  • Asiacornococcus kaki (Kuwana) known as a serious pest on Diospyros kaki Thunb. has been reported erroneously as Eriococcus lagerstroemiae Kuwana. These two species were redescribed and illustrated for correct identification by the morphological characters of adult females with known host plants. Asiacornococcus Tang & Hao is a newly known genus from the Korean Peninsula.

  • This study was conducted to find the control methods, status of overwintering and seasonal occurrence of Erioccoccus largerstroemiae on persimmon trees in Ch'ondo area, Kyongbuk province in Korea. Usually, overwintering eggs were sheltered in bark, among them the rate of alive eggs was 28.7%. The activiation of garpe-myrtle scale showed from late April, and they have three generations per year. The first occurrence of larval stage of Erioccoccus largerstroemiae starts from late June to early July, the second occurrence begins from middle August to late August, and from late June to early July, the second occurrence begins from middle August to late August, and from middle September to late September is the third, thus, three peaks of occurrence revealed in early July middle August, and late September respectively. Average number of eggs conceived in female adult was 229.3. Spray effect of chemical control showed as follows; lime sulfur with tow applications of pesticides (late June, late August) at 97.8%, machine oil with tow applications of pesticides (late June, late August) at 96.8%. And during the growing period, the spray results using three applications of pesticide only (late June, late August, amid September) showed 77.2% in field condition.

  • Scale insects heavily damaged many agricultural crops and trees in urban and forest areas. This study was conducted to carry out alternative control methods for environmentally friendly control of scale insects. Hot water extract of Quisquali indica produced high mortality against the black pine bast scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae in previously experiment. Methanol extract obtained from fruit of Q. indica was successively fractionated using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol and water which were examined by exposing for their insecticidal activity against four Cocoidea species (Eriococcus lagerstroemiae, Ceroplastes japonicus, Crisicoccus pini and Planococcus citri) in laboratory. Hexane fraction gave the highest insecticidal activity against scale insect pest. GC-mass analysis confirmed that the main compounds of Q. indica were alpha-pinene, methyl palmitate, eugenol, methyl myristate, phthalic acid mono(2-ethylhexyl)ester and palmitic acid. Among those compounds, ${\alpha}$-pinene was included 10 hexane subfractions. $LC_{50}$ of ${\alpha}$-pinene was 0.0114 ppm against 2nd instar of E. lagerstroemiae. These results suggest that Q. indica extracts might be used as an alternative control agent of scale insects.

  • This study investigated seasonal occurrence, host preference and developmental characteristics of E. lagerstroemiae was most likely to have two generations a year with first occurrence of adults form late April to late may and second from late August to late October including 2 peaks in early May and late August, respectively. Overwintering stages were mostly eggs and larvae and its composition rate was 57.1% of eggs and 42.9% of larvae. Host plats investigated were 7 species 7 families and most preferred species were Lagerstroemia japonica and Diospyros kaki. As morphological characteristics of E. lagerstroemiae, sized of length/sidth were 0.29/0.16 mm for the egg. 0.41/0.16 mm for the first instar larva, 0.96/0.47 mm for the male adult. Number of eggs deposited per female adult was 221.9 individuals. Hatching rate at various temperatures was above 90% at below $30^{\circ}C$. Egg periods were also short\ened with increase of temperatures at below $30^{\circ}C$ but decreased to 56.3% at $35^{\circ}C$. Egg periods were also shortened with increase of temperatures at below $30^{\circ}C$. Hatching rate was not affected by photoperiods but egg periods were shortened with increase of day length.

  • Population densities of intermediate nymphs and egg saw of Matsucoccus thunbergianae, a major insect pest of Pinus thunbergiona in southern coastal area of Korean peninsula, were est~mated. Tree samples of ca. 10cm D.B.H. were collected from old infestation area and newly invaded area. The numben of plimaly branches per tree were not significantly different by the locality, but those of secondaly and smaller branches were smaller in old infestation area The numbers of intermediate nymphs per tree in old infestation area and in newly invaded area were 10.8 and 13.1 times more than those on the trunk, respectively Approximately between 4, 200 and 208, 500 nymphs per tree were estimated. Men secondaw and smaller bmnch samples collected from the basal part of middle crown height, or from the central or the basal part of lower crown height, the number of samples required for the emr range of 20% were 21 and 11 far 10-20cm and 20-3 crn long branches, respectively. Approx~mately 63.6% of egg sacs of the whole tree were on the trunk. The node/intemode bearing the largest branch had the highest egg sac density; including that, four adjacent nodes/intemodes had ca. 37% of egg saw on the trunk.

  • Flight behavior of Mntsucoccus thunbergianae males and their response to the synthetic sex pheromone, (6R.lOR)-matsuone, were studied in Pinus thunbergiana forests More males were flying around the tree crown than near the ground. A dispenser loaded w~th 50 vg of the pheromone appeared to affect the density of male flights less than 10 meters Sticky traps with 50 pg of the pheromone attracted flylng males, but those with 1 pg were not effectwe in a forest wlth high crown closure, more males were tmpped at upper crown level than near the ground whereas males appeared to be more responsive to pheromone near the ground in a forest with low crown closure Monitoring new scale iniestations with pheromone mps was much more effective than egg sac surveys, the customary detecting procedures Maiing disruption was not achieved by placing 32 mg of pheromone m a space of l X l X l meter.
