Lateral roots of soybean sprouts should deeply affect their quality and marketability. The study was done to compare the effects of ocher, chitosan, corn kennel, tea (Thea sinensis L.) and hard rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoides Oliver) leaf extracts on lateral root formation, growth and morphological characters of the sprouts. Seeds of three cultivars, Pungsannamulkong, Sowonkong and Junjery, were imbibed for 5 hours into their 10% solutions and cultured for 6 days. The cultured sprouts were classified into 4 categories to calculate their composition rates on the base of hypocotyl lengths;>7 cm (A), 4 to 7 cm (B), < 4 cm (C) and not germinated (D), and their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights were measured. Composition rate of A was the lowest in Junjery of the three cultivars, while that of C showed reverse result compared to A. This results was the most distinct in hard rubber tree leaf extracts (HRTLE) of the five treatments. In HRTLE treatment, lateral root formation rate were formed in almost of Sowonkong although reduced in order of Pungsannamulkong and Junjery. However, there was no significant difference between the other treatments. Lateral roots per sprout were the lowest in HRTLE treatment of the 5 treatments. In all treatments except the chitosan treatment, the roots were most formed in Sowonkong but least in Junjery. Sprout length adding hypocotyl and root was the shortest in Junjery compared to the other two cultivars. and was the longest in tea leaf extract treatment but the shortest in HRTLE treatment. The result in total fresh weight of sprouts was similar to that of the sprout length.
Hypocotyl explants of Chinese cabbage (us. 'Jeong Sang' and 'Seoul') produced adventitious shoots on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 4mg/L $AgNO_3$, 5 mg/L acetosyringone, 4 mg/L 6-benzyladenine and 3mg/L alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid (SI) after cocoultivation with strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens (LBA4404) harboring the pCAMBIA1301 and the $_PPTN290$ containing hygromycin-resistance gene and paromomycin-resistance gene as a selectable marker genes, respectively. There was a significant difference in the frequency of transgenic plants depending on antibiotics and cultivars used. Paromomycin was better than hygromycin, and cultivar 'Jeong-sang' was higher than 'c.v. Seoul' in the frequency of transgenic plants. In particular, the highest frequency (0.70%) of transgenic plants was obtained from selection medium (SI) containing 100mg/L paromomycin in c.v., 'Jeong-sang' GUS positive response were obtained 9 plants and 3 plants from the cultivars, 'Jeong-sang' and 'Seoul', respectively. They were grown to maturity in a greenhouse and normally produced $T_1$ seeds. GUS histochemical assay for progeny $(T_1)$ revealed that the transgenes were expressed in the plant genome.

The purpose of this study is to observe the growth habit and investigate a possibility of cultivating the GM rice (CaMsrB2-8) as a rice cultivar having drought resistance. Germination viability test showed that there was no significant difference between the drought-resistant GM(CaMsrB2-8) and non-GM (Ilmi) rice which was the parent variety at the GM rice. All the seeds of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi germinated after 6 days. Viviparous germination was not found in CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi that was grown in greenhouse at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with water spraying for 40 days. Ratooning of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi was observed in 7-14 days and found uniform in field condition. CaMsrB2-8 seemed to grow faster than Ilmi. But CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi were similar in 14-21 days. Both CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi showed low seed shattering and more than 90% grains were ripened. All the seeds scattered in the paddy soil surface were not germinated after passing the winter. This study suggests that the drought-resistant GM rice was not significantly different with the parent variety of Ilmi in many agronomic characteristics such as wildness traits.

