal ions and hydroxide ion.
