  • The use of imported structural steel tubes has been increased in domestic construction field because of its low price, but the mechanical properties of those steel tube are not verified exactly. This study includes coupon test and stub - column compression test on the structural steel tube. The compression test of stub - column was performed to characterize and quantify the material characteristic and strength of column compatibility, in which we compared the experiment formula and the abstract formula by the application of the LRFD standard formula and multiple column curve.

  • In this paper, the inelastic buckling behavior of the beam under uniform bending was investigated using the energy-based method, which can tackle problems in fourth order eigenvalue. The pattern of residual stress was not available to satisfy the I-sections manufactured in Korea. however; therefore, the well-known polynomial and simplified pattern of residual stress was adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-distortional buckling behavior of the beam with I-sections manufactured in Korea was investigated. The study was then extended to the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of the beam by minimizing the out-of-plane web distortion. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this paper were compared with the prediction of allowable bending stress given in the Korean steel designers' manual (1995). Results showed that the importance of inelastic lateral-distortional buckling did not arise for beams under uniform bending. Likewise, the design method in KSDM (1995) was proven to bo too conservative for intermediate and short spans of beams without intermediate bracing.

  • Numerical methods are developed to obtain the buckling loads and to analyze the postbuckling behavior of the tapered steel piles. The nondimensional differential equations governing the elastica of the buckled piles are derived by the third order theory and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the differential equations, and the bisection method is used to obtain the buckling loads and the reaction moments of the clamped ends. Both the linear and stepped taper of the steel piles are considered as the variable crosssection in the differential equations. As the numerical results, the equilibrium paths, the buckling loads vs. section ratio curves and the typical elastica and the bending moment diagrams of the buckled piles are presented in figures. Experimental studies that complement the theoretical results are presented. It is expected that the numerical methods developed in this study for calculating the buckling loads and analyzing the postbuckling behavior of the steel piles are used in the structural and foundation engineering.

  • The performance for the algorithm of the arc length method has been examined in terms of the choice of the tangential stiffness matrix through the analysis for the snap buckling phenomenon of the arch beam. The curved beam element with 2 nodes including shear effect has been formed by strain element technique and then it has been used in this nonlinear analysis. Snap-through characteristics has been examined with respect to the ratios of the arch beam length to hight.

  • The increasing use of curved beams in buildings, vehicles, ships, and aircraft has prompted studies directed toward the development of an accurate method for analyzing the dynamic behavior of such structures. The stability behavior of elastic curved beams has been the subject of a large number of investigations. Solutions of the relevant differential equations have been obtained traditionally using standard finite difference or finite element methods. These techniques require a great deal of computer time as the number of discrete nodes becomes relatively large under the conditions of complex geometry and loading. One of the efficient procedures for the solution of partial differential equations is the method of differential quadrature. The differential quadrature method (DQM) has been applied to a large number of cases to overcome the difficulties of the complex algorithms of programming for the computer, as well as the excessive use of storage due to the conditions of complex geometry and loading. The in-plane buckling of curved beams considering the extensibility of the arch axis was analyzed under uniformly distributed radial loads using the DQM. The critical loads were calculated for the member with various parameter ratios, boundary conditions, and opening angles. The results were compared with the precise results by other methods for cases, in which they were available. The DQM, using only a limited number of grid points, provided results that agreed very well (less than 0.3%) with the exact ones. New results according to diverse variations were obtained, showing the important roles in the buckling behavior of curved beams, and can be used in comparisons with other numerical solutions or with experimental test data.

  • In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, is was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.

  • In this study, inelastic buckling strength of HSA800 steel columns were tested to investigate the applicability of current column curve (KBC2009, 2010 AISC-LRFD) to HSA800 steel. Key test variables included width-thickness ratio, plate-edge restraints, and column slenderness ratio. Specimens made of ordinary steel (SM490) were also tested for comparison purposes. All the concentrically loaded HSA800 specimens exhibited sufficient buckling strength compared to the current column curve, but some of SM490 specimens showed understrength. This difference can be explained by the lower residual stress present in HSA800 specimens.

  • Numerical methods for calculating both the natural frequencies and buckling loads of columns with the multiple elastic springs are developed. In order to derive the governing equations of such columns, each elastic spring is modeled as a discrete elastic foundation with the finite longitudinal length. By using this model, the differential equations governing both the free vibrations and buckled shapes, respectively, of such columns are derided. These differential equations are solved numerically. The Runge- Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the determinant search method combined with Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the eingenvalues. namely natural frequencies and buckling loads. In the numerical examples, the clamped-clamped. clamped-hinged, hinged-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints are considered. Extensive numerical results including the frequency parameters, mode shapes of free vibrations and buckling load parameters are presented in the non-dimensional forms.

  • Recently, it has been reported that buried pipes' crack is concentrated on curved parts. In this study, 3D-Finite element analysis is performed for Analytical Evaluation on the Structural Safety of Horizontally Curved Parts of Buried Pipe. The constructed pipe cracked in curved parts of pipe is analyzed and all kinds of loads affected to buried pipes are considered. Displacement, stresses and buckling analysis are performed. The stress analysis shows that stress in curved parts is larger than stresses in straight parts and exceeds allowable stress in some parts. So, stress analysis on curved parts is needed for safety for buried pipe.
