This study was conducted to determine the effect of aluminum sulfate[Al$_2$(S0$_4$)$_3$$.$14H$_2$O], commonly referred to as ALUM, addition to broiler litter on 3 and 6 week old broiler performance and the nitrogen content of the litter at 6 weeks of age. The two treatment groups were 134 identical diets with the same protein levels, but one group(T$_1$) had ALUM added as a top dressing to the litter at a rate of 200 g ALUM / kg of rice bran, while T$_2$ did not have ALUM added to the litter. Feed consumption for T$_1$ was higher in the 22 to 42 day-old and 0 to 42 day-old periods (P<0.05). Body weight in T$_1$ was also higher in the 0 to 42 day -old period (P<0.0l). There was no difference, however, in the feed : gain ratio between T$_1$ and T$_2$ During the first 5 weeks, T$_1$ had significantly less(P<0.05 or 0.01) ammonia emission from the litter than T$_2$ but at 6 weeks there was no difference in ammonia concentration between the two groups. At 6 weeks, T$_1$ had a lower litter pH than Ta (P<0.05) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen(TKN) was higher far T$_1$ than T$_2$ (P<0.05). However,71 did not show any difference from T$_2$ in the content of NH4-N and NO3-N. In summary, the addition of ALUM to broiler litter improved broiler performance at 6 weeks, while increasing nitrogen content from the litter used as the nitrogen fertilizer although ammonia emission was increased in T$_1$ at 6 weeks.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of restricted feeding to pullet on growth and endocrine profile in layers(Isa brown). One thousand eighty brown-layer chicks were divided into three treatments; conventional feeding(ad libitum) and two restricted feedings(80% of conventional diet) for 70 weeks. One of restricted feeding started from seven to seventeen weeks of age, and the other started from twelve to seventeen weeks of age. Diets were formulated by NRC(1994) recommendation. Body weight and feed intake were measured every two weeks, and body composition and organ weight analyzed every week in rearing period and every eight weeks in laying period. Blood was collected at weighing body weight and was analyzed for the concentration of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰand estradiol. Body weight and feed intake decreased as restriction of feeding begins comparing to ad libitum group(P<0.05), but reached to similar body weight and feed intake at 20 wk of age regardless of restriction. There were no significant differences in development of digestive tract and attached organs among the treatment groups. During rearing period, however, they were slightly higher in restricted group which was low in body weight. In terms of body composition, fat contents of restricted group were significantly lower(P<0.05) than that of ad libitum group around 1,000 grams of body weight. High concentration of IGF-Ⅰwas observed.

In this study, we investigated the effect of separate-sex and straight-run rearing system on the productivity of Korean native chickens. A total of 1,140 GSP-Hanhyup® Korean native chickens were divided into male, female, and straight-run rearing groups, and the survival rate, body weight, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were investigated from birth to 12 weeks of age. The average survival rate was 97.9%, and there were no significant differences among the groups. Body weight was significantly different among the groups at all weeks of age (P<0.01). After 4 weeks of age, the male group had the highest weight, followed by the straight-run group, and finally the female group. At 10 weeks, the most uniform body weight was shown in the female group (78%), while the lowest was in straight-run group (44%). Comparing the separate-sex and straight-run groups, male chickens were found to have higher body weights in the separate rearing group than in the straight-run group; however, there was little difference in those of female chickens. Feed intake was the highest in the male group, followed by the straight-run group, and lastly, the female group, while the feed conversion ratio had an opposite trend. Although there is little difference in the production performance of chickens between separate-sex rearing and straight-run rearing system, we concluded that the separate-sex rearing system is much more advantageous than the straight-run rearing system in terms of productivity due to group uniformity.
