  • In order to evaluate the characteristics of solid-solid contact interfaces, reflection or transmission techniques involving normal-incidence longitudinal waves are generally used. However, these normal-incidence techniques are of limited use in field applications such as in the inspection of welded parts. The oblique-incidence ultrasonic technique may be an alternative for overcoming these problems. However, in this technique, the mode conversion at the contact interfaces should be taken into account along with the normal and tangential interface stiffness. In this study, we have suggested a theoretical model for obliqueincidence ultrasonic waves at the contact interfaces and analyzed their reflection and transmission characteristics. Experimental results showed that the measured reflection coefficient and second harmonic wave agreed well with the suggested theoretical model. Consequently, the oblique-incidence technique can be a promising method for evaluating the characteristics of the contact interfaces.

  • The shear wave velocity is related with the stiffness of granular skeleton and mass density. The shear stiffness of the granular skeleton remains unaffected by the presence of the fluid. Bender elements are convenient shear wave transducers for instrumenting soil cells due to optimal soil-transducer coupling. This study addresses the principles of the shear wave, the design and implementation of bender elements including electromagnetic coupling prevention, directivity, resonant frequency, detection of first arrival, and near field effects. It is shown that electromagnetic coupling effects can be minimized using parallel-type bender elements. Thus, the in-plane S-wave directivity is quasi-circular. The resonant frequency of bender element installations depends on the geometry of the bender element, the anchor efficiency and the soil stiffness. One of the most cumbersome parts in the bender element test is near field effects, which affect the selection of arrival time. The selection of the first arrival within the near field Is effectively solved by the multiple reflection technique and signal matching technique. Bender elements, which requires several considerations, may be effective tools for the subsurface characterization by using S-wave.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of salt water on the mechanical properties of a high modulus carbon-epoxy composite. Specimens were made of a carbon-epoxy composite UPN139B of SK Chemical and tested under inplane tension and shear after 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months immersion in 3.5% salt water. Acceleration technique such as temperature elevation was not used. The tensile strengths and modulli in fiber and matrix direction did not show any remarkable degradation until 12 months immersion. In contrast to the tensile properties, shear strength and modulus started to gradually decrease up to about 10% of values of dry specimens after 12 months immersion. It was confirmed through the test that the material UPN139B can be an effective material for the shell structures in salt water to resist against the external pressure buckling because of the high fiber directional modulus and corrosion resistance.

First, the structure of the optimal design Layout design and development of the component, and then achieve them through the Control Arm rigidity and optimal structure design and robust design of the focus areas of the expected stress Control Arm. Second, to develop a Control Arm reflects the high rigidity and high performance lightweight structures. Control Arm them developed to meet the design and rigidity as required by the consumer through the hollow, and to develop a process for the Core. Third, through optimum alloy composition and heat treatment methods will be derived to derive the amount of iron alloy (Cu, Ni, Mo) and Austempered heat treated and tempered condition. Fourth, through the development of optimum molding technology development component to develop the optimum ADI for the low-stiffness, high-rigidity component development, it attempts to develop a high-strength casting forming technology..

  • In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

  • The records of field instrumentation, which have been performed on the pneumatic caisson used for substructure of the Youngjong Grand Bridge, were analyzed to investigate the ground contact pressure under rigid foundation of large pneumatic caisson embedded in various ground layers. During sinking the pneumatic caisson, the resisting force was mobilized against sinking the caisson at the contact area between bottom of the caisson and the ground. The resisting force could be measured by the reaction force gauges instrumented under the edge of bottom of the pneumatic caisson. And the ground contact pressure could be estimated by use of the measuring records of the resisting force. The ground contact pressure under rigid foundation of large pneumatic caisson shows concave distribution on bedrock, while convex distribution was shown in marine deposit soil layer as well as weathered rock layer. And, the ground contact pressure in various ground layers was distributed axis-symmetrically. The distribution shape of the ground contact pressure determined by the maximum pressure acting on foundation of the large pneumatic caisson showed good coincidence with the distribution shape proposed for rigid foundation by Kgler(1936) and Fang(1991).

  • This study dealt with the behavior of pile-abutment joints in integral abutment bridges. Two types of pile-abutment joints were proposed to strengthen its rigid action. One was fabricated with transverse rebars which penetrated the H-pile in the abutment. The other was composed of stud shear connectors on the flanges of the H-pile. Three half scaled pile-abutment joint specimens were fabricated and loading tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of proposed joints. The results showed that the initial stiffness in elastic region of all specimens was sufficient to be applied for the integral abutment bridges. However, the performances of the proposed joints were shown to be more effective in rigid action compared to the joints types suggested by the Integral Bridge Design Guideline. The results from stiffness, strength, rotation and crack propagation tests supported this matter.

  • This paper presents the results of numerical investigation on support mechanism of geogrid-encased stone columns for use in soft ground. A number of cases were analyzed using a axial-and 3D stress-pore pressure coupled model that can effectively model construction sequence and drainage as well as reinforcing effects of geogrid-encased stone columns. The results indicated that the geogrid encasement tends to significantly improve the load carrying of a stone column. Also revealed was that such a confinement effect depends on encasement length and stiffness of geogrid. It is also shown that there exist critical encasement length and stiffness of geogrid for a given condition.

  • In this study, in the first place, parameters primarily influencing displacement and stress were constructed by using the Finite Difference Method; then using those parameters, the result of crown displacement and convergence among the existing, experimental values of a centrifuge model were compared with the result of numerical analysis; and then considering the stress and time effect of lining installation, parameters according to the difference of stiffness were studied. In the result of this study, it found out that rough, ground reinforcement effect manifests itself when reinforcement propert of the grouting of the big scale steel pipe through 3-D analysis is E= 4,000tf/m2 which of the stiffness of the original ground.

  • Generally, earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for stability In this paper, the spatial structures are applied an isolation system to boundary parts between roof systems and sub-structures. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behaviors of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high-rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify an analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behaviors of roof systems according to the mass and stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.
