The purpose of this study was to empirically verify the effects of spousal bereavement and complicated grief level on death anxiety of the elderly. The sample consisted of 1,998 adults who were aged 65 or older. Dependent variable was measured with the Death Anxiety Scale-Korean version (DAS-K). Independent variable was measured with both spousal bereavement and the Inventory of Complicated Grief-Korean version (ICG-K). Multiple regression analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0, adjusting for demographics, psycho-social and health variables. The results indicated that death anxiety level was lower among the bereaved with normal grief (p<.01) than non-bereaved. In contrast, death anxiety level was higher among the bereaved with complicated grief than non-bereaved (p<.01). The study result suggests that the most risky factor for death anxiety is complicated grief rather than the bereavement. Although the bereavement can be a universal experience, the severity and duration of symptoms after the bereavement may not be general. The unhealed emotional and physical pain after the bereavement stimulates death anxiety, and senior citizens who suffer from complicated grief often fail to integrate the bereavement and loss into reality, therefore, may not accept the death phenomenon itself. Anxiety and fear of death can emerge when they cannot acknowledge the bereavement. To manage complex sorrows and mitigate death anxiety, intervention programs should be provided to increase adaptability to the bereavement.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of education for welldying on the death anxiety and death reception of care workers who were most closely linked to death among workers who were engaged in senior welfare. It's basically meant to let care workers have a good understanding of death, death process and death-related factors to help elderly people close their life in a comfortable manner. The subjects in this study were the care workers who worked in J nursing home in the region of Gwangju. They received education in nine sessions, once a week, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package 15.0. The statistical analysis methods used in this study were reliability analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, t-test and ANOVA. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the welldying program participants showed a decrease in death anxiety. Second, the welldying program participants became more receptive to death.
In this study, death preparation was used as an independent variable, with ego integrity as successful aging used as a dependent variable while depression and death anxiety were used as mediate variables. The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of the study variables according to the demographic characteristics of the research subjects, and to create a database for developing and improving current educational programs and welfare services to help the elderly achieve successful aging. Two hundred and eighty three elderly people above the age of sixty in Cheongju city were given standardized questionnaires, and the collected data were analyzed. The results of this study are the following. First, the differences of the study variables according to the level of education, health, economy, and social involvement of the elderly are statistically significant. Second, there exists a positive relationship between mental preparation for death and ego integrity (successful aging) while there is no such relation in case of formal preparation for death and ego integrity. Third, depression and death anxiety of the elderly partially mediate ego integrity, which leads to successful aging.
This study aimed to identify the effects of death education programs among Korean aged on death anxiety and attitudes toward death in the convergence era. The searched kew words were included aged, death education program, death anxiety, and attitudes to death in the research papers published in Korea. Finally, 11 studies were selected and the effect size was calculated. Death anxiety and death attitude were selected as dependent variables, and publication type, total duration of intervention, and frequency of intervention were selected as moderator variables. The total of 11 papers were selected to estimate the effect sizes of interventions. As a result, the overall effect size of the death education program for the aged was 1.07. The overall effect size showed death education program was able to lower death anxiety (Hedges' g=1.30, 95% Cl=0.80~1.80, p<.01) and improve attitudes to death (Hedges' g=0.93, 95% Cl=0.49~1.37, p<.01) compared with the no intervention group. In the moderator analysis to identify the cause of heterogeneity, significant results were found in the frequency of intervention. We propose a study that repeatedly verifies the effect of related studies in the future by providing the theoretical basis and basic data for the development of the death education program.
The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of psychosocial support, death preparedness, and ego integrity on death anxiety in old people. The participant of this study were the elderly who attended welfare centers, worked in their workplaces, or lived at their home in Seoul regions, from whom this study had collected their data from February to May 2017. A total of 350 questionnaires were distributed and 329 copies of them were used for its final analysis using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 20.0 statistical programs. According to the results of this study, psychosocial support had no statistically significant effect on death anxiety, whereas death preparedness and ego integrity had statistically significant effects on death anxiety. Based upon these research results, this study suggested that it is necessary to develop death education and counseling programs as policy supports and practical methods for helping old people to accept their death positively, reintegrate their ego, and perform their successful aging.
Purpose: This study is to explore the relationships among spirituality, death anxiety and burnout level of nurses caring for cancer patients. Methods: Participants were 210 nurses from a cancer hospital in Seoul. Data were collected from April until June 2012 and analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The mean score for spirituality was 3.51 out of six. Among sub-categories, the one that scored the highest was the purpose and meaning of life, followed by unifying interconnectedness, inner resources and transcendence. The mean score for death anxiety was 3.22, and the sub-categories in the order of high score were denial of death, awareness of the shortness of time, pure death anxiety and fear of matters related to death. For the burnout, the mean was 4.10. Among sub-categories, highest mark was found with emotional exhaustion, followed by depersonalization and personal accomplishment. The spirituality level was negatively correlated with those of death anxiety and burnout. Death anxiety was positively correlated with burnout levels. Nurses with the higher spirituality level also had a higher level of education and experience of spiritual education, believed in the existence of God. In contrast, death anxiety and burnout levels were higher among those with a lower level of education, atheists, and for those who answered that religion has little influence on life. Conclusion: Thus, it is necessary to provide spiritual interventions for nurses who care for cancer patients to develop their spirituality, reduce death anxiety and prevent them from burning out easily.

The purpose of this study is to measure Koreans' views on the life and death and to illuminate the structural relationship between their subscales. The subscales are composed of afterlife views, death anxiety, death concern, will of suicide inhibition. Data drawn from Korean General Social Survey(KGSS) collected in 2009 were analyzed. The findings show that favorable attitude towards afterlife has positive relationship with favorable attitude towards returning to this life. The favorable attitude towards returning to the present life has positive relationship with death anxiety while it has negative relationship with will of suicide inhibition. The favorable attitude towards afterlife has positive relationship with death concern and will of suicide inhibition. Social support and happiness have negative impact on death concern while they are positively associated with will of suicide inhibition. These findings indicate that all subscales of views on life and death are significantly related to themselves and are also correlated with socio-demographic factors, which means that we have to comprehensively look inside the views on the life and death in order to understand the increasing suicide among Koreans. Further studies need approaching Koreans' views on the life and death by using more validated tools to capture their holistics picture.
In the aged society, the quality of life of elders assessed by life satisfaction is important for successful aging. This study examined the impact of preparation for old age including social support and death anxiety on the life satisfaction of the elders. We analyzed the data which has obtained from 282 senior center users in Choong-chung-nam-do. A multiple hierarchical analysis showed the effect of preparation for old age, social support and death anxiety on the life satisfaction of the elders. In addition, we found a interaction effect preparation for old age and social support. These findings suggest the importance of social support and death anxiety as well as preparation for old age for successful aging.
Purpose: This descriptive study was aimed at identifying the relations among geriatric nurses' terminal care performance, death anxiety and self-esteem and the factors that affect nurses' terminal care stress. Methods: Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire completed by 212 geriatric hospital nurses working in 10 hospitals in K city and B metropolitan city. Results: The survey results showed that the stress factors were terminal care performance and death anxiety. Significant predictors for terminal care stress were death anxiety and terminal care performance. (And the higher the level of death anxiety and terminal care performance were, the heavier the stress was.) These factors explained 32.5% of the variance in terminal care stress. Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that terminal care performance was an important factor of terminal care stress for geriatric nurses. Therefore, it seems that it is necessary to develop an educational intervention program to improve nurses' terminal care performance to reduce their terminal care stress.
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of the spiritual mediating and the control effects of these between the death anxiety and meaning of life in baby boomers.