This work was carried out to investigate performance and carcass yield of large-type broiler females at different stocking densities. Chicks (n = 492; 1-day-old; female; Arbor Acre broiler) were reared for six weeks (starter, 0~1 wk; earlier, 1~3 wk; finisher, 3~6 wk) and randomly divided into 3 treatments (4 replications/treatment, 36, 41 or 46 birds/replication). Treatments were T1 (10.9 birds/$m^2$), T2 (12.4 birds/$m^2$) and T3 (13.9 birds/$m^2$) by the stocking densities. Research indexes were livability, body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, production efficiency factor, carcass yield and primal cuts ratio (wing, leg, back, breast and neck). Livability (%) was 90% or more for all treatments, but there was no significant difference on weekly livability (%). Body weight of T3 treatment were the lowest at 3 wk and body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were the lowest at 2~3 wk (P<0.05). Production efficiency factors of T1, T2 and T3 were 331.0, 340.8 and 336.0, respectively, and there was no significant difference among treatments. Leg meat ratio of T2 treatment was higher compared to other treatments at the age of 4 wk (P<0.05). Carcass yield of T1 treatment was the highest as 76.2% at the age of 5 wk (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference on carcass ratio and partial meat ratio among treatments at the age of 6 wk. This result may provide the standard data of different stocking densities for heavy female broilers.
In this study, the effects of feeding citrus byproducts on nutritional components of Korean native chickens were investigated. Two samples of Korean native chickens were used for this study: T0 (chickens fed with only feed for laying hen until they became 39 weeks old, not with citrus byproducts) and T1 (chickens fed with citrus byproducts). The feed for T1 was the same as T0 for the first 16 weeks, and then was made by adding 4% of citrus byproducts to the feed for T0 between $17{\sim}39$ weeks. The chicken used for the experiment was obtained by chilling them for 2 days after slaughter. There was no significant difference between T0 and T1 regardless of feeding citrus byproducts, in terms of their breast/thigh's calorie, contents of moisture, protein, fat and ash, total structural amino acid, total free amino acid and composition of saturated/unsaturated fatty acids. The breast's cholesterol amount of T0 and T1 were 48.4 mg/100 g and 47.6 mg/100 g, respectively, while that of thigh for T0 and T1 were 75.7 mg/100 g and 72.8 mg/100 g, respectively, which implies that T1 showed lower amount of cholesterol than T0. T1 showed significantly higher amount of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B2 for thigh than T0 (p<0.05).
The effects of feeding citrus byproducts on the quality of Korean native chickens were investigated during cold storage. Two samples of Korean native chickens (39 weeks old, $1.30{\pm}0.5$ kg) were used for the study: T0 (chickens not fed citrus byproducts) and T1(chickens fed a 4% citrus byproduct diets since from age 17 weeks until 39 weeks old). The breast and thigh meat of each sample were vacuum-packed, and then used for experiments on change in Hunter's color values, acid values (AV), peroxide values (POV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values, electron donating ability (EDA), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) and total plate count during storage for two weeks at 3C. Changes in $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were slower in T1 than in T0. T1 showed slower increment rates for AV, POV, and TBA values during storage, as well as better antioxidant activity, than T0. T1 showed slower increment rates for VBN and total plate counts during storage than T0. Thus, feeding citrus byproducts suppressed change in Hunter's color value, rancidity, and freshness in breast and thigh meat during storage, and resulted in higher EDA value (p<0.05), which implies that the diet has positive effects in maintaining high meat quality.
Data pertaining to the first generation of a Synthetic White Leghorn flock were used to estimate the heritabilities of and genetic correlation between partial egg production(egg number or percentage) or diversely segmented part records and other traits such as age at sexual maturity, residual and annual egg production, and to compare the expected genetic gain from selection on partial egg number or partial percent production with correlated response in other traits. The estimated heritabilites for six measures of egg Production were ranged from 29 to 35, while heritability for age at sexual maturity (SM) was intermediate (48). Genetic correlations between partial egg number (P) and annual egg number. (A), and partial percent production (P') and annual percent production (A') were 51 and 72, respectively. Genetic correlation between P and SM was estimated largely negative (-.64), while correlation bettween P' and SM was positively intermediate(34). In comparing direct response from selection on partial production (P or P') with another response in correlated trait, selection on P would be 25% more efficient than selection of P' for improving A, while selection of P' would be 94% more efficient than selection P for improving A' For shortening SM selection of P would be 98% more efficient than selection on P'.
