  • This study was conducted to investigate the avifauna of Gap stream in Daejeon metropolitan city from September in 2001 to August in 2002. For the monthly change of bird community, survey was carried at study area per each month, the obtained results could be summarized as follows. 1. The observed birds were 12 orders 31 families 83 species and 15900 individuals, 38 species are water bird as Herons, Dabbling ducks, Diving ducks, Rails, Sandpipers & Plovers and 45 species are land bird as Raptors, Woodpeckers, Wagtails, Thrushes, Warblers, Tits, Buntings, Crows. 2. These birds could be divided 29 residents, 29 summer visitors, 18 winter visitors, 7 passage migrants. 3. Among the birds, Chinese Sparrowhawk Accipiter soloensis, Eurasian Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus, Kestrel Falco tinnunculus are legally protected species as natural monuments in Korea. 4. The major dominant species were Common Teal Anas crecca, Spot-billed Duck Anas poecilorhyncha, Mallard Anas platyrhynchos, Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, Magpie Pica pica, Little Egret Egretta garzetta in order, Gap stream should be appropriate habitats for dabbling ducks and herons. 5. Among the total number of 83 species, the highest number of species was 37 species in February and the lowest number of species was 27 species in June. 6. Among the total number of 15900 individuals, the highest number of individuals was 2899 individuals in December and the lowest number of individuals was 385 individuals in May. 7. Among the monthly species diversity index, the highest number of species diversity index was 2.6207 in September and the lowest number of species diversity index was 2.0716 in January.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the community characteristics of wintering waterbirds in Geum River from September, 2011 to March, 2012 (1st) and from September, 2012 to March, 2013 (2nd). 63 species of waterbirds including raptors were observed during the survey. 50 species of 188,673 individuals recorded during the first survey, and 56 species of 116,611 individuals were recorded during the second survey. The dominant species was high dominance dabbling ducks by Baikal Teals, Mallards, Spot-billed Ducks, Greater White-fronted Geese, Black-tailed Gulls and Common Shelducks. We classified the wintering waterbirds into 9 taxa based on the similar ecological characteristics and analyzed the correlation with temperature. As a result, dabbling ducks, diving ducks and raptors showed positive correlation and herons and waders showed negative correlation. Geese, swans and dabbling ducks were high habitat utilization ratio at the Geumgang estuary barrage upstream area, and diving ducks, herons, waders and gulls were high habitat utilization ratio at the Geumgang estuary barrage downstream area.

  • We investigate predation rates of larvae and juveniles of Rana catesbeiana by using six native predatory fishes and six birds to select effective species to ecological control and management of R. catesbeiana that is invasive alien species and affects seriously wetland in Korea. Among freshwater fishes, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco, Silurus asotus and Channa argus ate larvae and juveniles of R. catesbeiana, and prefer the former, however Opsariichthys uncirostris, Monopterus albus and Anguilla japonica didn't eat at all. Six experimental water birds, Cygnus columbianus, Cygnus cygnus, Anas crecca, Aix galericulata, Anas penelope and Anas formosa nerver ate them. We were able to confirm control of R. catesbeiana probability using the native predatory fishes in Korea wetland.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird community and habitat types in Mangyeong River area from Aug. 1999 to Jun. 2000. Paddy field was the most dominant land use type. Water area, mudflat, shrub field, urban area and green house were also dominant land use types in study area. Eighty-eight bird species were recorded during study period. Maximum number of species and individuals were shown as 58 species and 7,084 individuals in Oct. and Jan., respectively. There were low number of diving ducks and clumped pattern of waterfowl distribution of bird community in Mangyeong River area. Dabbling ducks distributed at upper reaches near Samrye Bridge, and plovers and sandpipers at lower reaches near estuary. Those results suggest that creation of pools over one meter water-depth and restoration of paddy field into riparian zone with diverse shrubs are required to increase the bird diversity in the Mangyeong rived.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird community in Han River area from Oct. 1997 to Jul. 1998. Total 107 bird species were recorded in Han River area. Bird mainly distributed around Kangdong Bridge, Paldang Dam, Yangsuri, Haengju Bridge, Sungsan Bridge, and Bam island. The area between Dongiak Bridge and Youngdong Bridge showed the lowest the density of birds. The dominant birds of Han River area were the dabbling ducks, which were Anas platyrhynchos and A. poecilorhyncha. Diving ducks were distributed in the Dongiak Bridge, Youngdong Bridge, and estuary area. Grebes, Gulls, Herons, and Coots were also dominant bird species. Cormorants, Swans, Sandpipers, and Plovers were minor birds in Han River area. Maintenance and management of various micro-habitats are needed for habitation of bird community in Han River area.
