  • This study has been carried out to examine the feasibility of washing technique for reducing the heavy metal contamination level of tailing wastes and agricultural soil surrounding abandoned metal mines. Some organic acids with low molecular weight were used as washing solution. Initial contamination levels of copper and lead for some soil samples were found to exceed the standard levels of countermeasure and concern, and those of cadmium to approach the standard level of countermeasure. Experimental results using sequential extraction method revealed that more than half of copper and lead existing in tailing wastes are adsorbed forms available for plants. There are some proportional relationships between metal concentrations determined by using 0.1N HCI solution and those determined by sequential extractions. Citric acid was turned out to be superior to oxalic acid and acetic acid with low molecular weight in washing above three metals. When citric acid is used for washing heavy metals from soil, it is desirable to operate at pH less than 5.5 for better washing effect. Metal removal effect by citric acid solution has been proved to depend upon solution concentration and the mass ratio of solution to soil. Addition of SDS(Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) to citric acid improved the washing effect of cadmium among three metal most significantly. while copper removal did not change. Washing technique using citric acid for removal of heavy metals from agricultural soil or tailing wastes is recognized to be an effective remediation method.

  • The current study was performed to examine the agricultural suitability of the cultivated upland nearby abandoned mining areas in Korea using three different scientific risk assessment models of Korea, USA and UK. For this, three mining sites DM, MG and KS were selected among 687 abandoned mines through preliminary risk assessment. A wide range of parameters were obtained through analysis of both soil and crop samples from the selected areas for heavy metal concentration and questionnaires to the communities along with the selected mining sites. Heavy metal concentration in soil samples was lower than the values previously reported by the Ministry of Environment (ME, 2002). However, both As and Cd concentration in the soil samples exceeded the concern level for agricultural area of the Soil Environment Conservation Act. Judging from the contaminant criteria for the crops, only Zn level in pepper, soybean and corn from the mining area DM exceeded the criteria whereas As, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb did not exceed the criteria. It was demonstrated that there would be human health risk by Pb accumulated in crops from both mining areas MG and KS when estimated by the risk assessment models of Korea and USA. Against it, results of the risk assessment model of UK showed human health risk by Pb in the crops from all study areas.

  • This study is described in heavy metal pollution by the stony mountain development using field case. The heavy metal pollution is investigated for nearby area (soil and stream) of the developed stony mountain, and then the countermeasure using contamination analysis is suggested. The investigation result indicated that contamination of Sammak stream caused by the stone dust and leachate at the stony mountain development. Therefore, the heavy metal pollution is evaluated by using Pollution Index(PI). The evaluation results confirmed that the contaminated groundwater was the leading cause of the contamination in Sammak stream and nearby soil. Therefore, the Permeable Reaction Barrier(PRB), which has a environmentally-friendly reactant, should be applied to control a heavy metal of groundwater, and it will be a reasonable countermeasure.

  • Chemical analyses are generally used to assess contaminated soils and to monitor the efficiency of soil remediation. In this study, the ecotoxicological methods was suggested to evaluate soil pollution by using a battery of bioassay. Plant assay and earthworm assay were conducted to evaluate ecotoxicity o soils contaminated by heavy metals (cadmium and copper) and oil (BTEX compounds, toluene). Test plants were Zea may, Triticum aestivum, Cucumis sativus, and Sorghum bicolor. The presence of heavy metals decreased the seedling growth. Cucumis sativus and Sorghum bicolor seemed to be good indicator plants which are sensitive to heavy metal pollution as well as BTEX contamination. An earthworm bioassay was performed to predict the ecotoxicity in toluene-contaminated soils, based on a simple contact method. Perionyx excavatus was adopted as a test earthworm species, and the severity of response increased with increasing toluene concentration. The present study demonstrated that ecotoxicological methods could be a quantitative approach to evaluate contaminated soils.

  • In this study, heavy metals are removed by soil washing from soils contaminated with Cu, Zn, and Pb, whose maximum concentrations are up to 3350, 1220, and 2240 mg/kg, respectively. Through various soil washing experiments, the optimum conditions, including type and concentration of washing reagent, washing time, mixing ratio of soil and washing reagent, and stirring speed, are derived for effective removal of the heavy metals. It is found that the most effective washing reagent and its concentration are hydrochloric acid and 50 mM, respectively. The most suitable washing time is 30 minutes and the optimal mixing ratio of soil and washing reagent is 1:30 (g/mL). The removal efficiency, on the other hand, is not affected by stirring speed. The removal efficiencies of the heavy metals decrease when washing reagent is reused. Furthermore, the heavy metals are readsorbed onto soil in case of consecutive reuse of washing reagent.