In order to study the effects of feeding time (08:00 and 14:00 hours) and frequency (once a day, twice a day and once every other day) on the performances of broiler breeder hens, two experiments were conducted with 1, 248 hens of Maniker strain during 24-2 weeks (Experiment 1) and 42-60 weeks (Experiment 2) of age. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. No significant differences were observed in hen-day egg production and feed conversion rate between feeding times or among feeding frequencies through the entire experimental period. 2. Mean egg weight during the age of 24-42 weeks was significantly increased by feeding in the afternoon (p<0.01). But it was not significantly affected by feeding time or frequency during 42-60 weeks of age. 3. Fertility and hatchability of eggs at 36 weeks and 60 weeks of age were not significantly different among treatments. 4. By feeding in the afternoon egg breaking strength at 60 weeks of age was significantly improved (p<0.05), but not at 36 weeks of age. 5. In diurnal distribution of egg production, hens fed in the afternoon produced more eggs in the afternoon than hens fed during the morning (p<0.01).
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of probiotics on the performance, nutrients digestibility, noxious gas emission and microflora population on the cecum of broilers. A total of 120 broilers, consisted of 4 treatments X 3 replicates X 10 broilers per replicates, were fed the experimental diets containing 0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% probiotics for 5 weeks. Broilers fed the diets containing 0.1 and 0.3% probiotic had higher (p<0.05) body weight gain and feed conversion than those of the others from the 3rd to 4th week. Broilers fed 0.3% probiotic had higher (p<0.05) body weight gain and feed conversion than those of the other levels from the 5th to 6th week. Broilers fed the diets containing 0.1% and 0.3% probiotic had higher (p<0.05) body weight gain and feed conversion than those of the others from the 2nd to 6th week. Dry matter digestibility was significantly (p<0.05) improved with 0.3% probiotic. Emission of ammonia and sulfate hydrogen gas was significantly (p<0.05) decreased at 6th week. However, there was no (p<0.05) difference at the levels of 0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% at the 4th weeks. There was an increase in the lactobacillus sp, but there was a decrease in the microflora population of coliforms in the cecum of broiler with 0.1% and 0.3% probiotics.
These results indicated that the compound probiotics of 0.1${\sim}$0.3% were effective in the body weight gain, feed conversion, nutrients digestibility, noxious gas emission and microflora population on the cecum in broilers.
This work was conducted to investigate the effects of phytase on N and P excretion of laying hens excreta. Three hundred sixty ISA Brown layers were selected to investigate excreta excretion for 65 weeks and to investigate the effect of phytase on total excretion and N and P excretion of layers from 55 weeks. The experimental diets were fed the starter (0~5 wk), grower (5~12 wk), developer (12~16 wk), prelay diets (16 wk~first egg), layer diets for starting period (first egg~32 wk), middle (32~45 wk), finishing diets (45~55 wk, 55 wk~). Thirty ISA Brown layers were selected to investigate the effect of phytase supplementation on total N and P excretion of layers at 55 weeks and assigned randomly to 3 treatments groups (10 birds/treatment) and phytase was added to basal diets at 300 and 600 FTU/kg. Average body weight, feed intake, water intake, and excreta excretion were 1,622, 105.7, 187.2 and 124.7 g/bird/day, respectively. Excreta of birds fed phytase were DM (33.2, 31.2, 30.5 g/day), N (0.46, 0.42, 0.40 g/day) and P (0.51, 0.49, 0.48 g/day) and reduced as dietary phytase increased, Finally, dietary phyase can reduce the N and P excretion, but the amount of excreta was not different depending from the phytase addition in layers. This work investigated the N and P excretion of laying hens excreta and were considered that dietary phytase can reduce the N and P excretion for short period.
