We report an easy and efficient method for separating zircon grains using a gold pan and disposable sieve together with the tap water. Samples powdered to less than $230{\mu}m$ in grain size are placed on the water-filled pan tilted at about $10^{\circ}$. The outflowing water flooded with low-density particles is screened by a ${\sim}70{\mu}m$ sieve. The most efficient rate of water outflow is estimated to be 0.1 L/sec, when the distance between the tap and the surface of water-filled pan is kept at 20-25 cm. After 20-30 minutes of water outflow, heavy mineral fractions are ready for zircon collection using a hand magnet (and heavy liquid when necessary) or simply hand-picking. This procedure is most likely applicable for the separation of other heavy minerals including monazite.
Domestic gold mine tailings, generally, contain a lot of non-metallic silica and clay minerals. These minerals can be separated from the tailings by various physical separation methods and used as raw materials for cements and ceramic products. In these physical separation procedures, metallic complex sulfides, in which Au and metallic constituents such as Pb, As and Fe were concentrated, were obtained as a by-product. These metallic constituents should be removed or separated from the by-product to extract Au efficiently. In this work, removal and separation processes of Pb, As, and Fe from the by-product were investigated. Pb was removed to under 3% by using alkaline oxidative leaching at the leaching condition of $120^{\circ}C$, 2M NaOH, 100psi $Po_2$, 250r.p.m., 4 wt.% solid and 30 min. leaching time. The leached residue was roasted and separated magnetically to obtain a non-magnetic product contained <0.2% As, <3% Fe and high concentrated Au more than 8,000 ppm.
The 242.795 nm on ICP-AES for the gold analysis was the most sensitive wavelength which was also interfered severely by the spectra of other metal ions such as manganese, chromium, cobalt, and iron. In order to analyze the gold in ore, the gold must be separated from the interfering ions. The best solvent for separation of gold in ore solution was 10 % n-hexane contained MIBK mixed solvent. The gold recovery was 97.5 % from mixed metal solution contained about 2 M $HNO_3$ and 0.5 M HCl.

Rare earth metals have been made from rare earth compounds which were prepared from rare earth ore concentrates through successive processes such as leaching(i.e. extraction of rare earth elements to liquid media), separation, purification, precipitation. Here, process for treating monazite and bastnasite ore concentrates were briefly reviewed, and metallothermic reduction and fused salt electrolysis methods were introduced as the extraction technologies for rare earth metals.

The aim of the research is to evaluate the influence of various replacing ratios of supplementary cementitious materials(SCMs) such as fly ash(FA), blast furnace slag(BS), and both FA and BS on general properties including segregation resistance as a powder based high fluidity concrete of normal strength grade with water-to-cement ratio 0.40. Specifically, by replacing the SCMs with low density powders, it was assessed that the decreased segregation resistance due to the decreased viscosity by J-ring test. As a result of the experiment, from the general test, the mixtures with SCMs showed increased segregation resistance by increased viscosity as the references, while some segregation was shown from J-ring test due to the decreased density of fresh state mixture related with the capacity of delivering coarse aggregate.
Mineralogical study was carried out for heavy minerals in the sea sand near Ongjingun bay, Kyonggi-do separated using the gravity and magnetic separators. Ilmenite, zircon and minor monazite and garnet were valuable minerals with gangue minerals of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, muscovite, hornblende, epidote and chlorite. Quantitative analysis with SIROQUANT program showed that the contents of ilmenite separated with the gravity separation (the shaking table separation), the 1st step magnetic separation (rare earth magnetic separation) and the 2nd step magnetic separation (the Eddy current magnetic separation) were increased into 0.8, 18.3, and 48.7%, respectively. The content of ilmenite, monazite and zircon were recalculated based on the chemical composition of the representative and heavy fraction products of raw sand, the 1 step and 2 step gravity separations, and the 1 step and 2 step magnetic separations. The content increased to 0.23, 0.55, 5.22, 16.17, and 44.99% in ilmenite, 0.11, 0.02, 0.16, 0.51, and 1.19% in monazite. Although the zircon content did not differ over the processes (0.13, 0.12, 0.11, 0.15, and 0.10%), the improved recovery of zircon is expected by applying sieving process because of its high content (27%) in the fine grain size fraction (< 140#) of the 2 step gravity separation.
Electrical pulse disintegration(ED) is known as an efficient technology for recovering valuable resources by inducing dielectric breakdown in solids to separate mineral interfaces in ores among the crushing technologies by high voltage discharge. In this study, ED crushing experiment and mechanical crushing experiment of sulfide minerals were performed, and SEM analysis and Microfocus X-Ray CT of the crushed product were performed in order to analyze the disintegration characteristics of zinc minerals exist in the sulfide minerals by the shock wave generated in the solid by high voltage discharge.
Zeolites were discovered as a natural mineral more than two hundred ago. In the beginning, the mineral was used as ion-exchange material and adsorbent. After the end of World War II , however, a variety of zeolites have become available in large amounts because of the establishment of low temperature synthesis and the discobery of natural zeolite deposits of sedimentary origin. Various uses of xeolite were developed utilizing the unique crystal strucrure and function of these minerals. In connection with this development remakable progress has also been made in basic stuides on the related geology and mineralogy, crystallization from sols and gels, structure, ion exchange, adsorption and cataiysis. As a result, zeolites, which had been known only as mineral specimens displayed in museums. established a firm position among the high-technology masterials with excellent functional capabilities.
The northeastern part of the Gyeongsang Basin is widely covered by the Cretaceous Hayang Group (Aptian to Albian). The Hayang Group consists of the IIjig. Hupyeongdong, Jeomgog, and Sagog formations. Heavy mineral analysis was carried out to define the possible source rocks of the Haynag Group snadstones. Heavy minerals separated from IIjig, Hupyeongdong, and Jeomgog sandstones are hematite, ilmenite, leucoxene, magnetite, pyrite, actinolite, andalusite, apatite, biotite, chlorite, epidote, garnet, hornblende, kyanite, monazite, muscovite, rutile, sphene, spinel, staurolite, tourmaline, and zircon. Based on their close association and sensitiveness, the heavy mineral assemblages can be classified into 6 syutes: 1)apatite-green tourmaline-sphene-colorless/yellowish zircon; 2) colorless garnet-epidote-rutile-brown tourmaline; 3) rounded purple zircon-rounded tourmaline-rounded rutile; 4) augite-hornblende-color- less zircon; 5) epidote-garnet-sphene; and 6) blue tourmaline. The possible source rocks corresponding to each assemblage are 1) granitic rocks; 2) metamorphic rocks (schist and gneiss) ; 3) older sedimentary rocks; 4) andesitic rocks; 5) metamorphosed impure limestone; and 6) pegmatite, respectively. Previous paleocurrent data suggest that the sediments of the study area were mainly derived from the northeastern to southeastern directions. Thus, the most possible source areas would be the east extension part of the sobaegsan metamorphic complex to the northeast and the Cheongsong Ridge to the southeast.