Rice grain shape is one of the key components of grain yield and market value. An understanding of the genetic basis of the variation in grain shape could be used to improve grain shape. In this study, we developed a total of 265 F2 individuals derived from a cross between japonica cultivars (Josaeng-jado and Langi) and used this population for quantitative trait locus (QLT) analysis. Correlation analysis was performed to identify relationships between grain traits (GL: grain length, GW: grain width, L/W: ratio of length to width, TGW: 1,000 grain weight). The grain shape was positively correlated with GL and TGW, and negatively correlated with GW. In QTL analysis associated with grain shape, one QTL for GL, qGL5, detected on chromosome 5, explained 20.3% of the phenotypic variation (PV), while two QTLs, qGW5 (PV=36.1) and qGW7 (PV=26.1), for GW were identified on chromosomes 5 and 7, respectively. Evaluation of the effects of each of the QTLs on the grain shape in the population showed a significant difference in the grain size in positive lines compared with the lines without the QTLs. According to the QTL combination of the allelic-types, the grain shape of the tested lines varied from semi-round type to long spindle-shaped type. The results of this study extend our knowledge about the genetic pool governing the diversity of grain shape in japonica cultivars and could be used to improve the grain shape of this species through marker-assisted selective breeding in Korea.
Removal of apical ear after silking is a method to increase seed production in corn inbreds. Due to the phenomenon of apical dominance, the subapical ear would develope and produce seeds following the removal of the apical ear. This experiment was conducted to investigate the varietal difference in subapical ear development and seed production. Days to silking of subapical ears were delayed by about 4 days compared to normal apical ears. Cob length and filled ear length of subapical ears across seven inbreds tested were reduced by 21% and 36%, respectively. Those of inbred INV302 decreased less and subapical ear of inbred NC246 were barren, which incicated the varietal defferences. Number of kernel rows, kernels per row, and total kernels per ear also decreased. The mean reduction rates for those characters were 28%, 37%, and 47%, respectively. Weights of ears and kernels were reduced and showed different response among inbred lines. Coefficients of variations for cob and filled ear lengths, number of kernel rows and kernels were greater in subapical ears than in apical ears. Seed production of subapical ears was 40 ~ 80% of apical ears, depending on inbred lines when the apical ear is removed immediately after silking.
To establish the direct seeding cultivation method in rice (Oryza sativa L.). direct subsurface seeding with different oxygen suppliers and seeding rates was conducted from May to Oct. 1989. at the experimental field of Suncheon National University. In direct subsurface seeding. calcium peroxide enhanced the ratio of seedling establishment. However. as number of plants per unit area increased. the occurrence of field lodging became progressively severe. so that the enhanced seedling establishment did not increase the yield. The optimal seeding rate and the number of sowing seeds per equally spaced spot were estimated to be 3.3Kg seeds/l0a and 3 seeds per spot with CaO$_2$-coated seeds. and 5.6Kg/10a and 5 seeds per spot with uncoated seeds. respectively, According to the results from the path coefficient analysis. percent of filled spikelets was identified to be the most influential variables on the variability in brown rice yield. so that improving percent of filled spikelets by inhibition of field lodging was the most important matter to increase the yield.
TR75, a rice (Oryza sativa L. var. Sasanishikj) mutant resistant to 5-methyltryptophan (5MT) was segregated from the progenies of its initial mutant line, TR1. The 5MT resistance of TR75 was inherited in the M$_{8}$ generations as a single dominant nuclear gene, and was also expressed in callus derived from seeds, roots, and anthers as well as in the seedlings. The callus induced from these organs could grow at 50 mg/1 of 5MT, whereas the growth of wild-type callus was completely inhibited even at 25 mg/1. The seedlings of TR75 did not show resistance to L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid, S-2-aminoethyl-L-cysteine, p-fluoro-DL-phenylalanine. The content of free amino acids in the TR75 homozygous seeds increased approximately 1.5 to 2.0 fold compared to wild-type seeds. Especially, the contents of tryptophan, phenylalanine and aspartic acid were 5.0, 5.3 and 2.7 times higher than those of wild-type seeds, respectively.y.

A new leaf variegated cultvar 'White Edge' was developed by ethyle methane sulfonate(EMS) treatment on seed of Hosta minor. Among induced leaf variegated plant, some with white color on the edge of the leaves was selected. They were cultivated via vegetative propagation. 'White Edge' was finally selected through the test of characteristics from 2003 to 2005. Assessment of botanical characteristics was conducted for three years. The major characteristic of these cultivar is that they maintain uniformly all year round. 'White Edge'(Grant No.1880) was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service(KSVS) for commercialization in 2007. These cultivar are useful as materials for pot or as ground cover plants.
Half-sib seeds and one-year-old seedlings of Ginkgo biloba were treated with various simulated acid rains (pH 2.0, pH 3.0, pH 4.0 and pH 5.0) to examine the effects of acid rain on seed germination and seedling growth. The seeds were sown in a pot ($4500cm^3$) containing one of three different soils (nursery soil, mixed soil and sandy soil) and the seedlings were grown in the same pots as the seeds. Simulated acid rain was made by diluting sulfuric and nitric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$: $HNO_3$ = 3:1, V/V) with tap water and tap water (pH6.4), and treated by 5mm each time for three minutes during the growing seasons (April to October 1985 and April to August 1986). Acid rain treatments were done three times per week to potted seeds and seedlings by spraying the solutions. The seed germination, seedling growth and physiological characteristics of potted seedlings were compared among three soil types as well as among the various pH levels. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Seed germination of Ginkgo biloba decreased significantly at pH 2.0 level in the field test, and also at the levels of both pH 2.0 and pH 3.0 in the laboratory test, compared to that at control. 2. For two-year-old seedlings, total, top and root dry weights per seedling were significantly different among the three soil types and among the levels of pH, and shoot growth was different only among the levels of pH. 3. For one-year-old seedlings, height and total and stem-branch dry weights per seedling were significantly different among the levels of pH.
Artificial acid rain(pH2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) was treated on the seeded pots of 4 species to examine its effects on germination, leaf injury and seedling growth. Aluminum ammonium sulfate solution (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5mM) and artificial acid rain (pH3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) were treated on the seeded germinators of 3 species to examine its effects on germination and radicle growth. Artificial acid rain was prepared by diluting sulfuric acid with ground water and ground water(pH6.5) was used as control. Artificial acid rain was sprayed to seeded pots three times per week. About 5mm of artificial acid rain was treated each time from early April to early October, 1991. Germination, seedling establishment, radicle growth, leaf injury and seedling growth were measured and compared among the treatments. The results were summarized as follows 1. Germination, seedling establishment rate of Pinus densiflora were highest on the pH5.0 pot whereas those of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot, and those of Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest value on the pH3.0 pot. 2. The differences in seedling height of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were significant among the treatment levels of acid rain, whereas those of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were not significant. Seedling heights of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were highest on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Magnolia sieboldii was highest on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot. 3. Seedling dry weights of Pinus densiflora. Pinus rigida, and Ailanthus altissima differed significantly among the treatments, but that of Magnolia sieboldii did not differ. Highest seedling dry weights of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were observed on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Pinus densiflora was observed on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Pinus rigida was observed on the pH5.0 pot. 4. With decrease of pH value of artificial acid rain, the number of injured needle and injured individual tended to be increased. 5. The differences in effects of soil acidity were highly significant among the treatments for all species. 6. Radicle growth of Pinus densiflora differed significantly among pH levels and aluminum concentrations.
