• Decay during soybean sprout culture detracts their quality as well as increases their production costs. This study was done to determine the effects of acetic and propionic acids on growth and morphological characters of the sprouts. The soybean seeds of 3 cultivars (cv. Eunhakong, Pungsannamulkong and Orialtae) imbibed for 2 minutes at their different concentrations (0, 0.1 and 0.2%) were soaked for 6 hours in 4 ppm BA solution after the first 5.5 hour water imbibition and 0.5 hour aeration, and cultured at $20^{\circ}C$. On the 6th day, harvested soybean sprouts were classified into 4 categories on the base of hypocotyl length;>7cm, 4 to 7cm,<4cm and not germinated, and their morphological characters, fresh weights, lesion spots on cotyledons were measured or analyzed. The stronger concentration the higher rate of longer than 4cm although there was no significant difference between the two acids. Pungsannamulkong showed the longest hypocotyls but Eunhakong did the thickest ones, and Orialtae did the greatest total fresh weight, in which all the characters were not influenced by the two acids and their concentrations. Lesion spots on the cotyledons were equal to the two acids although less in their treatments than in no treatment. Utilization of propionic acid was more desirable Dan acetic acid through their treatment cost analysis.

 • To determine lethal temperature of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv Vernal) at heat-stressed conditions, seedlings grown in a small pots for 4 weeks were subjected to different temperature regimes of heat treatment. No apparent demage was observed when the plants were treated at 45, 50 or $60^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Heat treatments at 60 and $65^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, several plants were withered and showed damage symptom on their leaves. When the plants were exposed to $70^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, most of leaves were severely withered, but it was not lethal conditions for the whole plants. By contrast, most of plants were died within one day after heat treatment at $80^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Furthermore, plants exposed to $80^{\circ}C$ for 50 min were also died within 7 days. It was found that new shoots were regenerated from the plants that had been treated at $80^{\circ}C$ within 45 min. These results indicate that heat treatment at $80^{\circ}C$ for 50 min is an optimum condition to distinguish the lethality of alfalfa plants. Simple viability assay system established in this study will be useful fer selection and characterization of heat-tolerant transgenic alfalfa plants.

 • A breeding population of Quercus glauca has been established via simple direct selection. Seedlings from naturally crossed seeds of 35 selected families growing in Jeju Island were placed using stroll repeated planting into two experimental forest located at Hannam and Sanghyo in Jeju. After 3 years of planting, characteristics of growth were examined. Growth pattern of trees in Sanghyo was better than those in Hannam. The average heights of filial were 66.8 cm in Hannam and 92.5 cm in Sanghyo. Root collar diameters of filial in Hannam and Sanghyo were 9.3 mm and 12.2 mm, respectively. A great weather differences especially in precipitation and temperature were shown between two test sites. The result of difference of growth pattern between two sites could be useful in provenance adaptability test. Data within families and individuals obtained from this study was also useful for establishment of seed orchard of Q. glauca.

 • This study was conducted to provide data for the maintenance of the Corylopsis coreana community within the Hallyeohaesang National Park. Survey site of Corylopsis coreana community was located at a valley, which composed of over 60% exposed rock. As this result, much of the species was damaged or washed away due to the water flow from rainfall. The tree layers dominant species were Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora. while the subtree layers dominant species were Corylopsis coreana, Acer pseudosieboldianum, Sapium japonicum, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cornus kousa etc. The shrub layers dominant species were Callicarpa japonica and Smilax china etc., and herbaceous layers dominant species were Disporum smilacinum etc. Increased precipitation and rainfall days were observed from May to September in this valley during 2008~2010, which likely increased soil erosion and damage. Because water flow pattern was dispersed the Corylopsis coreana seed and the soil floor was shallow, and population of Corylopsis coreana seedlings were diminished.

 • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the growth of Fagopyrum tataricum. It showed a tendency to promote the germination rate and plant height of tartary buckwheat under high temperature. Plant height and number of leaves were promoted in the order of 25 > 20 > 15 > 3$0^{\circ}C$ under the different temperature after 30 days of the planting. In the 10, 12, 14hr photoperiods at 2$0^{\circ}C$, plant height, number of leaves and dry weight were increased as much as photoperiod became long except by 16hr. Rutin contents was not regular both common and tartary buckwheat under the photoperiods. The rutin content in leaves was higher than stem. Compared to yield of tartary and common buckwheat, plant height, number of leaves, number of branch and stem diameter of tartary buckwheat increased more than common buckwheat. Especially, number of leaves was increased about 2.5 times more than common buckwheat. And there was a difference in about 2.1 times in grain weight and about 5.4 times in number of grains. Rutin content was 1469.8mg/l00g in grain of tartary buckwheat. It was about 60 times higher than 22mg/100g in grain of common buckwheat.
